Most Walmart purchases can be returned within 90 days after purchase or receipt. Important exceptions include 14 days for most wireless phones, 30 days for Walmart-sold consumer electronics, 14 days for Marketplace consumer electronics, and only 2 days after accepted delivery for a full refund on major appliances. Receipt status, seller, item condition, and return method can also change the result.
What is Walmart’s standard return policy?
Walmart’s standard window is 90 days after purchase or upon receipt for most eligible merchandise sold through Walmart U.S. stores, Walmart.com, and Walmart Business. A receipt or order number normally sends the refund back to the original payment method.
That 90-day rule is a starting point, not a promise for every product. The seller and category matter. Major appliances, wireless phones, consumer electronics, Marketplace merchandise, luxury goods, and several services have shorter deadlines or different procedures. Check Purchase History or the item’s return details before relying on the headline window.
Walmart’s official corporate return policy
| Product or purchase type | Published window |
|---|---|
| Most Walmart-sold merchandise | 90 days after purchase or receipt |
| Major appliances | 2 days after accepted delivery for a full refund; qualifying factory-sealed units up to 30 days |
| Most wireless phones | 14 days |
| Walmart-sold consumer electronics and PCs | 30 days |
| Most Marketplace merchandise | 30 days |
| Marketplace consumer electronics | 14 days |
| Contact lenses, hearing aids, and prescription eyewear | 60 days |
| Perennials, shrubs, and trees | 365 days, in-store only |
When does Walmart’s return window begin?
Walmart’s corporate policy uses the wording “after purchase or upon receipt.” For an ordinary store purchase, use the purchase date. For a shipped order, use the date the item was received. Major appliances have a more exact rule: the two-day full-refund clock begins when delivery is accepted.
Walmart does not publish one universal rule explaining whether every return must merely be started, handed to a carrier, or received by the deadline. Purchase History displays the latest eligible return or replacement date for an order, so use that date rather than counting informally. Start close-to-deadline returns early and retain the store receipt, drop-off receipt, or carrier scan.
Can you return something to Walmart without a receipt?
Possibly, but approval is not automatic. Walmart can try to locate a store purchase using the debit or credit card used at checkout. It can look up an online order using a phone number or email, and Walmart also provides an online store-receipt lookup tool.
If the transaction cannot be found, bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Walmart stores the ID information in a secure database and uses a refund-verification process to decide whether to accept the return. If approved, a non-receipted return is refunded to a Walmart Gift Card. Walmart says it limits the number and frequency of these returns.
A customer may also be offered an exchange or, where available, manufacturer repair. Do not assume that missing the receipt automatically converts an otherwise ineligible return into store credit. The applicable item deadline and restrictions still matter.

What is Walmart’s electronics and TV return policy?
Consumer electronics sold by Walmart generally have a 30-day return window. That category includes televisions and many common electronic products. PCs and PC components—including motherboards, RAM, and graphics cards—also have 30 days and must be returned in their original packaging. After that deadline, Walmart directs PC owners to the manufacturer for warranty assistance.
Electronics sold by a Walmart Marketplace seller use a different rule. Walmart’s Marketplace help page gives listed consumer electronics—including computers, consoles, printers, cameras, GPS units, tablets, e-readers, drones, and phones—a 14-day window. Confirm the seller shown on the product listing or order before calculating the deadline.
Consumer-electronics bundles must be returned together. Before returning a phone, tablet, laptop, or other connected device, erase personal data and gather its charger, battery, accessories, and packaging.

How long do you have to return a phone to Walmart?
Most wireless phones have a 14-day deadline. Verizon postpaid phones are listed separately with a 30-day window. An opened unlocked phone can be exchanged within 14 days for an exact or similar item, while a new, unopened eligible phone can qualify for a refund.
Marketplace phones fall under the Marketplace consumer-electronics rule, which is also 14 days. Carrier service, activation, financing, and cancellation obligations may be separate from Walmart’s merchandise return. Returning the device does not necessarily cancel every carrier agreement or charge.
Erase personal information using the manufacturer’s instructions before handing over the phone. Walmart does not publish a universal Find My or activation-lock rule on the policy page, so confirm the device-specific preparation steps before returning it.

How do you return a major appliance to Walmart?
