Advance Auto Parts Return Policy: 45 Days & Unopened Parts

Advance Auto Parts’ 45-day deadline, unopened parts, receipt recovery, core deposits, restocking fees and separate battery warranty rules explained.

By November 1, 2026

The short answer

Eligible Advance Auto Parts purchases have a 45-day purchase-based return window and must be unopened, uninstalled and complete in original condition and packaging. Bring proof of purchase and accepted ID. Final-sale and other exclusions apply. A defective installed part needs a warranty assessment rather than an ordinary unused-item return.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Advance Auto Parts’ ordinary return deadline?

Plan on 45 days from purchase. Identify the date on the transaction record before scheduling a repair or buying several possible replacement parts. The clock does not wait until a mechanic has time to inspect your vehicle.

If the repair is delayed, decide whether you still need an unused purchase while the return period is open. Keep prospective replacement parts separate from old components removed during the job so the two do not become confused. A longer warranty printed on a receipt addresses covered failures; it should not be used as a longer period for returning an unwanted, unopened purchase simply because your plans changed.

02 / THE DETAILS

Can I return an opened or installed part?

The ordinary rule requires unopened, uninstalled merchandise with its original packaging and materials. Opening a package to compare connectors can therefore matter even if the part was never fitted to the vehicle.

Check the part number, application and visible package information before breaking a seal. If you discover a mismatch after opening, explain what happened to the store instead of representing the item as unopened. If a correctly installed component failed, ask for a warranty assessment. Keep any installation documentation relevant to that assessment, and distinguish a suspected manufacturing defect from a diagnosis that later showed the original component did not need replacement.

03 / THE DETAILS

Where can I return an online purchase?

Eligible purchases can go to any Advance Auto Parts store. Bring the transaction evidence and the complete product rather than limiting yourself to the store closest to the original delivery address.

Check the intended location’s hours before traveling, particularly if you need assistance with heavy equipment or a battery. For a multi-item order, identify which products you are returning and keep the others separate. If a household member is helping, make sure they have the order reference and understand the reason. A convenient store route is useful, but it does not remove the deadline, condition requirement or item-specific restrictions attached to the purchase.

04 / THE DETAILS

Which receipt and identification should I bring?

Bring the receipt or online confirmation, plus an accepted ID: a driver’s license, state or military ID, Permanent Resident Card or Border Crossing Card. Keep the packaging with the product so the associate can match it to the transaction.

Before leaving, open the correct confirmation email rather than a shipping notification for an unrelated order. If the receipt contains several similar part numbers, mark the relevant line in your own copy without obscuring other information. Have the original payment information available if support asks for it, but avoid emailing a full card number when an order reference is enough to locate the purchase.

05 / THE DETAILS

How can I recover a missing online receipt?

Use the confirmation email, website Order Lookup, or order history in an Advance Rewards account. A guest shopper who cannot locate the purchase can ask Customer Care for help.

Search your email by the retailer name and approximate purchase date, including another address you may have used at checkout. The person who placed the order may have the record even if someone else collected the part. Recovering proof before visiting can preserve a payment-refund option and avoid a lower no-receipt credit. Keep a saved copy of the order detail with your repair records, especially for a part whose warranty may be relevant long after the box is gone.

06 / THE DETAILS

What if I cannot provide proof of purchase?

The stated outcome is a merchandise gift card valued at the lowest selling price in the preceding 45 days; the new-condition requirement remains. That lookback determines value, not an extra return window.

For illustration, an item you remember buying at $60 could generate less credit if it was offered at $45 during the relevant period. Decide whether that credit meets your needs before completing the return. A bank entry can help you locate the transaction date, but this guide does not promise it replaces the retailer’s receipt. Ask Customer Care whether the underlying order can be found before accepting the no-proof route.

07 / THE DETAILS

How are refunds issued, and is delivery refunded?

Approved receipted returns go to the original payment method. Shipping and handling are excluded unless Advance made an error. Separate those amounts when checking whether the refund matches your purchase.

As a simple illustration, returning a $50 part from an order with a $10 delivery charge does not automatically mean a $60 refund. Use the actual receipt and any agreed correction rather than this example to calculate your own outcome. Keep the return receipt until the payment adjustment appears. If the account has changed or closed, ask how to proceed before processing the transaction instead of assuming a cash refund can be substituted.

08 / THE DETAILS

Can I mail an online return instead?

Ask Customer Care for instructions if a store return is impractical. The current public return page clearly describes the store route but does not provide a universal mail-label process or fee schedule that this guide can promise.

Explain the product type before paying for shipment. A small boxed accessory, a liquid-containing component and a battery may require different handling, and a corporate mailing address is not proof of a return destination. Request the authorized address, packing instructions, any required reference and who pays postage. Save the response with your tracking record so the parcel can be matched to the request if a delivery or payment question arises.

