O’Reilly Auto Parts Return Policy: 90 Days, Batteries & Cores

O’Reilly’s 90-day refund window, installed-part restrictions, battery testing, mail RMAs, core refunds, shipping costs and warranty differences explained.

By October 28, 2026

The short answer

O’Reilly allows refund requests within 90 days of the original purchase date on the receipt. Bring the original receipt, original packaging and all supplied materials. A working item that has been installed or used may be refused. Installed batteries cannot be returned unless store testing finds them defective. Online purchases may use stores; eligible shipped orders can be mailed with an RMA. Same Day delivery returns must go to a store.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring the original receipt, packaging and all materials within the 90-day refund-request window.
  2. Explain whether this is an unused part, defect, installed battery or core return.
  3. Keep the return record and original payment card or gift card until the transaction finishes.

Online or by mail

  1. For eligible online shipped orders, request an RMA through My Orders, chat or phone.
  2. Use the authorized instructions; ordinary shipping is customer-paid and Same Day orders return in store.
  3. Keep tracking and request delivery signature if using USPS.
01 / THE DETAILS

How long do I have to return a purchase to O’Reilly?

O’Reilly’s current Returns & Exchanges section allows a refund request within 90 days of the original purchase date printed on the receipt. It covers purchases made online and in stores, but a request remains subject to inspection and approval. Defective-product warranties are handled during their own coverage periods.

Use the purchase date rather than assuming a later installation date restarts the clock. If you ordered parts for a repair that was postponed, review the receipt before the appointment. A long delay can leave you outside the ordinary refund period even if the unopened box has spent the entire time in your garage.

02 / THE DETAILS

Can I return an online order at any O’Reilly store?

Eligible online purchases can be returned at any O’Reilly Auto Parts store throughout the United States or Puerto Rico. Take the product, original purchase receipt, packaging and all materials supplied with it. O’Reilly recommends the local-store route as the quickest, easiest and most economical option when it is available.

The practical advantage is avoiding postage and a parcel’s travel time. It does not waive the condition rules or make a clearance item refundable. Before visiting with a heavy or awkward item, call the intended location through the official store finder and explain whether you need an ordinary product return, a defective-part assessment or a core-charge refund.

03 / THE DETAILS

Do I need a receipt, and can O’Reilly look up a purchase?

The ordinary return instructions require the original purchase receipt. Do not assume an O’Rewards membership, bank statement or phone number automatically substitutes for that document. The separate warranty page also emphasizes keeping original receipts, even though warranty information may be entered into O’Reilly’s database.

For an online purchase, look through your order emails and account records before visiting. If you cannot recover usable documentation, ask support what it can retrieve for the transaction; a lookup is not a published guarantee of a no-receipt refund. Tell the associate the approximate date, item and purchase location so the search concerns the correct sale rather than a similar part.

04 / THE DETAILS

What packaging and accessories need to go back?

O’Reilly asks for original packaging and all original materials supplied with the product. Gather brackets, instructions, fittings and other included pieces before requesting the return. A box holding only the main part may be incomplete even if the missing component looks inexpensive.

For a wrong-fit item, preserve the label and part number so staff can identify exactly what was supplied. As practical preparation, keep loose components in a small bag inside the original package and avoid writing over identifying labels. This makes inspection easier; it is not an additional store rule or a promise that neat repacking reverses installation, wear or another exclusion.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can I return a part after installing or using it?

A refund request within 90 days may be refused if the item was installed or used but still works. The ordinary policy is therefore not an unrestricted trial period for fitting parts to a vehicle and then changing your mind. Confirm compatibility before installation whenever possible.

If the item failed, explain the failure instead of presenting it as an unused return. A defect can involve warranty terms and inspection rather than the ordinary change-of-mind route. Keep the receipt and record the part number and symptoms. Do not assume that a part failing to fix the vehicle proves the part itself is defective; the underlying vehicle problem may need a separate diagnosis.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can I return a battery after it has been installed?

O’Reilly says a battery cannot be returned once installed for any length of time unless it is tested at an O’Reilly store and found defective. The wording does not provide a short grace period for using a good battery and then deciding you no longer need it.

Arrange store assessment if you suspect a fault. A discharged battery and a defective battery are not necessarily the same situation, and the applicable warranty may provide a replacement rather than a cash refund. Keep the receipt and identify when the battery was purchased. Avoid mailing a battery without explicit handling instructions: the ordinary parcel-return process should not be assumed suitable for every battery.

07 / THE DETAILS

What about dry batteries, clearance items and modified parts?

Dry-stored batteries become nonreturnable once opened or after the acid supplied in the kit is added. The online return instructions also exclude clearance items and custom-made or modified parts. Check those conditions before opening a kit, altering a component or buying a clearance replacement as a speculative spare.

A discount alone should not be relabeled by us as clearance; look for the actual sale designation. If the product arrived wrong or damaged, contact Online Order Support with the order number and explain the problem before accepting an ordinary unwanted-item outcome. Support can assess the specific issue, but the policy does not promise that every exclusion disappears when a complaint is raised.

08 / THE DETAILS

How do I get an RMA for a mail return?

