Academy Sports + Outdoors
return policy.

Academy has a 60-day general window, with detailed exceptions for opened equipment, vehicles and other specialized merchandise.

October 7, 2026

The short answer

Academy Sports + Outdoors generally accepts most unused, new-condition merchandise within 60 days of purchase, with refunds based on the original payment method. Keep the receipt, packaging, tags, parts and accessories. Store purchases and online pickup orders must be returned to a store; eligible shipped orders can go to a store or back by mail. Without a receipt, Academy may verify a card purchase; if it cannot, the outcome is generally lowest-price merchandise credit with photo ID. Equipment and final-sale exclusions apply.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Academy’s return policy and 60-day deadline?

Academy generally accepts most unused items in new condition within 60 days of purchase. The purchase date on the receipt controls the ordinary rule for store and online purchases. Its Help Center repeats the 60-day initial-purchase period, so do not automatically substitute delivery as the start date for every shipped order.

A product's category can change the conditions or route. Non-electric bicycles have an expressly stated channel-specific clock, while firearms, fuel-powered equipment and other categories have final-sale restrictions. The broad return window therefore needs to be read alongside the actual product's exception.

Use the original receipt or online purchase record to mark the date, then decide before using or unpacking restricted merchandise. For a mailed return, leave time to gather the paperwork and obtain the correct shipping instructions. The policy says Academy issues a mail refund after receiving and inspecting the product; creating a return request does not mean the item has already been accepted or refunded.

02 / THE DETAILS

Does Academy count an online return deadline from delivery?

The cited general rule measures 60 days from the initial purchase. Do not automatically substitute delivery for the receipt’s purchase date when calculating the deadline for a shipped order.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return used items, clothing without tags or incomplete equipment?

Ordinary returns must be resalable without visible wear or use, in original packaging and with the paperwork, parts and accessories. Apparel must retain its original tags. Keep those materials during a fit check or while deciding whether the equipment suits your needs.

Academy states exceptions to the general resalable-condition requirement for a product defect, damage during transit or a valid performance issue. That wording does not guarantee an original-payment refund for every opened sporting product. Category rules can instead require a manufacturer warranty claim or an exchange for the same merchandise.

For example, opened electronics with a defect can be exchanged for the same product, while a bat removed from its packaging with damage or a defect is routed to the manufacturer. Explain the real reason for the return and keep photographs of an arrival problem. Check the product-specific restriction before discarding seals, boxes or accessories, because the condition of the actual item determines what remedy remains available.

04 / THE DETAILS

Does an opened Academy product always qualify for an original-payment refund?

No. Category-specific rules can require a manufacturer warranty claim or a same-merchandise exchange instead. The ordinary deadline alone does not guarantee a card refund for every opened sporting product.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can Academy look up a return without a receipt?

Yes, Academy says it will attempt to verify a purchase made with a credit or debit card. If verified, the policy allows a refund at the purchase price to the original payment method or an even exchange. Losing a paper receipt does not automatically mean the only option is store credit.

If Academy cannot verify the purchase, it offers merchandise credit equal to the item's lowest price sold in the past 90 days, including sale or clearance prices across Academy stores. This 90-day price-history calculation is different from the general 60-day return period; it is not a 90-day extension for making a return.

A no-receipt return requires valid government-issued photo ID, and Academy may retain ID and return-history information for authorization and fraud prevention. For online orders, first retrieve the online receipt from My Account or the app's Order Status section. Bring whichever transaction record is available, and confirm the credit amount or refund method before the return is completed.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Academy store purchases and pickup orders by mail?

No. Merchandise bought in an Academy store or ordered online for in-store pickup must be returned to an Academy store. Academy permits an eligible store purchase to be returned at any Academy location. Its pickup FAQ also states that both curbside and in-store pickup orders cannot be processed by mail.

Bring the complete item and the purchase receipt or online receipt. With a verified purchase, the general remedy is a refund based on original tender or an even exchange. A gift receipt produces merchandise credit or an even exchange instead of a cash refund to the recipient.

