Most eligible Home Depot merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase. Qualifying purchases made with a Home Depot consumer credit card, Pro Xtra credit card, or commercial account receive 365 days, but that benefit does not override shorter rules: major appliances get 48 hours, selected climate and gas equipment gets 7 days, and electronics, furniture, tractors, and specified power equipment get 30 days.
What is Home Depot’s standard return policy?
Most eligible Home Depot merchandise can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase. The refund normally goes to the original payment method. Home Depot can decline merchandise damaged by the customer without a manufacturing defect, and all returns remain subject to approval and fraud-prevention checks.
The 90-day headline does not cover every category. Appliances, selected climate products, gas-powered equipment, electronics, furniture, special orders, custom products, plants, and purchases made with eligible Home Depot credit accounts all have rules worth checking before you transport the item.
Home Depot’s policy does not explicitly define whether the ordinary 90-day clock for an online order begins at purchase, shipment, or delivery. Use the eligibility shown in Order Details and start a close-to-deadline return early.

Which Home Depot products have 7- or 30-day windows?
The 7-day category includes dehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, window and portable air conditioners, and gas generators other than whole-house or stationary models. Pumps, portable evaporative coolers, and portable heaters also moved to seven days under terms effective July 7, 2026.
The 30-day category includes furniture, tractors, framing and roofing compressors, consumer electronics such as televisions and computers, paint sprayers, and specified gas-powered outdoor equipment: trimmers, blowers, chain saws, mowers, augers, tillers, chippers, and log splitters. Halloween and holiday décor also uses a 30-day window under the July 2026 update.
These short-window products generally must be unused and in original factory-sealed packaging. The newer July additions use slightly different wording—unused with proof of purchase—so check the return details for the exact product rather than assuming every opened item qualifies.
How does Home Depot’s 48-hour appliance rule work?
Major appliances—including refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, and built-in or over-the-range microwaves—must be returned within 48 hours after delivery or pickup. Home Depot says weekends are excluded from that calculation. The rule applies even when the appliance remains unopened and factory sealed.
Inspect an appliance before accepting delivery. If it is visibly damaged, tell the driver and refuse it. After acceptance, report damage or defects promptly through Customer Solutions at 1-800-455-3869 or by texting Support to 38698. Ask whether the order qualifies for home pickup. Online major-appliance orders cannot simply be taken to a store.
Appliance-return processing can take up to 12 business days. A debit-card purchase made in a store may require taking the receipt back to a store for the refund. Once 48 hours has passed, do not assume the ordinary 90-day policy will rescue the return; ask about warranty or service options instead.

Do Home Depot credit cards give you 365 days to return items?
Eligible purchases made with a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Credit Card, or Commercial Account receive a 365-day full-refund window beginning on the purchase date. Receipt lookup for these account purchases can also extend to 365 days.
The card benefit does not override shorter category rules or non-returnable exclusions. A major appliance still has 48 hours. Seven-day and 30-day products keep their shorter windows, and custom or final-sale merchandise does not become returnable merely because it was charged to an eligible Home Depot account.
Use the account transaction or receipt to confirm that the qualifying payment method funded the purchase before relying on the longer period.
Can you return something to Home Depot without a receipt?
Home Depot can often locate a purchase made by credit card, debit card, or check within 90 days. Purchases made with an eligible Home Depot consumer or commercial account may be searchable for 365 days. A mobile-wallet purchase may require the physical device used for payment.
If the purchase cannot be located, a non-receipted return requires a valid driver’s license or other government-issued photo ID and goes through a third-party refund-verification system. Approval is not guaranteed. If accepted, the refund may be store credit based on the item’s lowest advertised price.
Purchases made with store credit are also subject to identification and verification requirements. Losing a paper receipt is therefore not always fatal, but it can change both whether the return is accepted and how much is refunded.
Can you return opened merchandise to Home Depot?
Home Depot does not publish one universal rule for every opened product. Its seven- and 30-day categories generally require merchandise to be unused and in factory-sealed packaging, while the ordinary 90-day section focuses on proof of purchase and permits Home Depot to deny customer-damaged items.
That means an opened television, computer, mower, generator, air conditioner, or other short-window product should not be treated like ordinary merchandise. Confirm the category and condition language before opening or assembling it. Bring every component for a full refund; incomplete returns can receive less or be refused.
For a manufacturing defect in store-stock merchandise, Home Depot says an exchange for the same product may be available during the product’s applicable return period. A defect is different from wear, misuse, accidental damage, or dissatisfaction after installation.

Can you return a HomeDepot.com purchase to a store or by mail?
Most eligible HomeDepot.com purchases can be returned free to any Home Depot store. Bring the shipping-confirmation email or order information, the payment card, and valid identification. Associates can look up an online order using the card, order number, or email address. Major appliances are excluded from ordinary online-to-store returns.
For an eligible mail return, open Order Details or contact Home Depot to receive an emailed label for a UPS Access Point. Some products are store-only, including purchases made with e-Store Credit and products that use flammable liquids or gases. Home Depot does not clearly publish whether every mail label is free.
Mail returns generally take about seven business days to process after receipt, and the bank may take up to another 10 business days. Original shipping charges are normally refunded only when Home Depot made an error; Express Delivery and appliance orders can have separate terms.