A mail return requires a Return Material Authorization, or RMA, from OReillyAuto.com. Account customers can sign in, open My Orders and select Return Items. Guests can request an RMA through online chat or by calling 1-888-327-7153. Use the authorization for the specific order and items you are actually returning.

Do not send a package merely because you found a warehouse address online. The published shipping route is for online purchases originally shipped through USPS, UPS or FedEx; it is not a general mail route for every store transaction. Keep the authorization and follow its destination and packing instructions before handing over the parcel.

09 / THE DETAILS

Does O’Reilly charge return postage or refund original shipping?

Customers pay ordinary mail-return shipping, and original shipping charges are nonrefundable under the published instructions. Cash-on-delivery returns are not accepted. A local-store return can therefore avoid spending postage on an eligible product that can be taken back in person.

Wrong shipments, shipping damage, defects and warranty issues should be reported to support separately. Its instructions say an agent can provide an RMA and a prepaid return label when applicable; do not assume that every complaint qualifies automatically. Ask which charges will be covered before purchasing postage. Compare the likely return value with the cost of shipping a heavy part, especially if a nearby store could handle it.

10 / THE DETAILS

How should I pack and track a shipped return?

Keep the original packaging and all supplied materials together, and use the instructions issued with your RMA. O’Reilly recommends a carrier offering tracking, insurance and delivery confirmation. If you use USPS, it requires requesting a signature at delivery. Retain evidence of carrier acceptance until the return is resolved.

Shipment delivery and return approval are separate events. The online store must inspect the merchandise before issuing credit. If the package contains something not purchased from O’Reilly, or an item it does not approve for return, you may have to pay postage to get it back. Check the part and order number before sealing the box.

11 / THE DETAILS

How long does an approved mail refund take, and where does it go?

The online instructions say an approved item refund usually reaches the original gift, credit or debit card within one to three business days after the online store receives the product. Inspection and approval still come first; do not count only from the date you gave the carrier the parcel.

The policy says retail store credit will not be issued for this online-return process. Keep any gift card until the entire transaction is finished, since a card-funded purchase is not automatically converted to cash. If the credit is missing, give support the RMA, return tracking number and item details, then distinguish return processing from the bank or payment account’s posting.

12 / THE DETAILS

What is a core return, and is it the same as returning the new part?

A core charge is a deposit associated with a recyclable or remanufacturable part. Returning the old core can recover that deposit while you keep the newly purchased replacement. It is a different transaction from asking for a refund on the new working part.

O’Reilly allows core refunds at its locations, and online-order cores can also use an authorized shipping route. Have the original receipt, or the packing slip and confirmation email, and the original payment card where relevant. For an illustrative invoice showing a $150 part and a $30 core deposit, an accepted core return concerns the $30 deposit; it does not refund the $150 replacement you kept.

13 / THE DETAILS

How do I mail a core, and when is the core charge refunded?

Drain all applicable fluids before returning a core. A shipped core requires an RMA through the online return process, and the customer pays return shipping. Taking the old part to a store avoids that shipping charge. The core must be in reusable condition for the deposit to be credited.

For a mailed core, O’Reilly states a three-to-five-business-day refund period after receipt, to the original payment method. That is separate from the one-to-three-day wording for an approved ordinary mail return. Ask support about an unusually heavy, leaking or damaged core before choosing a carrier. The core-return support option is 1-888-327-7153, option 1.

14 / THE DETAILS

Can I mail back a Same Day delivery order or cancel it first?

Same Day delivery orders must be returned in store. They cannot be canceled once placed because of rapid processing; O’Reilly directs customers to wait for delivery and then use a store return or exchange. Tips paid to the delivery driver are nonrefundable.

Other order types have different cancellation opportunities: pickup orders can be canceled, and Ship to Home orders may be canceled before boxing for delivery. Call Online Order Support at 1-888-327-7153, option 4. The page contains inconsistent unattended-pickup timing, so do not rely on leaving an order uncollected to obtain a prompt refund. Request cancellation directly and retain the confirmation.

15 / THE DETAILS

What should I do about a wrong, missing or damaged delivery?

Report missing orders, missing parts, wrong parts and damaged packages within 48 hours of the carrier confirming delivery. Have the order number and a short description ready for Online Order Support. Keep photographs and packaging that help explain what arrived; do not wait until the ordinary 90-day refund period is nearly over.

The website describes a separate investigation for a parcel marked delivered but missing. A report does not guarantee reimbursement. Contact support rather than initiating an ordinary return for an item you never received. For an incorrectly supplied or damaged product, ask about the applicable authorization and label before paying shipping or attempting installation.

16 / THE DETAILS

Is a lifetime warranty an unlimited refund policy?

No. Warranty coverage concerns qualifying defects and depends on the product, receipt and applicable terms; it is separate from the ordinary refund window. The general warranty requires original purchase proof and can provide replacement or refund at O’Reilly’s option. Limited-lifetime language is not permission to return a working part indefinitely.

Ask which warranty applies to your exact product before removing or replacing it. Batteries, tools and larger remanufactured assemblies can have specialized conditions. Keep the installation and purchase records with the receipt, and explain the actual failure. Do not assume that coverage of the part automatically pays labor, towing or every related repair expense.