Major appliances have Walmart’s shortest prominent deadline: two days after accepted delivery for a full refund. Inspect a refrigerator, freezer, range, dishwasher, washer, dryer, or other major appliance before accepting it. If you see damage, notify the driver and ask about refusing delivery.
Major appliances cannot be returned to a Walmart store. Start the return in the Walmart app or through Walmart’s online return flow so carrier pickup can be arranged. Damage or defects reported within the two-day period can be returned free of charge. After day two, opened or installed appliances are generally directed to the manufacturer’s warranty.
An unopened, uninstalled, undamaged appliance in its original factory-sealed packaging can be returnable for up to 30 days after delivery. Walmart specifically says Marketplace appliances may face a restocking fee of up to 20%. Because Walmart’s longer appliance guide also refers to seller discretion, check the seller and the return details displayed for the exact appliance before assuming whether a fee applies. Custom or made-to-order appliances are not returnable.
Are Walmart Marketplace returns different?
Yes. Most products sold and shipped by Walmart Marketplace sellers have a 30-day window, but Walmart establishes shorter minimum standards for important categories: major appliances have two days, listed consumer electronics have 14 days, and qualifying luxury merchandise has 14 days. Some Marketplace collectibles are final sale.
Open the order and confirm who sold and shipped it. The seller’s return information can add item-specific conditions, and some sellers may charge a restocking fee of up to 20%. Marketplace luxury and collectible returns require especially careful packaging: include the original boxes, papers, warranty cards, grading documents, certificates, and appraisals. New apparel, shoes, and accessories must remain unworn and unaltered with their original tags.
Some Marketplace items cannot be taken to a Walmart store, including certain oversized, freight, luxury, collectible, or hazardous-material products. Follow the method generated in the online return flow instead of choosing a carrier independently.
Can you return a Walmart.com order to a store?
Many eligible Walmart.com purchases can be returned to a Walmart store or curbside. You can start through the Walmart app, Walmart.com, Purchase History, or Walmart’s returns page; an account is not required for the dedicated return flow. Walmart also offers free mail returns and FedEx pickup for eligible items. Walmart+ members have additional home-pickup options, although the corporate policy does not publish every eligibility detail in the summary.
Return-method restrictions matter. Major appliances, freight, oversized, and heavy items cannot go back to stores. Perishable online orders, fuel-containing products, and photo or personalized merchandise cannot use ordinary mail returns. Assembled furniture and grills must be fully disassembled and repackaged before a store or FedEx drop-off, and FedEx may refuse unpackaged assembled products.
Use only the option displayed for the item. Keep the store receipt or carrier scan until both the return and refund are complete.
Can you return opened or used merchandise to Walmart?
There is no single opened-item rule for every Walmart product. Some eligible merchandise can be returned after opening, while specified categories become exchange-only or final sale. Condition, missing components, hygiene concerns, and category restrictions can all change the outcome.
Opened unlocked wireless phones are exchange-only within 14 days. Opened or used drones and projectors are exchange-only within 30 days. Opened air beds, air mattresses, power generators, and durable medical equipment can be exchanged for an exact or similar item within 90 days. Walmart says new, unopened versions of these exchange-only products may receive a full refund when otherwise eligible.
Return every part of a bundle together. Rechargeable-battery products must include their original battery. Toilets and urinals must be unused, uninstalled, and in their original packaging unless the return concerns a new damaged or defective unit.
Which Walmart products are final sale or non-returnable?
Walmart’s final-sale list is unusually broad. It includes firearms, ammunition, alcohol, tobacco, prescription medications and devices, pseudoephedrine products, diabetic supplies, home diagnostic and pregnancy tests, hygienic medical equipment, pepper and bear spray, precious metals, trading cards, used or mounted tires and wheels, and several weapon or archery categories. Local law can create additional restrictions.
Gift cards, prepaid phone and gaming cards, SIM cards, video-game download cards, video on demand, and most software downloads are also non-returnable. Walmart Business special quantity orders are final after delivery except for qualifying major damage or missing items reported under the order terms. Some Marketplace collectibles are final sale, so check the product listing before purchasing.
A product that is refundable but not physically returnable is a different situation. Walmart’s Fresh Guarantee and certain recalls can use that approach. Start through the official return flow rather than mailing a restricted product.
