West Elm Return Policy: 30 Days, Seven-Day Upholstery and MTO Exclusions

Know when to start a return, which furniture is excluded, what counts as proof and how registry gifts, store returns and shipping costs work.

By October 15, 2026

The short answer

West Elm lets you initiate eligible returns within 30 days of receipt, or seven days for quick-ship upholstery, with valid proof. Made-to-Order, Open Box, Final Sale and other listed products are excluded. Most non-furniture items can go to a regular West Elm store for free; Outlets do not accept returns. Furniture and large items not delivered by mail need a phone arrangement.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Use a regular West Elm store for most eligible non-furniture returns; Outlets accept no returns.
  2. Bring accepted proof and follow the applicable 30-day or category-specific period.
  3. Call Customer Care for furniture or large items not delivered by mail.

Online or by mail

  1. Use the online purchased-item or gift return flow to create the UPS label.
  2. Pack in the manufacturer’s box with protective packing and review shipping/processing charges.
  3. Keep tracking and the return reference; the online reprint tool covers labels processed within the last 7 days.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is West Elm’s return policy?

You can initiate a return for eligible West Elm items within 30 days of receiving the order, or within seven days for quick-ship upholstery. Proof of purchase is required, and Made-to-Order items are excluded.

The first question for a furniture purchase is therefore what kind of item you ordered. A stocked quick-ship upholstered piece has a much shorter decision period than an ordinary eligible accessory. A custom configuration can fall outside the standard return route altogether.

Most eligible non-furniture items can go to a local West Elm store for free. Mailed purchases can use the UPS-label process, with possible return shipping and processing costs depending on the reason. Furniture and other large items not delivered by mail need a call to Customer Care. Original shipping and processing fees are nonrefundable. The table below helps you choose the route before arranging transport.

Why do quick-ship sofas and upholstery have only seven days?

West Elm's current return page gives quick-ship upholstery a seven-day period from receipt to initiate the return. Use that rule when deciding on an eligible stocked upholstered piece, rather than applying the ordinary 30 days to every sofa or chair.

The shorter period makes the first week at home important. Assess the scale, fit in the room and arrival condition promptly. If the piece is not right, get the return arrangement started while the window is available.

Starting the request and completing collection are different stages. Ask Customer Care how the timeline and pickup will work for your order rather than assuming a heavy sofa must be packed and delivered to a store without an appointment. If an older FAQ or saved summary gives a different general upholstery period, the current return page and your purchase terms are the useful starting point. Identify the item as quick-ship upholstery when asking for help.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Made-to-Order or custom furniture?

Made-to-Order items are not eligible for ordinary returns. That restriction matters when you choose a fabric or configuration made specifically for the order. A custom purchase should not be treated as having the same decision period as an eligible stock item.

Before placing it, confirm the designation on the listing and review the selected size, finish and fabric. Measurements of the room and delivery route are useful preparation, because a later preference change does not create an ordinary return option for MTO merchandise.

A defective or damaged arrival is a separate concern to raise immediately with Customer Care. West Elm asks customers to contact it right away about those problems. Describe the actual issue and let the team explain the appropriate handling for the order. The return exclusion does not tell you the precise resolution for every damage case, and this guide does not promise a universal repair, replacement or refund outcome for custom furniture.

04 / THE DETAILS

Are sale, Final Sale and Open Box items returnable?

Open Box and Final Sale items are listed as ineligible. The current return page identifies Final Sale with prices ending in .97, alongside the purchase's Final Sale designation.

The useful distinction is the actual label on your order. A promotion or discount is not enough to tell you that every sale item has the same treatment. Check the product listing and confirmation, especially when the reduction is the reason you are buying a piece you have not seen in person.

For an Open Box purchase, inspect what is being sold and understand its condition before committing. The ordinary return window does not provide a general at-home trial for those excluded items. If something arrives damaged or differs from the order, report the specific problem to Customer Care. That lets the team review the arrival issue without you relying on a return option that the Final Sale or Open Box terms exclude.

05 / THE DETAILS

Which other West Elm purchases cannot be returned?

West Elm's exclusions also include monogrammed items, mattresses and foundations, gift cards, and items damaged through normal wear and tear. Made-to-Order, Open Box and Final Sale restrictions apply as described above.

For a monogrammed purchase, review the letters and other selections carefully before ordering. For a mattress, do not infer a comfort trial from another retailer's policy: West Elm lists mattresses and foundations as ineligible for ordinary return.

