Macy's accepts most eligible merchandise within 30 days of purchase or delivery when it is unworn, unaltered, in original condition and still has its tags. Store returns are free. Eligible online orders can be mailed free by Star Rewards members; nonmembers generally pay $9.99 plus tax. Important exceptions include a 3-day reporting window for scheduled-delivery furniture, 120 days for mattresses with possible fees, and a 14-day Herald Square-only rule for Burberry.
What is Macy's return policy?
Most Macy's merchandise can be returned within 30 days of purchase or delivery. The item should be unworn, unaltered and in its original condition, with tags attached and original packaging when applicable. The main policy uses both purchase and delivery as clock starts; category sections make the applicable start clearer for many products.
A store purchase must be returned to a Macy's store. Most macys.com purchases can be returned in a store or mailed back. The headline rule does not override shorter windows, location restrictions, final-sale labels, partner-seller instructions or large-item fees.
| Purchase or category | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Most merchandise | 30 days from purchase or delivery |
| Scheduled-delivery furniture | Report within 3 days of delivery |
| Burberry at Macy's | 14 days; Herald Square only |
| Mattresses and adjustable bases | 120 days from delivery; fees can apply |
| Registry purchases | Up to 90 days from event or purchase |
| Nectar mattresses | 365-night manufacturer trial |
Is there a fee to return items to Macy's?
In-store returns are free. For an eligible online order returned by mail, Star Rewards members receive free return shipping. Macy's deducts $9.99 plus tax from a nonmember's refund. Store purchases cannot be mailed.
Free mail returns do not cover lamps, wall art, mirrors, furniture and furniture accessories, beds or area rugs. Those products can carry pickup charges, nonrefundable delivery charges or a 15% fee. A mail fee is different from a restocking or preference fee, so a large-item return may have more than one deduction.
Before sending an ordinary online return, check whether joining or signing into Star Rewards changes the mail option shown. For furniture, mattresses, rugs and large home goods, start with the category instructions instead of generating a standard label.
Can you return Last Act and other final-sale items?
No. Last Act merchandise is final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged or price adjusted. Last Act rugs are also sold as is, with no cancellation or post-purchase service. Do not rely on older third-party summaries that describe Last Act as returnable.
Macy's also lists food, beverages, live plants, gourmet gifts, Macy's gift cards, and altered or personalized merchandise as final sale. Special-order furniture requires a nonrefundable 25% deposit that is forfeited if the order is canceled or returned. Pool tables and furniture marked As Is are not returnable.
Some third-party categories are also listed as final sale, including family-planning products, groceries and beverages, pet food and products, plants and portable power stations. Because that list appears inside the third-party seller section, apply it to seller merchandise unless the product page states otherwise.
What is Macy's furniture return policy?
Furniture delivered through scheduled delivery has the shortest major deadline in Macy's policy. Contact Macy's within 3 days after delivery for a preference return or to report damage or a defect. Preference returns must be as new, carry a 15% restocking fee, and do not receive a refund of delivery charges. Call 1-888-822-6229 to begin the process.
Furniture shipped by UPS or directly by a vendor follows a different rule: 30 days from delivery, original condition and packaging, a 15% return fee, and no refund of shipping charges or surcharges. These items cannot be returned to a store.
The distinction matters. A sofa delivered by a scheduled truck does not inherit the ordinary 30-day online window. Inspect scheduled furniture at delivery, photograph damage, and keep the delivery paperwork. Waiting until the fourth day can change the available remedy even though the general Macy's policy says 30 days.
How do mattress returns work at Macy's?
Most mattresses and adjustable bases receive a one-time return or reselection within 120 days of delivery. The product must be undamaged, unstained and in good condition. Once a return is requested, pickup must be scheduled within 14 days. Delivery charges are not refunded, and Macy's charges a $99 pickup fee.
A 15% preference fee applies to many brands, including Tempur-Pedic, iComfort, Bedgear and most others. The first return of Purple, Simba, Saatva, Goodful, Sealy2GO and Leesa mattresses avoids that 15% preference fee, although the $99 pickup charge still applies to a reselection. Nectar advertises a separate 365-night manufacturer trial; that is not the ordinary Macy's window.
A 120-day trial is therefore not necessarily a free return. On an expensive mattress, 15% plus $99 and a nonrefundable delivery charge can be substantial. Confirm the exact brand treatment before purchase and protect the mattress from stains.
Macy's mattress return details
| Mattress group | Return cost |
|---|---|
| Purple, Simba, Saatva, Goodful, Sealy2GO, Leesa | $99 pickup; no 15% preference fee on first return |
| Tempur-Pedic, iComfort, Bedgear, most other brands | $99 pickup plus 15% preference fee |
| Nectar | 365-night trial under the manufacturer's policy |
Can you return perfume and makeup to Macy's?
Macy's says cosmetics and fragrances can be returned if they do not meet your needs, within the applicable 30-day period. Keep the product, packaging and proof of purchase and avoid using more than necessary to evaluate it.
