Nike, Adidas or Lululemon? Return Policies Compared with Under Armour and New Balance

A pair of running shoes can feel comfortable for ten minutes in your living room and completely different halfway through a run. A training shirt has a simpler test: does it fit before you remove the tags?

The return policy matters because those two tests are not treated the same way.

Of these five brands, Nike gives eligible direct purchases the broadest everyday trial: 60 days to try shoes and gear. Lululemon has a separate 30-day footwear trial, while its ordinary clothing returns require unworn, unwashed items. Adidas, Under Armour and New Balance generally expect ordinary returns to remain in their original or unused condition.

The number of days is only the beginning. Under Armour’s 60 days start at purchase. New Balance’s online window starts at shipment. Nike’s online window starts at delivery. And Adidas currently says an online purchase cannot be returned in one of its stores.

Here is how those differences affect a real shopping decision.

Which five athletic brands are we comparing?

We chose Nike, Adidas, Lululemon, Under Armour and New Balance because their U.S. ranges extend across footwear and men’s and women’s clothing. They let you compare a whole workout wardrobe: shoes, shirts, shorts, leggings and other training essentials.

This is a comparison of five major brands, rather than a ranking by sales or market share. It covers purchases made directly from the brands in the United States. Buying the same shoe from a department store, sporting-goods chain or independent running shop means using that seller’s return policy instead.

How do the five return policies compare at a glance?

On a phone, swipe the table sideways to see every column. These are the ordinary return rules; product-specific trials and exclusions are explained below.

BrandStandard windowCan you work out in it first?Where an online order can go back
Nike60 days from delivery online or purchase in a Nike storeEligible purchases have a trial; exceptions applyMost Nike stores, excluding Clearance stores, or the online shipping route
AdidasMost online orders: 30 days from receipt; store purchases generally 30 days from purchaseOrdinary returns need original condition, tags and packagingOnline return process; current store guidance excludes online-to-store returns
LululemonClothing: 30 days from delivery online or purchase in store; footwear trial: 30 days from original purchaseShoes can be tested; ordinary clothing must be unworn and unwashedMail or a regular store; outlets do not process returns
Under Armour60 days from purchaseOrdinary returns cannot be worn, used, washed, altered or openedBrand House, Factory House or an offered online return route
New Balance45 days from shipment online or purchase in storeOrdinary returns need new condition; certain sports bras have a Fit PromiseNew Balance or Factory stores, or mail for online orders

The useful question is not simply “Who gives me the longest window?” It is “What can I do with this particular item during that window?”

Nike: the strongest option here for trying eligible gear

Nike’s U.S. policy gives you 60 days to try an eligible purchase and decide whether it works for you. Online purchases count from delivery; purchases in a Nike store count from purchase. Keep proof of purchase.

That is a meaningful advantage when the uncertainty is performance. If an eligible running shoe feels wrong once you actually run in it, Nike’s trial addresses that situation more directly than a policy requiring the shoe to remain unused. The same broad trial wording covers eligible Nike gear, not just footwear.

There are important limits. Nike Clearance store purchases are final, and Clearance stores do not accept returns from other Nike stores or online. Some products are nonreturnable, including Custom Jersey By You soccer jerseys, Nike Pre-Orders and SNKRS Reserve orders. Check the product’s own terms before treating a limited release like an ordinary pair of training shoes.

Nike Members get free returns. Members using the shipping process can receive a UPS return QR code or print a prepaid label. The QR route still requires a boxed return; Nike says to drop it off within 21 days of initiating the return or exchange. That is a handover instruction, not a replacement for the purchase’s eligibility window.

Guests can also return eligible orders, but Nike’s shipping instructions say they pay the shipping cost. An eligible Nike store can be a more convenient alternative.

Lululemon: separate the shoe trial from the clothing rules

Lululemon’s ordinary apparel policy is a 30-day window. Online clothing purchases count from delivery, while store clothing purchases count from purchase. Products need to be unworn and unwashed, with hang tags attached, purchase proof and original packaging where applicable.

Footwear is the useful exception. Lululemon says you can test shoes and return or exchange them within 30 days of the original purchase date if they do not work out. Keep the box and proof of purchase. Do not use the online clothing delivery clock as the starting point for that shoe trial.

