Crate & Barrel Return Policy: 30 Days, Custom Furniture and Registry Gifts

Check the current 30-day rule, proof alternatives, furniture arrangements, registry exceptions and return-shipping costs before sending anything back.

By October 15, 2026

The short answer

Crate & Barrel generally accepts eligible new, unused and resalable items within 30 days of receipt with valid proof of purchase. Custom or Made to Order furniture and other excluded products cannot use ordinary returns. Qualifying non-furniture registry purchases have 90 days from the event. Customers pay return shipping and pickup fees; original shipping is nonrefundable.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring eligible merchandise and accepted purchase proof to the matching brand’s store.
  2. Use the applicable 30-day or qualifying registry period.
  3. For furniture and rugs, contact the store of purchase to arrange the return first.

Online or by mail

  1. Start the online return with the order number and shipping ZIP code.
  2. Select eligible items, print the UPS label and pack the merchandise; return shipping is customer-paid.
  3. Retain tracking; the stated mail refund period is 7–10 business days after receipt.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Crate & Barrel’s current return policy?

Crate & Barrel generally accepts eligible returns and exchanges within 30 days of receipt, with valid proof of purchase. Merchandise needs to be new, unused and resalable, and acceptance remains subject to the retailer's review.

The important distinction is between an ordinary stock purchase and something made specifically for you. Custom or Made to Order furniture and personalized goods are excluded from ordinary returns. Other exclusions include Final Sale items, floor samples and certain product categories listed below.

For a small eligible household item, a matching-brand store can be convenient. Furniture and rugs need arrangements with the store before you bring them in. Mailing a purchase is another option for qualifying shipped orders, but you pay return shipping and any pickup fee, and the original delivery charge is nonrefundable. The return method can therefore make a meaningful difference to what you recover.

Is the return window 30 days or 90 days?

Use 30 days from receipt for an ordinary eligible purchase. Crate & Barrel's current return page gives that period. Older catalogues and summaries describing a general 90-day window should not guide a new return.

There is a separate benefit for qualifying gift-registry purchases: eligible non-furniture items can be returned through 90 days from the event date. That is a registry rule with exclusions, rather than a longer deadline for everything sold by the store.

For example, a set of ordinary dinner plates and a qualifying registry gift may have different dates even when they are the same product. Start with how the item was bought and the receipt or registry record. For a regular online purchase, the receipt of the merchandise is the relevant starting point. Waiting to unpack a delivery or postponing an event does not, by itself, establish a different ordinary return period.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return something without a paper receipt?

You need proof of purchase, but it does not have to be a paper receipt. Crate & Barrel accepts a printed store or gift receipt, eReceipt, electronic order confirmation, packing slip, order number or gift-registry number.

That gives you several useful places to look before calling a purchase undocumented. Search the email address used for the order, check the packing slip or ask a gift giver for the order information. The record also helps establish the actual paid price and the correct purchase brand.

A registry-number-only return has a specific result: the current selling price is refunded as Merchandise Credit. With a gift receipt or gift packing slip, the purchase price goes to Merchandise Credit. If you cannot provide any accepted proof, the policy says the item cannot be returned or exchanged. A bank statement or a current listing is not a published substitute for those accepted records.

04 / THE DETAILS

Can you return a sofa, dining table or other furniture?

Eligible stock furniture can fall under the 30-day policy, but Custom and Made to Order furniture is excluded from ordinary returns. Identify which kind you bought before arranging transport.

If you want to return furniture to a store, contact the store of purchase first. The same instruction applies to rugs. A sofa or large table needs coordination in a way a boxed kitchen item usually does not, and the policy makes the customer responsible for applicable return shipping and pickup fees.

The useful first conversation is about your exact order: whether the furniture qualifies, where it can go and how collection or delivery should be arranged. For a custom piece that arrived defective or transit-damaged, use the separate repair or replacement process described below. That situation has a different resolution from returning an eligible stock chair because it does not suit the room.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can assembled furniture be returned, or must it be taken apart?

Assembly alone is not an automatic exclusion. Crate & Barrel's General FAQs say merchandise assembled in your home can be returned and that you do not need to disassemble it.

Those answers sit alongside the main return policy. The furniture must still be eligible, within the applicable period and in new, unused/resalable condition. A custom piece does not become ordinarily returnable because it was assembled at home, and damage from use remains a separate concern.

