Dillard’s Return Policy: 30 Days, Clearance Exclusions and the $9.95 Mail Label

Check POP labels, original packaging, gift credit and product-specific restocking fees before heading to a store or mailing a return.

By October 18, 2026

The short answer

Dillard’s generally gives eligible merchandise 30 calendar days from purchase. Ordinary returns need unused condition, original packaging, attached tags and the required purchase proof. Eligible store returns are free, excluding Clearance Centers; the Dillard’s mail label costs $9.95. Clearance reduced 65% or more, additional-discount sale merchandise and personalized items are excluded, with stated exceptions for damage, defects or shipping errors.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring eligible items to a Dillard’s location other than a Clearance Center.
  2. Keep original packaging, attached tags, POP information and purchase proof.
  3. Ask an associate or Customer Service to confirm refund tender and any disclosed product fee.

Online or by mail

  1. Find the online or store purchase through Dillard’s order lookup and choose Start Return.
  2. Select the items, pack with purchase proof and apply the $9.95 supplied label or your own postage.
  3. Use USPS for the Dillard’s label and keep traceable handover records.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is the Dillard’s return policy?

Dillard’s generally gives you 30 calendar days from purchase to return eligible merchandise. Items need to meet the condition and purchase-proof requirements. Eligible in-store returns are free at Dillard’s locations other than Clearance Centers; using the retailer’s mail-return label costs $9.95.

The two biggest catches are clearance eligibility and proof-of-purchase labels, often called POP labels. Some clearance is final, and a store-bought item needs its original POP label as well as its attached merchandise tags. Keep those in place until you know you are keeping the purchase.

For eligible refunds, Dillard’s offers the original tender or merchandise credit at the customer’s choice, subject to payment-specific rules. A free trip to the return counter does not necessarily eliminate every deduction: certain online products have separately disclosed restocking fees that can apply to store returns too. Check the order rather than treating the 30-day deadline as the only requirement.

02 / THE DETAILS

Does the 30-day window begin at purchase or delivery?

Dillard’s states 30 calendar days from the purchase date, including for eligible purchases on dillards.com. That is a shorter practical window than 30 days after a parcel arrives. Weekends count because the policy uses calendar days.

Check the date on your receipt or confirmation and compare it with the date you received the merchandise. Delivery time does not automatically move the starting point forward. If an order arrived unusually late, contact Customer Service with that history before relying on extra time.

For store purchases, Dillard’s allows a longer period when one is specifically shown on the face of the receipt or a notice at the point of sale. Keep that documentation if it applies. The general policy does not promise a standard grace period after day 30, and opening a return request is not a published guarantee of unlimited extra mailing time. Arrange the handover promptly.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return sale and clearance items?

Some sale merchandise can be eligible, but Dillard’s excludes clearance marked down 65% or more. It also excludes sale merchandise sold with an additional discount, such as an already marked-down item receiving an extra limited-time percentage reduction.

Do not judge eligibility only by how much you paid. A sale rack can contain merchandise with different restrictions, and an additional-discount event can change the result. Keep the receipt and check the item’s selling terms before removing tags or committing to a fit.

For illustration, an ordinary price reduction and a clearance purchase with an extra event discount are not necessarily treated the same way. If the receipt or sale signage is unclear, ask Dillard’s to identify the rule applying to that transaction. The policy separately says these restrictions do not apply to merchandise that is damaged, defective or shipped in error. Explain that kind of problem directly rather than describing it as an ordinary unwanted clearance purchase.

04 / THE DETAILS

Can you return worn clothes or shoes without the box?

Ordinary returns require original, unused condition, unless there is a manufacturer’s defect. All merchandise tags must remain attached, and items need their original packaging. Electronic items, children’s gear and shoes specifically need the manufacturer’s original packing material.

That means the 30-day period is for deciding about an eligible purchase while preserving its return condition. It is not an event-wear trial. If you are considering returning shoes, keep the box and check the fit without putting outdoor wear on the soles.

Protect the manufacturer’s packaging during a mailed return. Put a shoe box inside a shipping carton rather than covering the product box in postage labels and tape. If packaging was missing or damaged when the order arrived, tell Customer Service what happened before sending it back. Do not assume that a receipt automatically cancels the original-packaging requirement, or conceal actual use when asking for help.

