Most unopened items sold by Target can be returned within 90 days for a refund or exchange. Different rules apply to electronics, Target Plus purchases, Target-owned brands, and some other categories. Start with the item’s seller and return deadline—not just the Target name on the order.
How long do you have to return something to Target?
These are starting points. Check the receipt and the product’s Shipping & Returns section for item-specific restrictions.
Target’s return exceptions · Circle 360 benefits
| Purchase type | Standard return window |
|---|---|
| Most items sold by Target | 90 days |
| Most Target Plus partner items | 30 days |
| Electronics and entertainment, excluding Apple and Beats | 30 days |
| Apple and Beats products | 14 days |
| Mobile phones purchased in-store or through Order Pickup | 14 days |
| Target-owned brands, with a receipt | One year |
| Eligible Circle Card purchases or Circle 360 member purchases | An additional 30 days, with exclusions |
When does Target’s return window start?
For ordinary in-store purchases, use your purchase date and the deadline on your receipt. For Target.com purchases, Target says the window begins when you receive the item, including delivery or pickup.
That distinction matters if an order spends several days in transit. Check each item’s order details rather than calculating every deadline from the checkout date.
Can you return something to Target without a receipt?
Sometimes. First, try to recover proof of purchase.
- Check your Target account or app for a receipt or return barcode.
- Check your shipping and delivery confirmation emails.
- Ask whether Guest Services can retrieve the transaction using your original payment card.
Target lists receipt lookup for Circle Cards and major third-party credit cards. A lookup is an option to try, not a guarantee that every transaction can be recovered.
Without proof of purchase, an approved return may receive a merchandise return card. Target Plus purchases require proof of purchase. Losing the paper receipt does not prevent a return if you can supply an eligible digital record instead.
Is a merchandise return card the same as a gift card?
No. Target’s merchandise return card is issued for approved non-receipted returns, requires government-issued ID, and can be used only in Target stores.
Keep the receipt issued with the card. Don’t assume you can spend the balance online.
Can you return items after 90 days?
There is no blanket guarantee of a late return. Before treating the purchase as overdue, check whether it qualifies for a longer window through a Target-owned brand, an eligible membership or payment benefit, or a registry.
If the applicable deadline has passed, ask Guest Services about your specific purchase before traveling. Don’t assume a late return automatically becomes store credit.
Do Target Circle members get extra time?
Eligible Target Circle Card purchases and Target Circle 360 member purchases receive an extra 30 days. For an otherwise eligible item with a 90-day policy, that means 120 days.
The benefit is not a reason to assume every free Target Circle account has a longer deadline. Exclusions include non-returnable items, Target Optical purchases, contract mobile phones, and certain online SNAP/EBT purchases.
Check your order’s deadline and eligibility rather than adding 30 days automatically.
What is Target’s one-year return policy?
Target-owned brands have a one-year return policy with a receipt if you’re dissatisfied. This is a brand-specific benefit, not a one-year window for everything Target sells.
Confirm that the item belongs to an eligible Target-owned brand. Limited-time designer collections can follow different rules. The Circle Card extension does not add another 30 days to the owned-brand window.
Can you return opened or used items?
Opening an item can affect eligibility. Target’s general policy allows denial of opened or damaged merchandise, but category-specific exceptions exist.
Describe the actual condition: opened packaging, a used product, a missing accessory, and a defective item are different situations.
What about opened makeup and beauty products?
Most beauty products can be returned even if opened, within 90 days with a receipt, or up to 120 days when purchased with a Target Circle Card.
This exception should not be applied to unrelated products.
Which items cannot be returned?
Target’s exclusions include:
- Trading cards and trading-card accessories.
- Personalized products and digital downloads.
- Opened or unsealed breast pumps.
- Open or defective collectibles.
- Gift cards, except where legally required.
- Selected Target Plus products.
Opened music, movies, video games, and software are generally exchange-only for the same title. Opened airbeds are exchange-only for a similar item.
How do electronics, Apple products, and phones differ?
Check the shorter deadlines in the table before opening or setting up your purchase.
Phones may also carry a restocking charge of up to $35, subject to restrictions; Target says unopened phones do not incur that charge. Carrier-contract cancellation fees can apply separately.
Electronics and phone exceptions
Before returning a device: back up personal files, sign out of accounts, remove personal data, and gather its accessories. Ask Target which reset or activation-lock steps apply to your device.
