ThredUp Return Policy: 14 Days, Fees & Refund Choices

ThredUp’s 14-day postmark deadline, $3.99 item fee, $10.99 label, shopping-credit refunds, final sale exclusions and misdescribed-item process explained.

By October 29, 2026

The short answer

Eligible ThredUp returns must be postmarked within 14 days of item delivery and remain in the condition received. Standard returns have a $3.99 restocking fee per item. A ThredUp label is free when choosing non-cashoutable shopping credit; an original-payment refund using its label has a $10.99 shipping deduction. You can instead pay your own postage. Final-sale items are excluded, and misdescribed goods use a separate review process.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is ThredUp’s return policy?

Eligible items must be sent back with a postmark within 14 days of delivery and in the same condition in which they arrived. Final-sale items are not returnable under the ordinary policy. Start from your ThredUp Returns page so the request is associated with the correct order and product.

This guide concerns purchases from the main ThredUp shop. It does not apply the same rules to every separately branded resale partnership or to clothing you send in for consignment. Check the seller and order record before following instructions: returning a purchase and asking for your unsold Clean Out items back are different processes.

02 / THE DETAILS

Does the 14-day deadline mean requesting, mailing or warehouse arrival?

The official policy specifically requires the return to be postmarked within 14 days of delivery. Creating a request or printing a label alone is not the same as sending the parcel. Plan enough time to get the package accepted by the carrier before the window ends.

Keep the drop-off receipt and tracking as evidence of when you shipped it. If a delivery arrives shortly before a trip, the return window still relates to delivery rather than the day you unpack your suitcase. For items arriving separately, check each item’s delivery and available return details rather than assuming the last shipment restarts every earlier item’s clock.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can I try on clothing, wash it or remove original tags?

The return requirement is to preserve the condition in which the item was received. Do not treat secondhand clothing as an unrestricted wear-and-return trial. Avoid washing, altering or using an item while deciding, and preserve any attached tags or identifying materials that arrived with it.

Compare the actual garment with the listing promptly, including size and condition. A short indoor fit check should not become a reason to change the condition before returning it. If you discover a stain, measurement discrepancy or other listing problem, document what arrived and use the inaccurate-description process rather than assuming an ordinary fit return will automatically waive the fees.

04 / THE DETAILS

How do I create a ThredUp return?

Open the Returns page, select the items, choose the most relevant reason for each, select the refund method and confirm. The system generates return papers that can be downloaded and printed. Review the selection carefully because the refund choice affects both shipping cost and where the money ends up.

Do not send a garment back with no corresponding return request or identifying paperwork. If an item has a genuine description or quality problem, choose the appropriate reason before completing the request. Keep the return number and a copy of the generated documents so support can find the request if a label fails to appear or an adjustment is needed.

05 / THE DETAILS

How much is the restocking fee, and is it charged per item?

Ordinary returns carry a $3.99 restocking fee per item. It is separate from any return-postage charge. A free return label with a credit refund therefore does not mean that the entire return is free of deductions.

For an illustrative three-item return, the ordinary restocking total is $11.97 before any applicable label fee. Check each item’s actual paid price when deciding whether returning it makes sense. A discounted item is not refunded at its earlier advertised price, and promotions or discounts are not reimbursed. A qualifying description-error review may waive a fee, but that is a specific assessment rather than the normal outcome for an unwanted fit.

06 / THE DETAILS

What are the three refund and shipping choices?

ThredUp offers a credit refund with a free label, an original-payment refund using its $10.99 label, or an original-payment refund with postage you arrange and pay yourself. The ordinary restocking charge remains a separate consideration whichever shipping route you select.

Choose based on what you want to do with the value. If you expect to buy again, shopping credit may avoid the label deduction; if you need money back on the payment account, compare the paid-label option with your own postage. Do not describe the own-label choice as free shipping: it removes ThredUp’s label charge, but you still pay the carrier you choose.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can I cash out shopping credit or convert it to a card refund?

Credit issued for a return is non-cashoutable. Once the refund is processed, ThredUp cannot change that shopping-credit refund back to your original payment method. That makes the choice more significant than simply selecting a different delivery speed or label format.

Keep purchase-refund credits separate from seller earnings that may have their own payout options. A shopper who chooses credit to save postage should expect to spend that refund within ThredUp rather than withdraw it to a bank. If you selected the wrong return type, ask support before processing; do not wait until the credit is already issued and assume it can be converted afterward.

08 / THE DETAILS

What happens when I originally paid with ThredUp credits or a discount?

Amounts paid with ThredUp store credits return as store credits. Choosing original form of payment does not transform the credit-funded portion into a card refund. Where another payment method was also used, the original-payment refund can contain both the credit portion and the other payment portion.