05 / THE DETAILS

What is a Dillard’s POP label, and why does it matter?

A proof-of-purchase label, or POP label, helps Dillard’s identify the item and its sale. For store purchases, the policy describes a physically attached yellow label and requires the original POP label on a returnable item.

For online purchases, POP information appears in the order-status email sent when the item ships, or in pickup-related emails for a collected order. You can also find it in Order Detail through Order History on the website or Dillard’s app.

Keep the POP information together with the receipt. An order containing several items may need the relevant item information rather than simply showing the total card charge. If you are preparing a return in a store, open the correct order-detail screen before joining the line. If you are mailing it, include the receipt with proof of purchase as instructed. This makes it easier for the return to be matched to the transaction you expect to be refunded.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return something without a receipt?

Dillard’s asks for a receipt or proof of purchase, and its store-purchase requirements include the original POP label. Its public policy does not promise a universal no-receipt refund based only on the item being sold by Dillard’s.

For an online purchase, look in the account’s Order History and search your email for the shipping or pickup message. The POP details may still be available even when you cannot find a paper receipt. The policy also links tools to look up online or in-store purchases.

If the purchase record cannot be located, contact Customer Service before making a trip or paying postage. Ask what evidence can be used for that particular transaction. A bank statement may help establish a date and seller, but it is not automatically a replacement for the item-level information and attached labels. If it was a gift, say so; the gift-return process has a different refund outcome.

07 / THE DETAILS

How do you return an online order to a Dillard’s store?

Bring the eligible merchandise and receipt or purchase proof to a Dillard’s store, excluding Clearance Centers. Ask an associate for assistance or go to Customer Service. Eligible in-store returns do not carry the standard mail-label charge.

Bring the complete item in its original packaging, with attached tags and the order’s POP information. Check the location on the official store locator before travelling. A Clearance Center is not an alternative return counter just because it is nearby and carries the Dillard’s name.

If the order included a product with a disclosed restocking fee, taking it to a store does not automatically remove that charge. Dillard’s says that fee applies whether the product is returned by mail or at a store. Ask the associate to explain the final refund and any deduction before completing the transaction, especially when the item was bought with Afterpay or another payment method needing specific handling.

08 / THE DETAILS

How do Dillard’s mail returns work?

Find the purchase through Order History or the online or in-store purchase lookup, choose Start Return, and select the merchandise you are sending back. Dillard’s provides a printable return label for $9.95.

Repack the eligible items and include the receipt with proof of purchase. Attach the label to the outside of the parcel, covering or removing previous shipping labels. If you use the Dillard’s label, the policy directs you to drop the return at a USPS location.

Keep the mailing receipt and use a traceable method. Dillard’s recommends insuring the parcel as well. The return request should match what is actually in the package; do not add an unrelated item simply because there is room in the carton. If you have purchases from different orders, follow the instructions for each rather than assuming one label and one fee will cover every return. Keep all records until the credit is resolved.

09 / THE DETAILS

Can you use your own label instead of paying $9.95?

Yes. Dillard’s allows you to use a carrier of your choice if you pay its shipping charges. The published independent-shipping address is Dillard’s, 600 Carnahan Drive, Maumelle, AR 72113.

Compare the actual postage and any insurance cost with the $9.95 Dillard’s label before choosing. Buying your own label is not automatically cheaper, especially for a heavy parcel. Include the required purchase proof and package the merchandise so it reaches the warehouse in returnable condition.

Here is an illustration of the standard deduction: an eligible $100 merchandise refund would become $90.05 after a $9.95 label charge, before sales tax and any product-specific adjustment. If you buy postage yourself, that cost is paid separately to the carrier. Neither route should be described as a free mailed return. Retain the tracking number because the retailer’s ability to match and assess the item is separate from the parcel’s transport.

10 / THE DETAILS

Does Dillard’s charge a restocking fee?

Certain products purchased on dillards.com can have a restocking fee. The policy says the amount is disclosed in the Shopping Bag before checkout. There is no single published percentage that should be applied to every Dillard’s return.

For an affected product, the fee and applicable tax are deducted from the refund. It applies whether you mail the item to the warehouse or return it at a store. If you use the retailer’s mail label, its $9.95 charge is additional to the restocking fee.

