Lowe’s
return policy.

The standard 90-day window, 48-hour appliance exceptions, receipt lookups, return shipping, and refund timing.

Policy checked September 20, 2026 Official source ↗

The short answer

Lowe’s generally accepts most new, unused merchandise within 90 days of purchase with proof of purchase. Major appliances and several other categories have much shorter deadlines—often requiring you to initiate a return within 48 hours of delivery or pickup. Eligible Lowe’s credit-account purchases may get longer windows, but item-specific exceptions still apply.

01 / THE DETAILS

How long do you have to return something to Lowe’s?

Start with the item category, not just the general 90-day policy. Most new, unused merchandise qualifies for the standard window with proof of purchase. The 48-hour rules below concern initiating a return; they are not a promise that every appliance can wait 90 days.

What is Lowe’s return policy for appliances and 48-hour items?

Initiate eligible returns within 48 hours of delivery or pickup for major appliances and designated categories such as portable/window air conditioners, evaporative coolers, construction heaters and parts, paint sprayers, tile saws, and certain motorized vehicles.

Gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws, and pole saws are also listed under the 48-hour rules. They are excluded from the 30-day credit-account extension described below.

Limited 30-day exceptions include merchandise that is unopened, undamaged, and factory-sealed, or unused when not sold in packaging. Designated credit-account, PreLoad Plus Mastercard, and lease-to-own purchases may also qualify for 30 days from delivery or pickup, subject to the named exclusions. Read the item-specific exception before relying on it.

For motorized vehicles, Lowe’s requires the original store and applicable title or ownership paperwork. Report damage or missing items promptly through the store or 1-800-445-6937.

Does a Lowe’s credit card give you 365 days to return items?

Eligible purchases on the accounts named in Lowe’s policy can receive a 365-day window. Those include Lowe’s Commercial Account, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards American Express, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card, and Lowe’s Business Rewards.

Category exceptions still apply. Do not apply the general credit-account benefit to a major appliance or another restricted item without checking its specific terms. A free rewards membership alone is not a qualifying credit-account purchase.

Lowe’s Pay purchases do not receive the credit-card extension. An eligible Lowe’s Pay refund goes to the financing company rather than being paid to you as cash or store credit.

04 / THE DETAILS

Can you return something to Lowe’s without a receipt?

Lowe’s requires proof of purchase. A lost paper receipt does not necessarily mean the purchase is untraceable: the store may locate it using an order number, payment card, digital wallet, phone number, or linked rewards account. Identification may be required.

If the purchase cannot be verified, do not expect an automatic no-receipt store-credit return. Bring the payment method and any confirmation emails to improve the chance of finding the transaction.

Can you return paint, tools, outdoor equipment, or plants to Lowe’s?

Liquid paint, TVs and electronics, water heaters, HVAC products, custom special-order blinds, and most outdoor power equipment generally have 30-day rules. Paint samples cannot be returned.

CRAFTSMAN corded or cordless outdoor power equipment has a 90-day exception. That wording does not mean every CRAFTSMAN product or gas-powered tool receives the same treatment. Some gas-powered equipment instead falls under the shorter 48-hour rules.

Trees, shrubs, and perennials have a one-year return period with a receipt. Other plants, including annuals, have 30 days. Keep the receipt rather than assuming a plant guarantee is receipt-free.

How do you return a Lowe’s online order?

For eligible items, use the order’s return options or bring the purchase and proof of purchase to a Lowe’s store, subject to special location requirements. Ordinary returns can generally be made at any U.S. Lowe’s store.

Mail returns are available when Lowe’s provides a FedEx return label for the order. If no label is provided, follow the store-return instructions. The policy does not establish that every mail label is free, so check any charge shown before choosing shipping.

For a large delivery, contact the store or 1-800-445-6937 about pickup eligibility and arrangements. Do not assume pickup is automatically available or free.

How does Lowe’s issue refunds, and how long do they take?

Eligible refunds generally go to the original payment method. Lowe’s says to allow up to seven business days after the return is completed, depending on the financial institution.

Purchases paid with gift cards, refund cards, merchandise cards, or store credit are refunded as store credit. MyLowe’s Money is returned to the customer’s wallet.

For check purchases returned within three days, the refund is store credit. After three days, cash or store credit depends on verification; cash is not guaranteed. Cash refunds over $1,000 may be mailed by check. Certain scheduled-delivery phone or web purchases have refund-voucher procedures.

Original shipping and delivery charges are not refundable unless Lowe’s made an error. Installation and labor charges are not refundable under the ordinary merchandise-return policy.

Can you exchange Lowe’s purchases or return gifts?

For an eligible exchange, bring the original item and the intended replacement to customer service. The original item still has to meet the applicable deadline and other return requirements.

A gift with its original receipt can be returned within the relevant item’s window. Check the payment and gift-return instructions rather than assuming the recipient will receive cash. For buy-one-get-one promotions, the discount is prorated and affects the refund amount.

09 / THE DETAILS

Does Lowe’s charge a restocking fee on special orders?

Special-order configured products returned or canceled more than 72 hours after purchase can carry a 20% restocking fee. These returns must go to the store where purchased.

The policy includes qualifications for certain orders, taxes, and installation contracts. Read the order agreement before canceling or taking a custom item back. Do not apply the standard off-the-shelf return rule to every configured purchase.

10 / THE DETAILS

What cannot be returned to Lowe’s?

Published exclusions include gift cards, including third-party gift cards; masks; highway trailers; whole-house generators; items sold as-is; paint samples; and trading cards. Used items that may contain bodily fluids or waste are also excluded.

A general 90-day deadline or a qualifying credit account does not override these exclusions. Check the listing, receipt, and any special-order agreement before purchasing an item you may need to return.

11 / THE DETAILS

Is the Lowe’s Outlet return policy different?

Yes. Outlet purchases are generally final sale. The narrow exception covers major appliances with qualifying mechanical or electrical failures reported within 48 hours of possession. Proof of purchase is required, and the return must go to the same outlet.

Cosmetic concerns, an appliance that does not fit, or damage occurring after purchase or delivery do not qualify under that exception. Do not apply the ordinary Lowe’s store policy to an outlet purchase.

How do Lowe’s marketplace and delivery-app returns work?

Lowe’s says third-party sellers on Lowes.com follow its return guidelines. Still check your order’s instructions and the item category.

Purchases made through delivery marketplaces such as Instacart, DoorDash, Shipt, or Uber have a separate route: qualifying in-store returns with proof of purchase within 90 days, subject to exceptions, are refunded for the item and applicable tax as store credit. This is not a promise to refund every service or delivery fee charged by the marketplace.

Can you return holiday decorations to Lowe’s after the holiday?

Christmas and Halloween decorations must be returned by the holiday under Lowe’s seasonal rule. Purchases made after the holiday are final sale.

Do not assume the ordinary 90-day window lets you return seasonal decorations after using them for the holiday. Check for any additional current seasonal terms on the receipt and official policy.

What should you check before making a Lowe’s return?

  • Identify the exact category and whether the item came from an outlet.
  • For a 48-hour item, contact Lowe’s immediately and keep a record of initiating the return.
  • Find the receipt, order number, or payment method for purchase lookup.
  • Check whether a credit-account exception actually covers the item.
  • Keep the product new and unused with its parts and packaging where required.
  • Confirm pickup, shipping charges, or a special-order restocking fee before arranging transport.

These preparation steps do not replace item-specific terms or guarantee acceptance.
