Pottery Barn Return Policy: Seven-Day Sofas, Custom Exclusions and Gift Refunds

Find the 30-day and Quick Ship deadlines, receipt rules, furniture pickup route, nonrefundable delivery costs and the longer registry window.

By October 15, 2026

The short answer

Eligible Pottery Barn items have 30 days from receipt, or seven days for Quick Ship upholstery, with an original or gift receipt. Made to Order, custom, monogrammed, Final Sale and other exclusions apply. Non-furniture returns can go to a local store; arrange furniture through Customer Care. Delivery fees are nonrefundable and mail shipping may apply.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Use a local Pottery Barn for eligible non-furniture items.
  2. Bring an original or gift receipt and check the product’s deadline and designation.
  3. Call Customer Care to arrange furniture instead of taking it to a store unannounced.

Online or by mail

  1. Choose purchased item or received gift on the official return page.
  2. Create the UPS label and pack in the original manufacturer’s box with protective material.
  3. Review return-shipping responsibility and retain the reference and drop-off receipt.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Pottery Barn’s return policy?

Eligible Pottery Barn items have 30 days from receipt, but Quick Ship upholstery has only seven days. An original receipt or gift receipt is required. Made to Order products, custom upholstery, monogrammed items and several other categories are excluded.

That makes the product designation the first thing to check on a furniture order. A ready-made accessory, a Quick Ship sofa and a sofa made in your selected upholstery can have very different options even if bought in the same transaction.

Non-furniture merchandise can go to a local Pottery Barn store. Mailed returns use its UPS-label process, while furniture returns need Customer Care. Original delivery fees are nonrefundable, and return shipping can depend on the reason.

Before moving a large piece, identify the item, the date it arrived and whether it is eligible at all. Getting those details right can save both a missed deadline and the expense of transporting something the store cannot receive.

02 / THE DETAILS

Why do Quick Ship sofas have only seven days?

The current policy gives Quick Ship upholstery seven days from receiving the order. It does not apply the ordinary 30-day period to every stocked sofa or upholstered chair.

Use the first days at home to assess the actual piece. Check scale, comfort and the way it fits the room while you can still contact Customer Care within the short period. Leaving the decision until the next monthly statement can put you beyond the stated window.

Check the product’s designation instead of guessing from how quickly the truck arrived. “Quick Ship upholstery” is the relevant category; fast delivery by itself does not establish the classification.

If you need to return it, call promptly to arrange the furniture route and confirm collection, preparation and cost. Do not assume a seven-day policy means you should independently haul a sofa to the store without speaking to anyone. The policy specifically directs furniture returns to Customer Care.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Made to Order furniture, rugs or custom upholstery?

Made to Order and custom products are excluded from ordinary returns. Pottery Barn lists Made to Order furniture and rugs, special orders and custom upholstery, and its detailed exclusions also identify custom faucets and shower sets.

The main consequence comes before purchase: a fabric, size or configuration chosen especially for your order may remove the ordinary at-home decision period. Review dimensions, finish and the selected options carefully. An expensive piece does not gain a more generous return right simply because it costs more.

Do not confuse a preference return with a delivery problem. If an item is damaged on arrival, contact Customer Care with the order and issue so it can explain the appropriate resolution. The ordinary exclusion is not enough to predict the remedy for every problem.

Ask for the actual designation on your order if uncertain. Calling a piece “custom” in everyday conversation and having it sold as Made to Order are not necessarily the same thing.

04 / THE DETAILS

Are sale and Final Sale items treated differently?

Pottery Barn’s current policy excludes Final Sale products with prices ending in .97. A lower price does not, by itself, tell you whether the product falls into that category. Check the item’s designation and the order confirmation.

A promotion can apply to otherwise eligible merchandise, while a Final Sale label removes the ordinary return option. Read both before committing to a piece you have not seen in person.

For illustration, seeing a $199.97 price should prompt you to check the Final Sale restriction rather than assume a general discount comes with the normal 30 days. The exact order terms still matter; this is an example of the published price marker, not a particular offer.

Do not rely on an older catalog’s price-ending shorthand if it conflicts with the current page. If the listing is unclear, ask Customer Care before purchasing or paying to ship a return. A later preference change does not automatically override the designation.