For example, someone buying both leggings and running shoes should make two decisions. Check the leggings’ fit while leaving them returnable. Test eligible shoes within the footwear trial, retaining the box. A shoe trial does not mean the leggings can go through several workouts and still qualify for an ordinary return.

Returns are free through Lululemon’s process. Online purchases can go back by mail or to a regular store, and exchanges are handled in stores. Lululemon outlet stores cannot process returns. The current overview also says you can contact the brand to arrange an online return for a store purchase.

Sale shopping needs a separate check. We Made Too Much items are generally final sale, but eligible members can make in-store exchanges or return sale items for a Lululemon gift card. That is not the same as getting the original card payment back. Customized products have their own final-sale restriction.

Adidas: keep it original, and match the return to the purchase channel

Adidas generally gives direct online purchases 30 days from receipt, provided the products meet its return conditions. Keep apparel tags attached, accessories complete and shoes in their original shoe box. Include components such as spare laces or accessories that came with the product.

This is not a general workout trial. If you are deciding about a pair of shoes, preserve their original condition while checking the fit. Wearing them outdoors and then deciding they are uncomfortable is a different situation from returning a new pair you do not want.

Limited releases deserve a closer look. Adidas says some Hype products have seven- or 14-day windows, and the item-specific period is communicated when you buy. Other products are marked final sale. Personalized merchandise is generally nonreturnable, with a manufacturing-defect exception in the published conditions.

The channel restriction is easy to miss: Adidas’s current U.S. store-return guidance says online purchases cannot be returned in stores. It also says store purchases cannot be returned online. Start an online order’s return through the website or app and follow the instructions supplied for that order.

For an Adidas-owned store purchase, the general period is 30 days from purchase, with shorter limits for some special items. Franchise stores can have their own policy even though they carry the Adidas logo. Buy with Prime orders use the Amazon account route; the published instructions exclude exchanges for those purchases.

Under Armour: 60 days, with original-condition and store-type rules

Under Armour offers eligible direct purchases a 60-day return period, with free returns through its stated process. Count from purchase, including for an online order. That gives you less time after arrival than a delivery-based 60-day window when shipping takes several days.

The condition requirement is stricter than Nike’s trial. Gear cannot be worn, used, washed, altered or opened, and it needs its original tags. Footwear must include the original shoe box in its original condition. Preserve the packaging while you decide about fit and size.

Under Armour offers U.S. online return options through Happy Returns or UPS. Happy Returns does not require packaging and initiates the refund after the return is processed at the Return Bar. UPS returns begin refund processing after the gear is received and processed at the warehouse. Keep the drop-off receipt whichever route you choose.

Online gear can also go to a Brand House or Factory House, but store purchases have a distinction: Factory House purchases cannot be returned or exchanged at a Brand House. Factory House locations can accept the eligible purchase categories described in the policy. Check the selling location before choosing the store for your trip.

Another easily missed detail concerns mailing back a store purchase. Under Armour says those refunds are issued as UA e-gift cards. If you want a refund to the original payment method, check the in-store route and payment rules first. For example, a PayPal purchase returned in a store receives a UA gift card under its published refund table.

New Balance: 45 days, a nonmember fee and a sports-bra exception

New Balance accepts eligible products in new condition within 45 days. Its headline policy counts from shipment for online orders and purchase for store purchases. Keep a receipt, order confirmation or packing list; the brand can refuse worn or damaged ordinary returns.

New Balance’s page also has store-return FAQs that use purchase-date wording for online purchases. If the dates affect your order, confirm the displayed deadline rather than assuming delivery starts a new 45-day period. Acting within the earlier relevant date avoids relying on the most generous interpretation of mixed wording.

Store returns are free at New Balance and New Balance Factory stores. Mailed online returns are free for members; nonmembers have a $5 restocking fee deducted. Store and event purchases must use the applicable in-person route rather than being mailed as online orders.

The notable workout exception is the Fit Promise for specified sports bras. Eligible styles bought through newbalance.com or qualifying New Balance retail stores can be tried in activity, with a 45-day purchase- or shipment-based return period. The detailed program excludes Factory-store purchases. Check the current list of eligible styles; the promise does not cover every bra, shirt or shoe.