Designer fragrance can be stricter. Louis Vuitton fragrances must be sealed and untampered, and engraved bottles are final sale. A general beauty rule should not be used to bypass a designer boutique's stated conditions.
What are the rules for designer brands, jewelry and watches?
Burberry purchases have 14 days from purchase and can be returned or exchanged only at Macy's Herald Square. The item must be unused and unaltered, with Burberry tags and hygiene seals attached and the original receipt. Personalized items and pierced earrings are final sale.
Louis Vuitton allows 30 days from purchase with the original receipt and the product in perfect, saleable condition. Personalized and made-to-order pieces are excluded. Longchamp returns also have 30 days but are accepted only at Herald Square.
Fine jewelry and watches receive 30 days from delivery, with price tags attached and the merchandise in original condition. Special-order and size-altered items are final sale. Macy's inspects these returns, and inspection can take up to 14 business days before the refund proceeds.
How do you return a Macy's order without a receipt?
With proof of purchase, Macy's refunds an eligible return to the original payment method. Without proof, Macy's can issue store credit based on the lowest selling price during the previous 180 days. That can be much less than the amount originally paid.
Backstage is different. Macy's may first try to find the purchase through an account number. If it cannot, a qualifying no-receipt return receives store credit at the lowest price during the previous 90 days, and the store may request a name and address.
Lacking a receipt does not erase the deadline, condition standards, location rule or final-sale status. Search the Macy's account, confirmation email or payment record before accepting a lower-value credit.
Can a Macy's Backstage item be returned to a regular Macy's?
A Backstage purchase must be returned or exchanged at a Macy's Backstage location within 30 days of purchase. It should be unworn and unaltered with the tags attached. Backstage jewelry and watches must return to the same store with original packaging and tags.
A regular Macy's department cannot substitute for the required Backstage location. Items labeled Backstage final sale are sold as is and receive no return, exchange, adjustment or warranty.
How do gift and registry returns work?
A gift recipient using a gift receipt or registry number receives store credit, not cash back to the recipient. Registry merchandise purchased before the event can be returned for up to 90 days after the event date. Merchandise purchased after the event has up to 90 days from purchase.
A promotional free gift normally must be returned with the qualifying product. Macy's can deny the return or deduct the gift's value if it is missing. For Buy One, Get One promotions, the discount is allocated proportionally, so the refund reflects the adjusted price of the item returned.
How do partner and third-party seller returns work?
Items sold and shipped by a third-party seller generally must be returned to that seller within 30 days of delivery. Start through Purchase History. Furniture and mattresses from third-party sellers cannot go to a Macy's store. A store-accepted seller return can spend 5–10 business days traveling to the seller, after which the seller may take another 10 business days to process it.
ReBag pre-owned watches, jewelry and handbags must be mailed directly to the seller with tags, paperwork, receipt and packaging; stores do not accept them. Lids merchandise also goes back to the vendor by mail. Online LensCrafters purchases must be mailed to LensCrafters, while eligible eyewear receives 30 days from the dispense date.
Toys"R"Us merchandise bought from Macy's gets 30 days and may be returned through Macy's, but a ToysRUs.com purchase cannot. Finish Line items bought through Macy's receive 30 days from delivery and must be unworn and saleable.
Where do rugs, lighting and home accessories go back?
Online area rugs can be returned by mail or at selected stores with a Rug Gallery; a rug bought in a store must go to a Rug Gallery within 30 days of purchase. Rugs should be unused and undamaged, and preference returns need original packaging. Pickup charges can apply, while delivery fees and surcharges are not refunded.
Lighting returns start through Customer Care at 1-800-289-6229 within 30 days of delivery. Lighting cannot be returned to ordinary stores or Furniture Galleries. Lamps, mirrors and wall art generally require original condition and packaging and can carry a 15% restocking fee; an in-store purchase in this group may still be barred from an in-store return.
How long does a Macy's refund take?
An in-store refund is usually processed immediately, although the bank may take additional time to post it. Macy's says a mailed return is processed within 10 business days after receipt, and a card refund can take another 5–7 business days to appear.
Third-party seller returns can take longer because the product must reach the seller before processing. Fine jewelry and watch returns can undergo inspection for up to 14 business days. Gifts receive store credit, and no-proof returns receive store credit based on the applicable lowest-price rule.
Has Macy's published its 2026 holiday return policy?
Macy's had not published a 2026 holiday-return extension on the current policy pages when this guide was checked. Older seasonal dates should not be treated as current. Use the standard or category-specific deadline until Macy's announces new terms.
Short windows, final-sale products and large-item reporting requirements may remain excluded from a seasonal extension. The order's displayed deadline and current official page control.
What should you check before making a Macy's return?
- Identify whether the purchase came from Macy's, Backstage, a boutique, partner or third-party seller.
- Confirm whether the clock begins at purchase, delivery or an event date.
- Keep tags, packaging, receipt and promotional gifts together.
- Use a store when possible to avoid the nonmember mail fee.
- Report scheduled-delivery furniture problems within 3 days.
- Calculate mattress and furniture fees before requesting pickup.
- Save the carrier scan or store receipt until the refund posts.
