The short answer

CarMax gives you 10 days to return a vehicle under its Money Back Guarantee. Bring it to the CarMax store where you bought it, with its condition consistent with when you purchased it. CarMax says a refund due is typically mailed within two weeks. Transfer shipping fees are not refunded, and negative equity from a trade-in must be repaid or financed with another vehicle.

01 / THE DETAILS

How long do you have to return a CarMax car?

CarMax says you have 10 days to return the vehicle under its Money Back Guarantee. That is the current published window; do not rely on older references to a 30-day CarMax return policy.

Use the time promptly. Take the drives you need to make an informed decision, review the purchase paperwork, and arrange an independent inspection if that is part of your decision process. CarMax’s FAQ says the guarantee gives buyers time to decide whether the car is right for their life.

Where do you return the car, and what condition does it need to be in?

Bring the vehicle back to the CarMax store where you bought it. CarMax says the vehicle’s condition must be consistent with its condition when you purchased it.

The published FAQ does not set out a universal mileage allowance or a complete damage checklist. That means you should not assume that a particular amount of wear, damage, modification, or missing equipment will be accepted. Keep the vehicle, keys, and supplied items together, and ask the store before the deadline if you have a condition question.

Does CarMax have a 30-day return policy?

No. The current CarMax Money Back Guarantee is 10 days. Search results and older discussions may still refer to 30 days, but CarMax’s current FAQ answers the question with a 10-day guarantee.

If you are near day 10, do not assume there is a standard grace period. CarMax’s published FAQ does not describe a general late-return extension. Contact the purchase store immediately to ask about your specific situation, but a request is not the same as an approved return.

How long does a CarMax refund take?

CarMax says that any refund due is typically mailed within two weeks of your return date. It does not describe an immediate in-store refund in the FAQ.

Keep your return paperwork and confirm the mailing details before you leave the store. If the expected period passes, use those records when you ask whether the return was completed and whether a refund was issued.

Are CarMax transfer shipping fees refunded?

No. CarMax says that any shipping fees paid to transfer a vehicle are separate from the purchase and nonrefundable. That matters when the car came from another CarMax location: returning the vehicle does not automatically undo the transfer charge.

Ask about the transfer fee before committing to a vehicle from another store. It is a cost to weigh against the ability to return the car within the Money Back Guarantee window.

What happens to negative equity from a trade-in?

Returning the CarMax vehicle does not automatically eliminate negative equity from a trade-in. If financing included that balance, CarMax says you can either repay the negative equity or finance it with a different vehicle, subject to financing approval.

Before returning a financed purchase, ask for the exact balance and how a replacement purchase would be handled. Keep the vehicle return, trade-in balance, and any new financing decision distinct so that you know which obligation is being resolved.

Does CarMax charge a restocking fee, and what should you check before returning?

CarMax’s published 10-day FAQ does not list a restocking fee. Treat that as not published, rather than a promise that every transaction has no charge. The FAQ does specifically identify transfer shipping fees as nonrefundable.

Before you go back to the store:

  • Confirm that you are still within the 10-day period.
  • Return to the store where you purchased the vehicle.
  • Gather the purchase and return paperwork, keys, and any supplied items.
  • Check that the vehicle remains consistent with its purchase condition.
  • Ask how any trade-in negative equity and refund mailing will be handled.
