The short answer

IKEA US accepts new, unopened products within 365 days and opened products within 180 days, with proof of purchase. Returns go to an IKEA store, not a Planning Studio or Pick Up Point. For a pickup or a small-item FedEx return, contact IKEA Customer Support. Plants, cut fabric, custom countertops and as-is items are excluded.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring the item, receipt or order confirmation, and valid government photo ID to an IKEA store.
  2. Use the Exchanges & returns entrance, follow the signs to the desk, and join the line.
  3. Do not use a Planning Studio or Pick Up Point; those locations do not accept returns.

Online or by mail

  1. You can start an eligible return on IKEA’s online returns page, or take an online purchase to an IKEA store.
  2. For a delivery pickup or a small-item FedEx return, contact the Customer Support Center for the available method.

01 / THE DETAILS

How long is the IKEA return window?

For IKEA US purchases, a new and unopened item can be returned within 365 days. An opened item can be returned within 180 days. IKEA requires proof of purchase and assesses the item before approving a refund. These are different clocks, so check whether the product has been opened before relying on the one-year headline.

The return window is measured from the purchase, so keep the date on the receipt or order confirmation handy. The 365-day rule is for an item that is both new and unopened; opening it changes the relevant window to 180 days. Neither number overrides the excluded-product list. Before moving a large item, identify its purchase date, condition and category, then check the official policy for that exact situation.

02 / THE DETAILS

Do opened IKEA items get the same deadline as unopened items?

No. The ordinary opened-item period is 180 days, rather than the 365-day unopened window. Proof of purchase and IKEA’s assessment still apply. Check whether the product has been opened before relying on the one-year headline.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an opened or assembled IKEA item?

Yes, an opened or assembled item may qualify within 180 days; original packaging is not required. IKEA says it assesses whether the product remains in resellable condition. Modifying it, such as drilling or painting, or returning it dirty, stained or damaged can make it ineligible. Bring all parts so the store can assess the whole item.

IKEA's FAQ expressly says an assembled product can be returned and that the original box is unnecessary. That is useful for flat-pack furniture that no longer fits the room after assembly. Still, the store assesses the product's condition. A missing box and a missing component are different problems: the former is allowed, while an incomplete or altered product may fail the assessment. Keep hardware, shelves and other pieces together when preparing the return.

04 / THE DETAILS

Do you need a receipt or ID for an IKEA return?

IKEA normally requires proof of purchase and a valid government-issued photo ID. If an in-store receipt is missing, IKEA says it may be able to look up the transaction using the purchase date, store, exact amount and last four digits of the payment card. A purchase recorded under IKEA Family may also appear in that account. Retrieve proof or ask IKEA to locate the transaction before traveling; lookup is not a promise that every missing receipt can be recovered.

For a card purchase, the last four digits used by a digital wallet may differ from those printed on the physical card. If you are asking IKEA to find a lost receipt, check your wallet transaction as well as your bank statement. An IKEA Family account helps only when the membership number was used for that purchase. Bring any recovered proof and the required ID to the store; a card statement alone should not be assumed to replace IKEA's proof-of-purchase requirement.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can IKEA look up a missing store receipt?

IKEA may be able to locate the sale using the purchase date, store, exact amount and last four payment-card digits. An IKEA Family purchase may also appear in the account. Ask for lookup before traveling; recovery is not guaranteed.

06 / THE DETAILS

Which IKEA products cannot be returned?

IKEA excludes plants, cut fabric, custom countertops and as-is products. It also may refuse merchandise that has been modified, dirtied, stained or damaged. Returns are not accepted at IKEA Planning Studio or Pick Up Point locations; go to a full IKEA store or use the method Customer Support arranges.

The as-is exclusion matters even when the purchase is recent, and cut fabric cannot be made returnable by leaving it unused. For a piece that is stained, damaged or modified, the ordinary change-of-mind policy may not apply. A product that arrived damaged is a separate issue: report the damage through IKEA's missing-and-damaged-order help instead of assuming the standard return assessment will cover it. Check that the destination is a full store before loading the car.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return or exchange an IKEA mattress?

IKEA publishes a separate mattress rule: a mattress purchase may be exchanged for another mattress once within 90 days. Do not assume the ordinary 180- or 365-day merchandise window gives a mattress the same refund option. Check the current mattress terms before making the trip.

IKEA describes its mattress offer as one exchange for another mattress, rather than an unlimited series of swaps. Note the 90-day date and the purchase record before selecting a replacement. If you are deciding between a mattress exchange and a complaint about damage or a defect, ask IKEA which process applies. The general product deadlines at the top of this guide should not be used to infer a longer mattress exchange period.