This is a good reason to arrange the return before undoing a complicated assembly job. Give the store the order number, product and current condition, then agree on the collection or store-return method. Dismantling a large item unnecessarily can add work and create new damage. If the problem is an assembly fault or something noticed on arrival, describe that directly so the representative can assess the actual issue rather than only the change-of-mind policy.

06 / THE DETAILS

How are custom and personalized purchases handled?

Custom or Made to Order furniture and personalized goods cannot use the ordinary return or exchange route. Crate & Barrel explains that these orders are made to your individual specifications. The listed restrictions also address modification and cancellation.

Take the specification seriously before ordering: fabric, frame, finish, dimensions and any personalization affect what is being made. A custom sofa in the wrong color for your room is a different situation from a stock accessory you can bring back within the normal window.

There is a separate process if a custom or personalized item arrives with a manufacturing defect or transit damage. Crate & Barrel says it will repair or replace the defective item or damaged area; if that is not possible, it will arrange an exchange. It reserves the decision on the best course of action. The published remedy should not be turned into an automatic cash-refund promise.

07 / THE DETAILS

Which items are excluded from ordinary returns?

The main exclusions include personalized items, Custom or Made to Order furniture, NFL items, Final Sale merchandise, store floor samples, live botanicals and cut fabric yardage. Items used or damaged through normal wear and tear are excluded too.

Wallpaper has a specific condition: returns are accepted only on unused, unopened rolls. Buying several rolls for a project therefore calls for a decision before opening every one. Likewise, a floor sample's discounted price does not create a standard trial period at home.

Check the designation on the particular order. “Sale” and “Final Sale” are not interchangeable descriptions, and the policy specifically names Final Sale. For a restricted item with an arrival defect or shipping problem, describe that issue to Customer Service rather than assuming an ordinary return is available. The restrictions explain preference returns; the retailer still needs to review a product problem under the relevant purchase terms.

08 / THE DETAILS

Can Crate & Kids, CB2 or Outlet purchases go to any store?

Use the brand where the purchase originated. Crate & Barrel and Crate & Barrel Kids purchases use the Crate & Barrel website or stores. CB2 purchases use CB2, while Hudson|Grace purchases use Hudson|Grace.

The store instructions also distinguish Outlet purchases: Crate & Barrel Outlet items go to a Crate & Barrel Outlet. The fact that these brands share corporate connections does not make every register a common return counter.

For example, taking a CB2 accessory into a convenient Crate & Barrel store is not the route described in the policy. Check the name on the order and use that brand's process. For furniture or rugs, arrange the return with the store of purchase first. Items bought outside the United States have purchase-country restrictions too, so this U.S. guide should not be used to assume an overseas transaction can be handed to any U.S. location.

09 / THE DETAILS

How do you return an eligible item to a store?

Take eligible non-furniture merchandise and proof of purchase to the correct brand's store within the applicable period. For an ordinary purchase, the published period is 30 days from receipt.

An order number, eReceipt or packing slip can be useful if the paper receipt is missing. With a gift, bring its gift receipt or gift packing slip so the associate can use the correct Merchandise Credit process. The documentation affects the refund outcome as well as identifying the purchase.

Furniture and rugs need a call to the store of purchase before arrival. That prevents you from organizing a large trip without knowing how the item will be received. At the counter, review the amount and refund form, especially if the purchase involved a gift card, Merchandise Credit or cash. A store return can save the work of packing a parcel, but it still needs the right product, brand and purchase record.

10 / THE DETAILS

How do Crate & Barrel mail returns work?

For an eligible shipped order, start the online return using the order number and shipping ZIP code. Select the products and reason, print the UPS label, pack the items and drop the parcel at a UPS store.

You pay the return shipping. The availability of a printable label does not make the shipment free. Crate & Barrel also makes customers responsible for applicable pickup fees, which matters more for a large or heavy order.

If you prefer the alternative process, use the instructions and return address on the packing slip and insure the parcel. A missing slip is a reason to contact Customer Service for the correct instructions, rather than using an address copied from another purchase. Track the return through delivery. The published refund period starts after Crate & Barrel receives an eligible return, so the carrier journey and refund processing are separate parts of the wait.

11 / THE DETAILS

Are return shipping and original delivery charges refunded?