A gift card is also different from merchandise bought with one. The exclusion concerns returning the card itself, rather than automatically deciding every possible return of an eligible product. If your question involves damage, a mistaken order or payment handling, give Customer Care the transaction details so it can assess that issue. The general exclusions help with ordinary return planning; the product and problem determine what the support team needs to review in an individual case.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return to West Elm without the original receipt?

You need valid proof, but West Elm accepts several alternatives to the original paper receipt. Its list includes:

  • An original paper receipt or gift receipt.
  • An electronic receipt.
  • The original packing slip with the order number visible.
  • An order number.
  • A gift-registry number.

Search those records before treating the purchase as undocumented. An email confirmation or registry record may be easier to recover than the slip from the package.

The documentation also affects the reimbursement. An original-receipt return follows the original payment method, while a gift-receipt return produces Merchandise Credit for the amount on that receipt. A purchase with no accepted proof needs Customer Care review; the policy requires proof for both refunds and Merchandise Credit. It does not offer an automatic no-receipt credit just because the product is recognizable or still appears on the website.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an online purchase to a West Elm store?

Most eligible non-furniture items can be returned to a local West Elm store for free. Bring the purchase proof and use the applicable return period. This can be a convenient way to avoid arranging a mailed parcel.

West Elm Outlets do not accept returns of any kind. A nearby Outlet is therefore not a substitute for the regular store-return route. Check the location before traveling, especially if you bought a large quantity of accessories or are visiting an unfamiliar area.

For furniture or other oversized items not delivered by mail, call Customer Care to arrange the return. The main store option is described for most non-furniture merchandise; it is not an invitation to arrive with a sofa unannounced. A clear distinction between a store-ready accessory and a collection that needs arranging can save both a difficult trip and unnecessary moving costs.

08 / THE DETAILS

How do West Elm mail returns and label reprints work?

Use West Elm's online return process for eligible items delivered by mail. It creates a UPS label for a drop-off location. Pack the items in the original manufacturer's box with enough protective material to prevent transit damage.

The form distinguishes purchases from gifts, so select the option matching your situation. The online route is for items originally shipped to the United States, including U.S. territories and APO/FPO addresses. Depending on the return reason, you may pay return shipping and processing costs.

If you need a label again, the page has a reprint tool for returns processed online within the last seven days. It asks for the return reference number and identifying information from the listed choices. That seven-day label-reprint period is a tool restriction, not the ordinary merchandise-return deadline. If your label falls outside it or the lookup fails, Customer Care can help identify the correct next step for the existing return.

09 / THE DETAILS

How do you return furniture or an oversized item?

Call 1-888-922-4119 to arrange furniture and other large-item returns when the purchase was not delivered by mail. West Elm makes this a phone-arranged process, so get the plan before booking your own transport.

Have the order number, product and delivery date available. For quick-ship upholstery, identify that category and the seven-day initiation period at the start of the conversation. For another eligible item, confirm which deadline and method apply to the actual order.

Ask about collection, preparation and the applicable cost in the same call. The general policy does not publish one universal pickup price for every item and location. If the piece arrived damaged, describe that before it is treated as a simple preference return. A useful outcome is knowing who is arranging the movement, what needs to be ready and how the return will be recorded. That is more practical than trying to fit every furniture order into the small-parcel form.

10 / THE DETAILS

Are West Elm returns free, and is original shipping refunded?

The store route is free for most eligible non-furniture items. Mail returns can involve return shipping and processing costs depending on the reason. Original shipping and processing fees are nonrefundable.

A prepaid UPS label makes shipping easier, but it does not establish that the cost is waived. Review the charge shown for your request before handing over the package. For furniture collected through Customer Care, ask for the specific arrangement and cost.

For illustration, returning a $100 eligible accessory bought with a $15 shipping charge does not automatically mean receiving $115 back. The original delivery fee stays separate, and mailing the item may create another cost. A convenient regular store may therefore be worth considering for that accessory. If the order has an arrival defect or damage, raise it accurately so Customer Care can assess that situation rather than applying an ordinary unwanted-item explanation to the request.

11 / THE DETAILS

Where does a West Elm refund go, and how long do checks take?

With an original receipt, an eligible refund uses the original payment form. With a gift receipt, it becomes Merchandise Credit for the amount shown. The distinction matters if you are a gift recipient or paid using several forms of value.