08 / THE DETAILS

Does IKEA’s ordinary merchandise window guarantee a mattress refund?

No. Mattresses have separate terms, so the ordinary 180- or 365-day merchandise window should not be treated as a mattress refund promise. Check the mattress exchange conditions before taking it to a store.

09 / THE DETAILS

How do you start an IKEA return in a store?

Take the item, proof of purchase and photo ID to a full IKEA store. IKEA directs customers to the Exchanges & returns entrance and desk, where they join the return line. An online purchase can also be brought to a store in the same country. Planning Studios and Pick Up Points do not take returns.

An IKEA store return is also the published path for an eligible IKEA.com order. Go to the Exchanges & returns entrance, sign up for the line and keep your order details available while you wait. For an exchange, IKEA asks you to bring the card used for the purchase along with the merchandise, ID and receipt or order confirmation. Its FAQ says the item is returned first and the replacement is a new purchase, so do not count on a direct product-for-product swap.

10 / THE DETAILS

How do you start an IKEA online or pickup return?

IKEA links to an online return-start page. For an item delivered from a store or a pickup from your home, contact its Customer Support Center to arrange the available service. For a small store-purchased item, IKEA says Customer Support may set up a FedEx drop-off return. Do not mail an item on your own without the method IKEA provides.

Starting online and returning by mail are not identical. The online tool begins the request; the actual route depends on the item and how it was delivered. IKEA says a pickup may be arranged through Customer Support where service is available, and small store-bought items may be sent through a support-arranged FedEx drop-off. Ask for the instructions before packing or shipping. For a bulky item, also check whether pickup service operates in your area and where IKEA asks you to place it.

11 / THE DETAILS

How does IKEA refund an approved return?

IKEA says an approved return is refunded to the same form of payment originally used, based on the net purchase price shown on the receipt. If a promotion included an extra item that you keep, the value of that item can be deducted. IKEA does not give one universal bank-posting time on this policy page.

The net price shown on the receipt can be lower than the shelf price after a discount or promotion. If a free promotional item was part of the transaction and you keep it, IKEA says its value can be subtracted from the refund. Match the proposed amount to the original receipt before leaving the desk. A receipt-backed return generally goes back to the original payment method; IKEA's receipt-help page also discusses a refund card option. Posting time then depends on the payment provider.

12 / THE DETAILS

What if an IKEA order arrives damaged or incomplete?

For a damaged part, IKEA says it may be able to ship a replacement. It recommends visiting a store with the affected item or part and your order confirmation or receipt; if that is not possible, contact the US Customer Support Center. A damage or missing-item claim has its own process, so report the problem promptly rather than treating it as an ordinary change-of-mind return.

If only one component is damaged, IKEA says a replacement part may be possible. Bring the affected piece and order confirmation or receipt to a store for the quickest route it describes. For a missing delivery, incomplete box or problem you cannot take to the store, contact its Customer Support Center and explain the order number, item and issue. This helps support distinguish a replacement-part request from a full return or collection request.

13 / THE DETAILS

How do you contact IKEA about a return?

IKEA lists its US Customer Support Center at 1-888-888-4532 on its policy page. Use that number for help with a damaged item, a pickup or a small-item FedEx return. IKEA also offers a customer-support page for online help; no direct US return-support email address was verified on the cited pages.

Have the purchase date, store or online order number, receipt, item name and a short description of the issue ready when you call. Tell IKEA whether you need a return pickup, a FedEx method, a receipt lookup or help with damage; each has a different next step. If you cannot travel to a store, IKEA also points customers to its chat option on the return-instructions page. Use the official support channels linked here rather than a third-party return address.

14 / THE DETAILS

Can you exchange an IKEA purchase instead of taking a refund?

IKEA's return FAQ says an exchange is handled by returning the original item first and then making a new purchase. For an in-store exchange, its instructions list the merchandise, photo ID, receipt or online order confirmation, and the card used for the purchase. This matters if the replacement has a different price or the original product was bought during a promotion: ask the store what the new transaction will cost before committing. A mattress is a special case with one exchange within 90 days; do not apply that rule to ordinary furniture. Planning Studios and Pick Up Points are not exchange counters, so use a full IKEA store.

15 / THE DETAILS

Can you return to IKEA without a receipt?

IKEA says it can look up some in-store receipts using the date, store, exact transaction amount and last four digits of the payment card. A purchase attached to an IKEA Family membership may also be visible in that account. This is a way to recover proof, not a separate no-receipt return policy. Check an emailed order confirmation for online purchases, and verify the correct last four digits if you paid with a digital wallet. When the transaction cannot be located, ask IKEA support what proof is acceptable before taking the product to a store.