Original shipping charges are nonrefundable, and the customer pays return shipping and any pickup fees. This is one of the most important costs to consider before returning a large purchase simply because it does not fit the room.

As an illustration, a $200 merchandise purchase with a $20 original shipping charge does not automatically produce $220 back. The delivery charge remains separate, and mailing the item can create another expense. Ask for the actual return or pickup quote before committing to the method.

A nearby matching-brand store may be convenient for an eligible non-furniture item. For furniture or rugs, the store needs to arrange the return first. If your concern is a defect or transit damage, describe it when contacting support so the order problem can be assessed. The ordinary shipping rule is useful for estimating a routine return, but it should not replace that conversation about what went wrong.

12 / THE DETAILS

What is the gift-registry return policy?

Eligible gift-registry purchases can be returned through 90 days from the event date, excluding furniture. The normal product exclusions still apply, including personalized, Final Sale and other restricted merchandise.

The benefit can be useful when gifts arrive over a period of time and you need to decide what to keep after the event. The registry record connects the present to the purchase, so have the registry number available if the gift receipt is missing.

How you document the purchase affects the credit. With a gift receipt or gift packing slip, Crate & Barrel uses Merchandise Credit for the purchase price. With only the registry number and no other purchase proof, it uses the item's current selling price as Merchandise Credit. A price reduction can therefore matter. The registry extension should not be applied to a sofa simply because it appeared on a registry; furniture is expressly excluded from that longer period.

13 / THE DETAILS

How are gift cards, gifts and cash purchases refunded?

With standard proof of purchase, an eligible refund generally follows the original form of payment. The portion paid using a Gift Card or Merchandise Credit is returned through a new card or credit of the corresponding type.

A gift receipt or gift packing slip produces Merchandise Credit for the purchase price. That gives the recipient shopping value without establishing a cash payment. A registry-number-only return uses the current selling price as credit instead.

There is another practical detail for cash: in-store refunds of cash sales greater than $100 are issued by check through the mail. Returning a qualifying $150 cash purchase therefore does not mean leaving with $150 in banknotes. The associate can explain how the check will be issued. Keep the return record and confirm the relevant details before leaving, especially when the refund is divided between payment types or sent later.

14 / THE DETAILS

How long does a Crate & Barrel refund take?

For eligible mail returns, Crate & Barrel says the refund will post to the original payment method within seven to ten business days after receipt. The parcel's transit to the return facility comes before that period.

Use tracking to establish when it arrived, then compare that date with the refund confirmation. Business days are different from calendar days, so weekends can make the wait look longer than the number printed in the policy.

If the refund is missing, ask whether the return has been received and processed, and which reimbursement method was used. A gift-return Merchandise Credit is not the same thing as a credit on the purchaser's card. For a check refund, the postal step matters too. Knowing the expected form avoids looking in the wrong place, and the return confirmation gives Customer Service a transaction it can trace without rebuilding the entire order history.

15 / THE DETAILS

What should you do about a damaged or faulty delivery?

Contact Crate & Barrel with the order and a clear description of the arrival problem. Preserve useful packaging and take photos while the fault or transit damage is easy to show. These are practical ways to explain the situation, not an additional universal documentation rule.

For a custom or personalized purchase, the policy describes repair, replacement of the item or affected area, and an exchange if repair or replacement is not possible. Crate & Barrel decides the appropriate course for that case.

For furniture and rugs, arrange the handling rather than transporting the piece without a plan. A useful message identifies the product, delivery date and problem: for example, a damaged table edge noticed during unpacking. That gives support a more specific issue to assess than simply saying you want to return furniture. Keep the case information with the order until the agreed remedy is finished.

16 / THE DETAILS

How can you contact Crate & Barrel about a return?

Call Customer Service at 800-967-6696. The current customer-service page lists phone hours of Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–7 p.m. Central, and Saturday–Sunday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Central.

You can also text 312-779-1979 during the listed service hours or use the contact form and chat options. The contact form is an online form, rather than a published general customer-service email address.

Choose a specific question for the conversation. For a stock-furniture return, ask about eligibility and collection costs. For an assembled item, confirm the agreed handling before taking anything apart. For a registry gift, explain which purchase proof you have. The order number or registry information lets the team connect those questions to the correct transaction. Once you have the method, price and expected refund form, you can decide how to proceed without guessing from an old 90-day summary.