Keep the pickup or store return receipt afterward. An online checkout does not by itself mean the warehouse mail route applies: fulfillment by pickup is the important distinction here. If a single order involved different fulfillment methods, identify which transaction and item you are returning. For special or bulky purchases, ask Customer Care about handling before transporting the equipment to a counter.

07 / THE DETAILS

How do you return a shipped Academy.com order by mail?

Eligible purchases shipped from Academy.com or the Academy app may be returned to a store or by parcel carrier for a refund. For the mail route, include the online receipt and complete its requested information. If you do not have it, print a copy from My Account and follow the Return Instructions by Mail at the bottom of the document.

The official policy lists the Academy Returns Center at 1549 Primewest Parkway, Katy, TX 77449. Follow the order's instructions for packaging and shipping rather than using an unrelated store address. Keep the tracking number and carrier acceptance record.

Academy refunds after it receives and inspects the merchandise. Mail is described as a refund route; the store route also provides exchange options. Purchases requiring bulk or special shipping need Customer Care assistance, and pickup orders are excluded from mail returns. Confirm any shipping cost or label arrangement for the actual order before paying a carrier, since the policy does not advertise a universal free return label.

08 / THE DETAILS

How does Academy refund cash, cards, gift cards and payment plans?

Academy generally refunds based on the original payment method. Cash and check purchases receive cash, and a cash refund requires the original receipt. Credit and debit purchases generally go back to the relevant card; authorized payment systems such as PayPal ordinarily return value to the appropriate account. Gift-card or merchandise-credit purchases are refunded as merchandise credit.

The policy warns that Apple Pay, Klarna and Sezzle refunds may be applied through a different method, leaving an outstanding balance on the original payment arrangement. For Bread Pay, a refund with a receipt is applied to the loan associated with the order. Check both the retailer's return record and the payment provider's account rather than assuming an accepted return instantly closes every installment obligation.

For a missing refund, identify the original tender and the method shown on the return receipt. A retailer refund and a payment provider's account adjustment can be separate stages. Contact Academy with the purchase and accepted-return details if the amount or destination does not match what was recorded.

09 / THE DETAILS

Does Academy refund shipping charges on a return?

For an ordinary shipped-order return, Academy describes the refund as the purchase price less other Academy.com charges, unless the return qualifies for those charges to be refunded. The same distinction appears for an online item returned at a store. A merchandise refund does not automatically include every delivery or service charge on the order.

Academy's shipping-cost FAQ says it refunds shipping and other Academy.com charges for defective merchandise, products damaged in transit or on arrival, and Academy order errors such as sending the wrong product. Give support the correct issue description and retain photos or the original shipment record so it can assess the exception.

The page does not promise one fixed turnaround for every refund. For mail, the policy establishes receipt and inspection before Academy issues the refund. Keep carrier tracking and the processing record, then check the payment method. For return postage, ask which label or reimbursement instructions apply to a defective or incorrect shipment before arranging independent shipping.

10 / THE DETAILS

Can you return opened bats, golf clubs, racquets or fishing equipment?

Academy places baseball and softball bats, golf clubs, paddles, racquets, and fishing rods and reels under a specific packaging rule. An eligible item still in its original unopened packaging may be returned for a refund or exchange. If you removed it from the packaging and found damage or a defect, Academy directs the claim to the manufacturer for warranty repair or other coverage.

This restriction matters before using equipment in a game, practice session or fishing trip. The general 60-day policy does not create an unrestricted performance trial for the listed products. Keep the receipt and product model information because a manufacturer may need them to identify the warranty claim.

If damage is visible on delivery, document it and ask Academy for help before opening more packaging or using the item. The return policy and shipping-refund exception address related but distinct questions: one determines the remedy and destination, while the other addresses whether an outbound shipping charge is refunded. Explain both concerns when contacting support.

11 / THE DETAILS

Can you return opened electronics, air beds or massage guns to Academy?

Electronics, air beds and massage guns qualify for an eligible refund or even exchange when the original packaging is unopened, tags remain attached, and all paperwork, parts and accessories are included. Opening the package changes the available remedy under the product-specific section.