Cash and check refunds above $100 are issued as a mailed company check, which may take up to 14 business days. A larger cash purchase therefore does not guarantee a cash payout at the store counter.

There is also a high-value Merchandise Credit provision: for a return exceeding $10,000 in Merchandise Credit Cards, West Elm issues $10,000 that day and mails additional cards for the balance. These are specific processing arrangements, not a single timetable for every card refund. For a different payment method, check the actual return confirmation and ask when the credit was issued. The published check period should not be applied automatically to a bank-card refund.

12 / THE DETAILS

What is West Elm’s gift-registry return window?

Eligible registry purchases have 90 days from the event date or 90 days from purchase, whichever is later. That is useful when gifts arrive before the event or someone buys a registry item afterward.

For example, the purchase-based date may be later for a gift bought after the event. For an earlier purchase, the event-based period can be the relevant one. Keep the actual dates and registry information rather than assuming every gift has the same final day.

The word eligible still matters. The registry benefit does not remove the exclusion for monogrammed, Made-to-Order, Final Sale or other ineligible products. Use the registry number as accepted proof when needed, and ask about the applicable refund form for a recipient. If the item also has a category-specific restriction, identify it when starting the request so Customer Care can confirm the order's treatment before you arrange return shipping or furniture collection.

13 / THE DETAILS

What should you do if furniture arrives damaged or defective?

Contact West Elm Customer Care right away about damaged or defective merchandise. The current return page explicitly directs customers to raise those concerns promptly.

Describe the product and what you noticed on arrival. Photos of the affected area and packaging can help explain the issue while it is easy to show. Keep the order number and delivery information with the case. Those are useful records for the conversation, rather than a promise that every problem uses an identical evidence checklist.

For a large piece, get instructions before moving or dismantling it yourself. For an MTO or Final Sale item, explain the designation as well as the fault so the representative can assess the actual order. The ordinary exclusion tells you about routine returns; it does not specify the remedy for every damaged delivery. Ask what will happen next and how the proposed resolution will be confirmed.

14 / THE DETAILS

Can you get a West Elm price adjustment after ordering?

The current return page says prior purchases are not eligible for price adjustments, even when the item has not yet shipped. A lower price appearing later does not establish an adjustment under that policy.

This matters if you order furniture with a wait before delivery. The time between ordering and shipping is not described as an extended price-match opportunity. Review the promotion and product price before placing the purchase rather than assuming you can recalculate it whenever another sale starts.

Returning and rebuying also needs a separate assessment. An item may be ineligible, outside its window or expensive to ship back. For MTO merchandise, the return exclusion is especially important. A possible reduction in the replacement price does not erase those costs or restrictions. If the concern is an incorrect charge on the original transaction, explain that billing issue to Customer Care directly; it is a different question from requesting a later sale price.

15 / THE DETAILS

Can you use the U.S. return process for an international order?

West Elm's online and in-store return options are described for purchases shipped to the United States. Eligible items shipped to other countries need return authorization from Customer Care.

The international section says its partner, Borderfree, credits refunds in the original purchase currency, with shipping and processing fees nonrefundable. It lists 1-888-922-4119 for the United States, 1-855-860-1082 for Canada and 1-405-717-6122 for other countries. Its published [email protected] address is specifically for that international-return process.

For a U.S. purchase, start with the domestic route rather than treating that specialist email as the general support inbox. For an international purchase, obtain authorization before sending anything to a U.S. warehouse or store. The shipping destination helps determine the appropriate process; simply viewing the U.S. website does not turn every order into a domestic transaction.

16 / THE DETAILS

How can you get help with a West Elm return?

Call West Elm Customer Care at 1-888-922-4119. Use it for furniture or large-item arrangements, damage concerns, unclear eligibility or a return that the online form cannot locate.

Lead with the detail that changes the answer. “This is quick-ship upholstery delivered three days ago” identifies the short window. “I have a gift-registry number but no paper receipt” identifies an accepted alternative proof. “This label was created more than seven days ago” explains why the reprint tool may not help.

For an ordinary small mailed item, the online process is the direct starting point. For an eligible non-furniture store return, choose a regular West Elm location rather than an Outlet. Once the team confirms the method, return cost and expected refund form, keep that confirmation with the order so any follow-up relates to the arrangement already made.