Check the original order information before comparing refund totals. For example, saving the mailing charge by visiting a store may still leave a separately disclosed product fee. If you cannot find the disclosure or the charge does not match it, ask Customer Service to identify the fee attached to your specific product. A shipping deduction and a restocking fee are different costs and should be explained separately.

11 / THE DETAILS

Will you get money back or Dillard’s merchandise credit?

For eligible ordinary returns, Dillard’s offers a refund in the form and amount of the original tender, including sales tax, or merchandise credit at the customer’s choice. Original shipping charges are not refunded.

Think about the choice before the return is completed. Merchandise credit may suit a shopper who wants to buy something else immediately, while an original-payment refund may be better when the goal is to reduce the cost of the original purchase. The two are not interchangeable once you are planning how to use the money.

Compare the refund with the amount paid for the returned item, then account for the retained original shipping and any return-label or disclosed restocking charge. Do not compare it with the full order total when you kept other products. Keep the return receipt, which provides a clearer starting point for a payment question than the original shipping confirmation alone.

12 / THE DETAILS

How do Afterpay and check refunds work?

For returned merchandise purchased with Afterpay, Dillard’s says the purchase price is issued as a Dillard’s gift card or credited back to the Afterpay account. Confirm which outcome is being processed for your return.

A gift-card refund is not the same as a credit being applied to the installment account. Check the Afterpay transaction and its payment schedule, and contact the provider if the account still shows an amount you believe should have been adjusted. Do not assume that walking away with store credit means the installment agreement has disappeared.

Check purchases have another special rule: Dillard’s imposes a ten-day waiting period before issuing a cash or check refund. That waiting period is not a universal processing estimate for every payment method. Bring the purchase and return records when asking about it, and distinguish a payment-specific hold from an ordinary parcel still travelling to the warehouse.

13 / THE DETAILS

How do you return a gift to Dillard’s?

For an eligible gift bought in a Dillard’s store, the recipient can return it at a Dillard’s store for a gift card or merchandise credit. Do not expect the recipient to receive cash simply because the giver used a card.

For a gift purchased online, Dillard’s allows the return-by-mail route using the Customer Receipt instructions, or an eligible store return for a gift card or merchandise credit. Related shipping fees are the recipient’s responsibility under the gift-return wording.

Keep the receipt or available POP information with the gift. The usual product condition, packaging and eligibility restrictions still matter; a gift is not automatically exempt from clearance or personalization rules. If the recipient is far from a full Dillard’s store, compare mailing costs before choosing the route. Tell the associate or Customer Service that you are the recipient so the intended gift-return outcome is clear before processing starts.

14 / THE DETAILS

What if the item arrived damaged, defective or incorrect?

Dillard’s says its stated nonreturnable restrictions do not apply to merchandise that is damaged, defective or shipped in error. The ordinary original-unused-condition wording also recognizes a manufacturer’s defect.

Inspect the order promptly and photograph the problem, the product identification and any damaged packaging. Explain exactly what happened: a wrong size sent by the warehouse is different from ordering a size that does not fit, and an existing flaw is different from damage caused after purchase.

Contact Customer Service for the appropriate route and ask how shipping and any product-specific fee will be handled in that case. Do not quietly send an exception item as a normal change-of-mind return and hope the warehouse infers the problem. Keep the case reference and the instructions you receive. The exception is useful protection for a problem purchase, but the public wording should not be stretched into a promise about every later wear-and-tear issue.

15 / THE DETAILS

Can you exchange an item or get a price adjustment instead?

An exchange still depends on the item being eligible for return. The policy’s nonreturnable categories are also non-exchangeable, so asking for another size does not automatically avoid a clearance or personalized-item restriction.

For an eligible purchase, ask the store or Customer Service whether the replacement is available and how any price difference will be handled. Do not assume an old sale price is reserved while your return travels through the mail, or that including a handwritten replacement request creates a new order.

Dillard’s explicitly says it does not issue price adjustments. A later discount therefore is not, by itself, a published right to receive the difference. If your question is about a defective item or an incorrect charge, describe that actual issue separately. For return help, use the official Customer Service page and have the receipt, POP information and any return tracking ready. The main policy does not publish one bank-refund deadline covering every tender, so ask for the issued-refund status on your specific transaction.