05 / THE DETAILS

What other Pottery Barn purchases cannot be returned?

Monogrammed items, mattresses, gift cards and products damaged through normal wear and tear are excluded. The list also includes items without an original or gift receipt and the Made to Order and Final Sale categories discussed above.

Personalisation deserves particular care when buying a gift. Confirm initials, spelling and the recipient’s preferences before placing the order. Adding a monogram is not just a design decision; it can change the return options.

For a mattress, do not assume a comfort trial offered by another retailer applies here. Pottery Barn’s general page lists mattresses as ineligible for return.

A gift card itself is also distinct from an eligible product bought using gift-card value. If that is your situation, identify which item or transaction you are asking to return. Customer Care can explain payment handling, but the exclusion does not establish a universal cash refund for either a card or merchandise purchased with it.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return to Pottery Barn without a receipt?

The current policy requires an original receipt or gift receipt. It expressly lists items without either document as ineligible. Do not plan on an automatic no-receipt store-credit option just because the product is still available online.

Search the purchaser’s records before making the trip. The original purchase documentation or a gift receipt can be much easier to recover than resolving the transaction after arriving with no evidence.

If the document is missing, ask Customer Care whether it can help identify the order and provide the appropriate receipt. That is a request for help recovering accepted proof, not a guarantee that a credit-card statement alone replaces it.

For a gift, start by asking for the gift receipt. It establishes the relevant purchase amount without needing to assume that the recipient will receive a cash refund. Pottery Barn uses Merchandise Credit for an eligible return supported by a gift receipt.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an online order to a local Pottery Barn store?

The policy offers in-store returns for eligible non-furniture items. Bring the purchase documentation and use the applicable deadline. It can be a practical route for accessories that are easy to carry and saves arranging a parcel.

Furniture returns go through Customer Care instead. A nearby store’s convenient location does not mean it is ready to receive an oversized item without an arrangement.

Keep brands distinct as well. Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Pottery Barn Teen and West Elm have separate customer-service channels. This guide explains the Pottery Barn policy; use the seller shown on your actual order rather than assuming every related brand shares one return counter.

Before setting off with several items, match each to the relevant receipt and confirm any questionable product category. Once the return is accepted, keep the confirmation so you can check the credited amount and payment handling afterward.

08 / THE DETAILS

How does the UPS mail-return process work?

Start from Pottery Barn’s official return page and choose whether you purchased the item or received it as a gift. The process creates a UPS label for a drop-off location. It applies to merchandise originally shipped to the United States, including U.S. territories and APO/FPO addresses.

Pack the item in the original manufacturer’s box with enough protective material to prevent transit damage. Keep included parts and accessories together so the returned purchase is complete and identifiable.

Depending on the return reason, you may be responsible for shipping. A prepaid label provides the shipping document; it does not automatically mean the return costs nothing.

Save the reference and carrier acceptance receipt. If tracking later shows delivery but the refund is still unresolved, those records help you identify the request and ask about processing. For furniture, stop before buying parcel postage: Customer Care is the designated route for that category.

09 / THE DETAILS

How do you return a sofa or another large furniture item?

Call Customer Care at 1-888-779-5176 to arrange the furniture return. Confirm eligibility first, especially for Quick Ship upholstery, Made to Order products and anything purchased with a Final Sale designation.

Have the order number, delivery date and product details ready. Ask who arranges collection, what preparation is required and whether a pickup or other return expense applies. The general page does not publish one universal collection price for every piece and location.

For a set, identify exactly which pieces you want to return. Do not assume that one approved item establishes approval for every component on the same order.

Keep the arrangement in writing or retain the case reference. Moving furniture can require time and help, so the useful outcome of the call is a specific plan rather than a general reassurance that “returns are possible.” A product still has to meet the applicable category and documentation requirements.

10 / THE DETAILS

Are Pottery Barn returns free, and do you recover delivery fees?

Original delivery fees are nonrefundable. Return shipping may also be your responsibility depending on the reason. The policy describes returning the merchandise value, rather than promising reimbursement of every cost associated with the purchase.