For an illustrative $40 purchase funded by $15 credit and $25 on a card, do not expect all $40 to be cash simply because you selected original payment. Applicable fees can further affect the amount. The policy also says promotions and discounts are not reimbursed: check the actual charged amount and request details instead of valuing the return at an undiscounted listing price.

09 / THE DETAILS

How long do refunds take, and are instant credits guaranteed?

Some credit returns may be refunded when the carrier first scans the parcel into transit, but that is conditional. If no instant credit appears, wait for delivery and processing rather than assuming the scan guarantees immediate funds. Keep track of both the package movement and the return status.

The policy page contains different timing descriptions: one says credits return five to seven days after receipt and card refunds need another three to five business days; its refund-method list says processing takes three to five business days after warehouse delivery. These statements do not establish one guaranteed combined arrival date. Ask support about your return if the displayed estimate passes.

10 / THE DETAILS

Does ThredUp refund original shipping, and what will I actually receive?

Original shipping is not refunded on an ordinary return. Add any applicable restocking and label deductions before comparing the expected credit with the amount initially charged. Returning every garment does not necessarily reverse the entire checkout total.

For illustration, returning two eligible items priced at $20 each with the $10.99 original-payment label would leave $21.03 from their $40 merchandise value after two $3.99 item fees, before applicable tax adjustments or other transaction-specific differences. Original outbound postage would remain excluded. Use the actual return calculation for your order; this example explains the listed fees and is not a promise of a particular refund amount.

11 / THE DETAILS

Do I need a printer, or can the carrier scan a QR code?

The current instructions say ThredUp does not provide a scannable QR-code shipping option and requires a printed label. Download the documents through the website. If you lack a printer, arrange printing before the postmark deadline; the help article suggests public printing services such as libraries or shipping stores.

Keep the return slips as well as the outer label. They identify the items and requests inside the parcel. If the label does not generate, the article suggests refreshing the page; if that does not solve it, contact support with the return number. Do not substitute an unrelated label from another order to save a printing trip.

12 / THE DETAILS

Can I combine several returns into one package?

ThredUp allows multiple returns in one package as long as all corresponding return slips are included. This can simplify packing, but it does not change each item’s deadline, eligibility or ordinary per-item restocking charge. Make sure every garment is included in an actual return request before sealing the parcel.

Lay out the items beside their slips so you can check identifiers and quantities. If the requests have different labels or refund methods, ask support which label and refund treatment to use rather than assuming consolidation eliminates every fee. Keep a record of what you packed and the carrier receipt so a missing-item question can be investigated against the correct requests.

13 / THE DETAILS

What if an item is not as described, damaged or possibly inauthentic?

For a listing or quality problem, begin the return using Inaccurate Description or Quality Issue and complete the extra field explaining what was incorrect. ThredUp says processors review the item and waive the restocking fee when applicable. Describe the actual discrepancy rather than choosing a problem reason for a simple change of mind.

For an original-payment refund with covered shipping because of that mistake, the instructions say to start with the $10.99 label and then contact support with the return number. Ask for the specific adjustment; do not assume it is automatic. Authenticity concerns should go directly to Customer Service for the next steps.

14 / THE DETAILS

Can I return final-sale items or change the refund method later?

Final-sale items are excluded from ordinary returns. Check the item’s designation before buying and preserve the order details. A return for another size is still a return for eligibility purposes; the ordinary policy does not establish an automatic exchange that overrides a final-sale designation.

If the return type was selected incorrectly, the creation article invites contacting support before the return is received, with the return number and item. The policy separately says the method cannot be changed after processing. Act promptly rather than assuming that mailing a package pauses this restriction. For a genuine misdescription, raise the specific problem through the dedicated process instead of assuming either universal acceptance or universal refusal.

15 / THE DETAILS

Can customers in Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico use ThredUp’s label?

ThredUp does not create prepaid return labels for orders shipped outside the contiguous 48 states, including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Its policy directs those customers to arrange their own postage, with refunds to the original payment method. The normal item condition and timely-return requirements still matter.

Use the current official instructions and required return paperwork when preparing that parcel. Do not mail it to the Oakland corporate office: the contact page explicitly says that address cannot accept returns. If your address or order channel creates uncertainty, contact support before paying postage. International orders have a separate linked help article and should not be treated as identical to a domestic mainland return.

16 / THE DETAILS

How do I contact ThredUp about a missing refund or return problem?

The official contact page offers live chat, [email protected] and text support at (415) 422-9559. The number is presented as a texting route, so do not assume it is a published voice-call returns line. Use the Returns page first for a normal eligible request.

For an unresolved issue, provide the return number, affected item and tracking details. Distinguish a package still traveling from one delivered but awaiting processing, and identify whether you chose shopping credit or original payment. Keep your correspondence until the adjustment is complete. Do not send returns to the corporate address or treat a support message as a substitute for timely carrier acceptance.