If the package has been opened and the product is damaged or defective, Academy allows an exchange for the same merchandise only. That is a narrower outcome than a refund to your payment card or an exchange for an unrelated model. The policy does not describe a general change-of-mind return for these opened items.

Keep the box and all components until you know the product is suitable. If it fails or arrived damaged, record the model, serial information where available and what happened, then bring the purchase proof or contact Customer Care. Do not assume the broad exception for performance issues overrides this named category's same-product exchange limit. Use the actual item's section to determine which route is supported.

12 / THE DETAILS

What is Academy’s return policy for bikes, e-bikes and ride-ons?

Unused non-electric bikes may be returned within 60 days. Academy expressly counts that period from purchase for store transactions, pickup for online or app pickup orders, and delivery for bikes shipped home. Damaged or defective bicycles go to the manufacturer for warranty repair or claims under the stated category rule.

Hoverboards, e-bikes, electronic scooters and electric or battery ride-ons require the original packaging or factory seal to remain intact for an ordinary refund or exchange. Once opened or unsealed, a defect or damage is routed to the manufacturer. This is not the same unused-bike provision that applies to a conventional bicycle.

Items containing hazardous-material components may have transport restrictions and must be returned or exchanged in a store. Before trying to mail an electric ride-on or battery-equipped product, contact Academy and identify the model and issue. Keep the purchase, pickup or delivery confirmation so the applicable date and required route can be established for that particular item.

13 / THE DETAILS

Which Academy products are final sale or cannot be returned?

Academy lists several final-sale categories. Firearm and ammunition sales are final except for brands sold exclusively by Academy; damage or defects ordinarily go to the manufacturer for warranty help. The policy also makes sales final for bows, crossbows, knives, explosive binary targets, CO2 tanks, BB bullets, air rifles, smokeless powder and propellant, tree stands, and other shooting or hunting equipment.

All gasoline or fuel-powered items are final sale, with manufacturer handling for defects. Trading cards cannot be returned or exchanged. Physical and digital gift cards are nonrefundable and cannot be returned, apart from any legally required treatment of small remaining balances.

For boats, canoes, kayaks, trailers and trailer kits issued with a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin, registered title prevents a return. If title has not been registered, the MSO must accompany an eligible return. Preserve the product paperwork and ask about the actual item's restriction before use, registration or arranging a shipment; a receipt alone does not remove these exclusions.

14 / THE DETAILS

How do Academy personal-item and gift returns work?

For bathing suits, pools and inflatables, sunglasses, mouth guards, earplugs and earbuds, Academy requires the merchandise to be unused or unworn, in its original packaging, with tags, paperwork, parts and accessories. These are category-specific conditions worth checking before opening a hygiene-related item or using it outdoors.

A purchase with a valid gift receipt can be returned for merchandise credit at the purchase price or an even exchange. The gift recipient should not expect cash or a refund to their own card merely because the purchaser paid by card. Without a verifiable purchase record, the lowest-price merchandise credit and photo-ID rules may apply.

Keep the gift receipt separate from product tags, and include all components when giving or returning a multi-part item. For a gift bought through pickup, use a store; for an eligible shipped purchase, the online receipt and mail instructions determine the route. Final-sale categories remain excluded even when the item was a gift.

15 / THE DETAILS

Who can help with an Academy return or missing refund?

Academy publishes 1-888-922-2336, [email protected], and live chat through its Customer Service page. For a product requiring bulk or special shipping, the return policy explicitly asks you to contact Customer Care for help before attempting a normal parcel return.

Have the store receipt or online order number, purchase date, product description and issue ready. If the receipt is missing, explain whether you paid by credit or debit card so the verification route can be considered. For mail, supply tracking and the receipt or return instructions included in the parcel.

If a refund is missing, distinguish warehouse delivery from Academy's inspection and from the payment account posting the credit. Ask support to confirm whether the return was accepted, the amount issued and the destination tender. For an installment payment, also check the provider's account because Academy warns that some refunds use another method while the original arrangement still has a balance.