How do you return a large or heavy Home Depot purchase?
For an eligible large online purchase that cannot go to a store or UPS, call 1-800-430-3376 to ask about home or jobsite pickup. For a large item bought in a store, contact the purchasing store. Do not transport an oversized product until Home Depot confirms the required method.
Home Depot instructs customers to attach the completed return form—or at least the customer name and order number—to each package or pallet. The merchandise should be in original packaging or otherwise wrapped, banded, and palletized, then placed where the carrier can reach it.
Large-item returns can take up to 21 business days to process. Pickup eligibility and charges are not universally stated, so confirm both before arranging labor or transportation.

What is Home Depot’s plant return policy?
Most plants follow the ordinary 90-day policy. Perennials, trees, roses, and shrubs carry a one-year guarantee; after the first 90 days, an eligible return receives store credit rather than an original-payment refund.
Online houseplants, perennials, trees, holiday trees, wreaths, or garlands that arrive dead or damaged must be reported within three days of delivery for a refund. That live-goods rule does not include cut flowers or floral arrangements, which are listed as non-returnable.
Take photographs of a damaged delivery and contact support promptly. For the one-year guarantee, keep the receipt or make sure the purchase can be located rather than assuming the plant tag alone will prove eligibility.
Are Home Depot special orders and custom products returnable?
A qualifying Special Order return or cancellation can carry a restocking fee of up to 15% and must be handled by the store where the order was placed. The Customer Service Agreement for the purchase can impose additional details, so preserve that paperwork.
Custom and made-to-order products are generally non-returnable. Custom blinds and shades use a narrower Guarantee to Fit remedy: an eligible same-product remake for size or mount changes can be requested within 15 calendar days after receiving the package, subject to program limits. That is a remake, not a refund, and online cancellations are not accepted.
Products tailored through The Home Depot Design Center must be handled there; ordinary store and online purchases cannot be returned to the Design Center.
Which items cannot be returned to Home Depot?
Home Depot lists gift cards and store credits, whole-house and stationary generators, utility trailers, cut flowers and floral arrangements, labor and installation services, product samples, tinted paint, and custom or made-to-order products among its non-returnable or non-refundable categories. Products tailored to customer measurements through the Design Center are also excluded.
The generator distinction is especially important: selected portable gas generators have a seven-day window, while whole-house or stationary generators are non-returnable. Likewise, tinted paint and paint samples are excluded; the policy does not separately say that all untinted paint is non-returnable.
Hazardous products that use flammable liquids or gases cannot be mailed even after they are drained. Take an eligible fuel-powered return to a store within its applicable deadline.
How long does a Home Depot refund take?
An in-store return is processed immediately, although a bank can still take time to post the credit. A mail return generally requires about seven business days for Home Depot to process after receipt, followed by up to 10 business days for the bank. Large-item pickup returns can take up to 21 business days, and major-appliance returns up to 12.
With proof of purchase, the refund normally returns to the original payment method. Gift-card, store-credit, and e-Store Credit purchases return to store-controlled credit under their applicable rules. Cash or cash-equivalent refunds over $1,000 may be issued by corporate check.
Home Depot’s live bank-timing table did not reliably map each displayed time to a payment label during research, so do not promise a card-specific posting time beyond the published general ranges. Keep the return record and establish whether Home Depot has processed the refund before contacting the bank.
How do Home Depot gift returns work?
Home Depot directs gift recipients to return the merchandise at a store. An eligible gift return receives store credit rather than cash or a refund to a different personal card. Bring the gift receipt or other available order documentation to make the transaction easier to locate.
Purchases originally paid with a gift card, store credit, or e-Store Credit also return to store-controlled credit. Large credits may be split across multiple instruments, and identification or registration can be required.

What if a Home Depot order arrives damaged or incomplete?
For an ordinary online order that arrives damaged, incomplete, or missing parts, contact Home Depot within 30 days after delivery. Keep the packaging and photograph the product, carton, shipping label, and visible damage before disposing of anything.
Major appliances and live goods have much shorter reporting periods: 48 hours for appliances, with weekends excluded, and three days for qualifying online plants that arrive dead or damaged. Those category-specific clocks control even though ordinary merchandise normally gets 90 days.
A manufacturer warranty, protection plan, repair, and product return are separate remedies. Home Depot’s policy pages reviewed for this guide do not publish universal protection-plan cancellation terms, so follow the documentation for the specific plan.
Does Home Depot have a holiday return extension?
Home Depot had not published a general holiday-return extension on the official policy pages checked for this guide. Use the product’s ordinary deadline unless Home Depot later posts a specific seasonal exception.
Holiday décor itself has a 30-day window under terms effective July 7, 2026. That category rule is not the same as extending the return deadline for purchases made during the holiday season.