For a normal pair of New Balance shoes, keep them new while deciding. A trade-in offer for gently used shoes is a different transaction, typically involving a voucher on accepted items, rather than an ordinary refund of what you originally paid.

Which brand is best if you need a real workout trial?

For eligible shoes and clothing, Nike is the clearest broad trial choice among these five. Its 60-day try-it period is more useful for a performance question than a longer-looking deadline that requires unused merchandise.

For shoes specifically, Lululemon offers a shorter, clearly stated trial. Remember its purchase-date clock, the original box and purchase proof. Its clothing policy remains a separate decision.

For a sports bra, New Balance’s specified-style Fit Promise adds an option that its ordinary new-condition policy would not suggest. Check the exact style and purchase location before relying on it.

Adidas and Under Armour are more straightforward choices when you can settle the fit while preserving the required condition. A longer window to return an unused product is helpful, but it does not become permission to use it in the gym.

How much could a return cost you?

Membership changes the practical comparison. Nike Members have a free shipping-return route, while guests pay the carrier under its instructions. New Balance’s nonmember online return has a $5 deduction, while members’ online returns and eligible store returns are free. Lululemon’s stated return process is free, as are eligible Under Armour returns through its process. For Adidas, review the details supplied in the order’s return flow, including product-specific restrictions.

Consider an illustrative $120 New Balance merchandise refund. A $5 nonmember deduction leaves $115 before tax or other adjustments. A free eligible store return can avoid that deduction, but a long drive may cost more than the fee you save.

Also separate the cost of sending an item back from the delivery charge on the original order. Nike’s exceptions page says original shipping is not refunded unless you received the wrong item. Adidas and Under Armour also retain original shipping under their ordinary refund guidance. A free return label does not necessarily make the entire order’s shipping cost refundable.

Will the refund go back to your card?

Check the selected return route and refund method before handing over the item. A refund to the original payment method and a brand gift card solve different problems.

Lululemon’s member benefit for eligible sale items gives an in-store exchange or gift-card outcome. Under Armour’s mailed store-purchase returns receive an e-gift card, and its in-store PayPal treatment also produces a gift card. Adidas offers an e-gift-card refund choice and reserves gift-card treatment in certain circumstances under its policy.

That matters if the goal is to pay down the original purchase. Receiving a $100 store credit gives you future shopping value; it does not put $100 back into the bank account that funded the purchase.

Timing is another distinction. Adidas describes up to 14 business days for the original-payment credit after approval in its return instructions. New Balance asks you to allow up to 14 days after receipt of a shipped return. Under Armour’s online estimates can run up to 14 business days, depending on the payment and process. A carrier-delivered scan comes before a completed warehouse refund.

Do holiday extensions make the policies more generous?

They can give you more calendar time, especially for gifts, but check the current offer and the item’s conditions.

On October 18, 2026, Lululemon’s live U.S. pages listed purchases made October 13 through December 24 as returnable or exchangeable until January 23. For this holiday season, that is January 23, 2027. Its general return conditions still apply; do not assume that holiday language automatically extends every product’s wear trial.

Under Armour’s help page says it typically extends purchases made November 1 through December 31 from 60 to 90 days. That wording is a reason to check the order’s actual holiday terms before promising someone a 90-day deadline. For the other brands, use the ordinary windows unless your order includes a confirmed holiday extension.

For a gift, save the receipt and check how a recipient’s refund will be issued. Extra time does not guarantee cash back to the recipient.

What should you check before buying a whole workout outfit?

Look at the purchase item by item. A shoe trial, a tagged-shirt return and a final-sale accessory can all sit in the same basket with different outcomes.

Before checkout:

  • Identify the seller. A brand logo on the product does not tell you whose return policy applies.
  • Check the condition rule. Decide whether you need a workout trial or only time to assess an unused item.
  • Find the starting date. Purchase, shipment and delivery are different events.
  • Keep what the return needs. Tags, shoe boxes, components and purchase proof can determine eligibility.
  • Compare routes and refund forms. A store trip may save a fee, while a different route may produce credit instead of a card refund.
  • Inspect limited and sale items before paying. A short special-release window or final-sale label can override the general rule.

For an uncertain performance purchase, start with the trial provision. For an unused outfit that simply needs another size, concentrate on the deadline and easiest return route. That gives you a more useful comparison than choosing the brand with the largest number on its returns page.