How do you return an item to a Target store?
Take the item to Guest Services, along with a receipt, return barcode, or the original payment card for a possible lookup.
For a purchase linked to your account:
- Open your purchase history.
- Find the transaction.
- Select the return option.
- Follow the prompts to display the barcode.
Bring accessories and purchase documentation together. Before leaving, check the amount and refund method on your return receipt.
How do Target.com returns work?
Open My Purchases, select the online order, and choose Return. For missing or damaged items, use Fix an issue where available.
Follow the options shown for that item. You may receive a store-return barcode or mailing instructions. If Target requires a mailed return through this process, its instructions say it will provide a free return label.
Pack the original item, packaging, and accessories. Use the carrier specified on the label and keep the drop-off receipt until the refund is resolved.
Target.com return instructions
Is the original delivery charge refunded?
Not automatically. Shipping refunds depend on the reason for the return; a change of mind does not necessarily qualify. Ask Guest Services if you believe a shipping charge should have been refunded.
How long does a Target refund take?
Target distinguishes refund approval from the money appearing in your account.
Refunds usually return to the original payment method. Multiple payment methods may receive separate credits.
Keep the return receipt and tracking record. If a refund is missing, establish whether Target has approved it before asking your card issuer to investigate.
Target’s refund methods and timing
| Stage | Published typical timing |
|---|---|
| Circle Card refund after approval | Up to 2 days |
| Other credit-card refund after approval | Up to 5 days |
| Online Return Center inspection and processing | Average of 7–10 additional business days after receipt, before approval |
Can you exchange an item at Target?
Target offers in-store exchanges on most eligible items within their applicable windows. If an exchange cannot be completed, staff may offer a return followed by a new purchase.
For a Target.com exchange, contact 1-800-591-3869. Target says it can process a return and new order, subject to availability, while honoring the original purchase price.
Target Plus partner items cannot be exchanged. Ask about returning the item and placing a separate order instead.
How do gift returns work?
With a gift receipt or packing slip, a store gift return generally receives a Target GiftCard. A portion originally paid with a merchandise return card is refunded that way.
Target says gift-receipt returns cannot be processed on the same day the gift was purchased.
If you lack the paperwork, ask the gift giver to send a gift receipt or contact Guest Services. Target.com gifts can also be returned by mail with assistance.
Do registry gifts have a longer return window?
Baby and wedding registries allow up to one year after the event date for most new, unopened items, using the registry return barcode.
Wish lists generally allow up to 90 days after purchase. Ordinary shopping lists do not receive an extended window.
Target also states that a minimum registry or wish-list spend is required to qualify. Check the options in your registry account; don’t assume every gifted item receives a year.
Why is the refund smaller than the price tag?
Promotional discounts can change the refundable amount.
For BOGO purchases, Target distributes the discount proportionately across the qualifying items. Returning one item therefore refunds its discounted value, not necessarily its original shelf price.
A promotional gift card can also reduce the refund on the qualifying purchase. Compare the return amount with the receipt’s discount allocation before treating the difference as an error.
How do you return furniture or other large items?
Some large items qualify for carrier pickup, but pickup is not available for every purchase. Contact 1-800-591-3869 with the order details before arranging transportation yourself.
Target’s pickup instructions generally require the item to be disassembled, boxed, and available at the original delivery point. Confirm preparation requirements and the pickup window for your order.
What if an item arrives damaged or the return is declined?
For an online order, report the problem through the order’s Fix an issue option. Keep photographs of the item, packaging, and shipping label as a practical record. Follow the instructions provided before discarding anything.
An early refund does not always mean the mailed return has been accepted. Target may reverse a refund after inspecting an ineligible item.
If a return is refused, ask whether the issue is the deadline, condition, proof of purchase, or an item-specific restriction. That identifies what—if anything—you can resolve.
What is Target’s holiday return policy for 2026?
A specific 2026 holiday extension was not confirmed in the official pages reviewed for this guide.
Use the deadline shown for your purchase until Target publishes applicable seasonal terms. Dates from a previous holiday season should not be treated as this year’s policy.
What should you check before making the trip?
- Confirm the seller, item category, and applicable deadline.
- Find your receipt or digital return barcode.
- Gather the item, packaging, and accessories.
- Check whether you need a store return, mailing label, or pickup.
- Ask how the refund will be paid and keep the return record.