09 / THE DETAILS

Which sale items and product categories are excluded?

Final-sale, clearance and as-is merchandise are nonrefundable. The return page also names exclusions involving opened gaskets and electrical or electronic goods. Check the specific listing and receipt before relying on a general deadline.

If a category restriction is unclear, ask about the exact part before opening or purchasing it. Do not assume every discounted item qualifies merely because it is sealed, or describe a damaged delivery as an ordinary change-of-mind request. Preserve the listing if it affects your decision. Product exclusions make it especially useful to confirm the diagnosis and vehicle application before buying multiple possible fixes in anticipation of returning the unused ones.

10 / THE DETAILS

Is there a restocking fee?

Certain special-order items, commercial tools and equipment carry a 15% restocking fee. It is an item-specific condition, not a fee this guide applies to every ordinary part return.

For illustration, 15% of a $200 item is $30 before considering any other transaction details. Ask whether the fee applies to the specific product before ordering it, especially when staff are sourcing equipment that is not routinely stocked. If you are returning an order because Advance supplied the wrong item, explain that issue rather than assuming the ordinary special-order calculation settles the case. Obtain the actual refund calculation before completing a substantial return.

11 / THE DETAILS

How do buy-one-get-one returns affect the amount?

Advance allocates a discounted purchase price to each item in a buy-one-get-one offer and refunds a returned item at that allocated price. The full regular shelf price is therefore not the expected refund for one piece of the offer.

Keep the complete receipt when returning part of a promotion. Check the amount assigned to the item rather than trying to decide which product was conceptually free. If you want to keep the other merchandise, ask for the actual partial-return calculation. This also helps when comparing an exchange with a new purchase: a current promotion may differ from the transaction you are reversing.

12 / THE DETAILS

Is returning a core the same as returning an unwanted new part?

No. A core deposit concerns the matching old component, which must meet the stated condition requirements: the exact part type purchased, original packaging and rebuildable, undamaged condition. Fluids may need to be drained.

Set aside the replacement box for that purpose before throwing packaging away. Ask the store which components must remain attached and how it wants the specific core presented. Do not mail a fluid-containing part based on a generic parcel label or another auto retailer’s rules. Keep the core-credit receipt separately from any refund for a new part so you can reconcile the deposit without confusing the two transactions.

13 / THE DETAILS

Why do the official pages show 45 and 90 days for warranty coverage?

The return page describes a 45-day warranty period or longer receipt term, while the dedicated general warranty page states 90 days or a longer receipt term. Ask Advance to resolve that difference for your part. The dedicated page separately limits consideration of a defective-part refund to 45 days.

Bring the receipt and explain whether you want replacement or reimbursement. Do not interpret the 90-day wording as a guaranteed cash-refund period. If an issue arises between those dates, request assessment under the dedicated terms rather than discarding the part. Keep the response and any replacement paperwork with the original purchase evidence.

14 / THE DETAILS

What matters in an installed-part warranty claim?

The general warranty concerns qualifying material or workmanship failures after proper installation and normal use. It is tied to the original purchaser and vehicle ownership, and it lists exclusions and part-specific installation requirements. Labor and related expenses are excluded under the written terms.

Record what failed and when, and retain workshop documentation if a particular installation step may matter. For a compressor, clutch or fuel pump, check the dedicated requirements before work begins rather than discovering them during a claim. Ask which evidence the store needs before removing components solely for inspection. A covered replacement part does not automatically settle a separate bill from your mechanic.

15 / THE DETAILS

What changes for battery warranty claims?

Use the battery-specific terms and the period printed on the purchase evidence. Replacement does not restart that period. The battery policy distinguishes a covered failure from discharge, for which it describes recharging rather than automatic replacement.

Take the battery and invoice or confirmation to a store, or contact support if none is nearby. Describe symptoms and application accurately so staff can assess the right issue. Keep replacement paperwork alongside the original receipt instead of treating its later date as a new warranty start. Confirm handling instructions before transporting a damaged or leaking battery; the ordinary unopened-part summary is not a guide to shipping one.

16 / THE DETAILS

Who should I contact about an unresolved return?

Call 1-877-238-2623. The official contact page directs online-order questions to option 1, store-service questions to option 3 and DieHard battery questions to option 5. It also provides text and chat support.

Prepare the relevant order or receipt, product number and a clear description of the decision you need. For a missing refund, include the return date and receipt; for a warranty question, include the defect and printed coverage. Ask for the next step and keep the reference supplied. This is more useful than repeatedly opening a new general request that leaves support without the evidence from the earlier assessment.