How long does a Walmart refund take?
Refund timing depends on the original payment method and whether the return was handled through a store or Walmart.com. Walmart’s corporate table allows up to 10 business days for a credit-card refund and up to seven for PIN-debit. Its Walmart.com refund page says credit and debit refunds can take up to seven business days. When timing matters, use the longer published estimate before treating the refund as missing.
There is also an important fallback. Walmart’s policy says that if it cannot refund the original debit or credit card, a store purchase can become a Walmart Gift Card or Walmart Balance. For an online purchase, the fallback is Walmart Balance. That means a closed or replaced card can result in Walmart-controlled store credit rather than money sent to a different bank account.
Outbound Walmart.com shipping charges are not always refunded. Purchases made with manufacturer coupons do not receive the coupon value back, and the coupon itself is not returned.
Walmart’s corporate refund rules · Walmart.com refund timelines
| Payment method | Published refund timing |
|---|---|
| Cash or check on a receipted store return | Immediate cash |
| Credit card under the corporate policy table | Up to 10 business days |
| PIN debit under the corporate policy table | Up to 7 business days |
| Credit or debit on Walmart.com refund help | Up to 7 business days |
| Walmart Gift Card, Walmart Balance, or eligible EBT refund | Up to 3 hours |
| Prepaid card or PayPal | Up to 30 business days |
| Third-party gift card | Up to 10 business days; potentially longer for an international bank |
How do Walmart gift, EBT, and promotional returns work?
With a gift receipt, Walmart allows an exchange, a Walmart Gift Card, or a credit back to the gift giver’s original payment method. Without a gift receipt, the published choices are an exchange or Walmart Gift Card, subject to Walmart’s non-receipted-return approval process.
WIC and SNAP purchases have payment-specific restrictions. WIC merchandise is generally exchanged for the same item rather than refunded. SNAP merchandise is refunded to the SNAP EBT card or exchanged; it is not refunded as cash, ordinary card credit, or a gift card. Without a receipt, eligible WIC or SNAP merchandise is exchanged for the same item.
Promotions can also reduce the cash value of a return. Manufacturer coupon value is excluded from the refund, and Walmart reserves the right to decline certain coupon-purchased returns. Keep the receipt so you can see how the original transaction allocated discounts.
Can you return food or groceries to Walmart?
Walmart’s Fresh Guarantee covers produce, fresh flowers, meat, bakery, deli, dairy, and frozen products when the customer has a receipt. Some eligible grocery problems may receive a refund without the product being physically returned. Perishable online orders cannot be mailed back; start the request in the Walmart app or online.
Walmart does not publish a separate universal Fresh Guarantee deadline on the corporate policy page. Do not rely on an unofficial food-return window. Use the return eligibility shown for the purchase and report a quality, damage, substitution, or delivery problem promptly.
Alcohol is final sale under Walmart’s national policy, subject to applicable law. Prescription drugs, prescription devices, and several regulated health products are also final sale, so grocery and pharmacy purchases should not be treated as one broad category.
What is Walmart’s holiday return policy?
Walmart’s published holiday extension says most eligible items purchased from October 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31. The policy specifically warns that exceptions may apply, including wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and selected seasonal and luxury merchandise. Marketplace seller participation can also vary.
Do not automatically replace a shorter category deadline with January 31. Check the return date attached to the individual order, especially for phones, Marketplace electronics, appliances, luxury products, and anything marked final sale. Walmart’s exception list is introduced as examples rather than a complete list.
What if a Walmart purchase arrives damaged or defective?
For a damaged or defective Walmart.com item, begin through Purchase History or the official return flow. Eligible products may qualify for a refund or replacement and may be returned by mail or to a store. Photograph the damage, packaging, shipping label, and serial number before discarding anything.
Major appliances are the urgent exception: inspect at delivery and report damage within two days after accepting it. After that period, opened or installed appliance problems generally move to the manufacturer’s warranty. PC problems after the 30-day return period also move to warranty assistance. A warranty claim is not an extension of the return deadline.
Recall handling varies. Walmart says some recalled products can receive a return, refund, or store credit, while others must be handled by the manufacturer. Follow the specific recall notice rather than the ordinary return procedure.