For illustration, an approved return of a $200 accessory bought with a $25 delivery charge does not automatically produce a $225 refund. If returning it by mail also costs money, that is an additional expense to consider.

For a furniture collection, get the applicable charge from Customer Care before booking independent help. For a mailed item, review the amount shown in the return process.

If the concern is arrival damage or an incorrect shipment, explain that specific problem before accepting an ordinary unwanted-item description. The general page does not set out one fixed fee or remedy for every circumstance. The representative needs the actual reason and order to confirm the handling.

11 / THE DETAILS

How are original-receipt and gift-receipt refunds different?

An eligible original-receipt return goes back to the original payment method. A gift-receipt return becomes Merchandise Credit for the amount on that receipt. Decide which documentation you have before assuming the refund will become cash.

For a recipient, Merchandise Credit can preserve the gift’s purchase value while allowing a different choice. It does not mean the credit can be withdrawn or redirected to any payment account.

The receipt amount also matters when the item’s current selling price differs from the price originally paid. The gift policy refers to the amount on the gift receipt, not an automatic payout at today’s full price.

When returning several gifts, keep the paperwork matched to the items. Ask how the credit will be issued and retain the confirmation. That gives you a clear record of the accepted purchase value without needing to infer it from the current product page.

12 / THE DETAILS

How long do refunds and mailed checks take?

Cash and check refunds over $100 are issued by mailed company check, which may take 14 business days. That specific rule should not be applied automatically to every credit-card refund.

The policy also has a high-value Merchandise Credit provision. If the return exceeds $10,000 in Merchandise Credit Cards, Pottery Barn issues $10,000 that day and mails additional cards for the remaining amount.

For an ordinary card refund, the page does not supply a single universal bank-posting period. Ask when the refund was issued and use that record if you need the payment provider to trace it.

Keep transport and processing separate. A parcel still travelling to the return facility has not reached the same stage as an accepted return with a refund already issued. The return reference, carrier receipt and retailer confirmation help you ask about the stage that is actually outstanding.

13 / THE DETAILS

What is Pottery Barn’s registry return window?

Eligible registry purchases have 90 days from the event or 90 days from purchase, whichever is later. This can accommodate gifts arriving before an event as well as purchases made afterward.

For illustration, a registry item bought after the celebration may use the purchase-based period because that creates the later date. For an earlier gift, the event-based period may be the relevant one. Keep both dates with the purchase documentation.

The registry paragraph should be read alongside the product exclusions. It does not state that personalisation, Made to Order or Final Sale restrictions disappear for every gift placed on a registry.

If the purchase also falls into a special category, identify it when contacting the registry team. Ask which deadline and return method apply to that exact item before arranging transport. Registry support uses the same published number as general Customer Service: 1-888-779-5176.

14 / THE DETAILS

Can you reprint a label or get a later price adjustment?

The online label-reprint tool covers returns processed online within the last seven days. It uses the return reference number plus an identifying detail such as postal code, full name or order number.

That seven-day tool limit is separate from the merchandise-return window. If you created the return earlier and cannot recover the label, contact Customer Care about the existing request rather than assuming the product’s eligibility has automatically changed.

A later lower selling price is a different issue. Pottery Barn’s current return page says prior purchases are not eligible for price adjustments. A sale appearing before your furniture arrives does not, by itself, establish an adjustment right.

Returning and rebuying needs its own cost assessment. Delivery may be nonrefundable, return shipping can apply, and the piece may be excluded altogether. Check those consequences before treating a lower replacement price as a guaranteed saving.

15 / THE DETAILS

What should you do about damage or an international return?

Contact Customer Care promptly and describe the actual order before arranging transport. For damage, identify the item, delivery date and affected area. Keep practical evidence such as photographs and the order information while the arrival condition is easy to explain.

International shipments use a separate route. Pottery Barn’s online return form is for items originally shipped to the United States; its current page directs orders shipped elsewhere to international Customer Service at [email protected]. That specialist address is not the general U.S. support inbox.

For a U.S. order, call 1-888-779-5176. Start with the detail that changes the answer: Quick Ship upholstery, a custom designation, a missing receipt or a delivered item that appears damaged. A clear description helps the team assess the correct route without you paying to move merchandise based on a policy summary intended for a different purchase.
