Eligible H&M US merchandise generally has a 30-day return period and must be in resellable condition with tags attached. Store returns are free; registered online returns by mail have a $5.99 deduction. Most online purchases can go to a US store, but H&M HOME bought online must go back by mail. Final-sale and hygiene exclusions apply. Online exchanges are unavailable, and store purchases cannot be returned by mail.
How long do you have to return H&M purchases in the US?
H&M’s general US return period is 30 days. For online merchandise, its instructions require the package to be postmarked within 30 days of delivery. For a store purchase, use the purchase date on the receipt. Registering a return request is a preparation step; leave enough time to actually hand over the package before the online deadline.
Check the item’s conditions before using that general period. Selected designer collaborations and special collections may have different terms, and a final-sale designation can remove ordinary return eligibility. A product arriving on time does not make an excluded item returnable.
Save the order confirmation and delivery notification together. For a mailed return, keep the carrier’s acceptance evidence as well as the request confirmation. If the deadline is close, an eligible online item may be easier to return directly to a store, but HOME products, damaged online orders and other exceptions cannot use that route. Choose based on the actual product rather than proximity alone.
Can you return worn clothing or items without tags to H&M?
Ordinary returns must be in resellable condition with tags attached. A fit check should leave the garment suitable for another customer: keep the labels in place while deciding and protect the item from makeup, fragrance, stains and accidental damage. The return period is not a trial period for wearing clothing outside.
Before packing, compare what you are returning with the original order. Keep any product packaging and included components, and check for collection-specific conditions. Missing tags or signs of use can create an eligibility problem even if you still have a receipt and are within 30 days.
An item that arrived damaged belongs in the customer-service process. Do not describe delivery damage as a change-of-mind return or assume the general store counter can process it: H&M expressly excludes damaged online orders from online-to-store returns. Give support the order number and a clear description of what arrived so it can direct the next step.
How do you return an H&M store purchase?
Take the eligible merchandise and receipt or e-receipt to a US H&M store within the return period. Store returns are free. Bring the original payment method too, particularly when requesting a payment-card refund, so the transaction can be matched to the purchase.
Store purchases cannot be sent through the online mail-return process. An account or shipping label from a different purchase does not change the channel of the original transaction. If the receipt shows an in-store purchase, plan a store visit rather than mailing it to an address found on an old package.
HOME merchandise bought in a store has a narrower location rule: return it to the original store or another H&M store that carries HOME. Puerto Rico also has separate location restrictions. Before traveling with a bulky item, check the store’s assortment and explain where you purchased it. Keep the return receipt after the visit; it is the useful reference if a card credit takes time to appear.
Can you return an H&M online order to a store for free?
Most eligible online orders can be returned free at a US H&M store, excluding Puerto Rico. Bring the items, receipt or e-receipt, and original payment method. Check the product restrictions first rather than treating every order with an H&M confirmation as eligible for a counter return.
The store route excludes H&M HOME bought online, final-sale merchandise, restricted items and damaged online orders. HOME needs the mail route. A damaged online order needs customer-service guidance. A store visit does not override a hygiene exclusion or final-sale designation.
Separate a mixed order into eligible routes before leaving home. For example, a returnable garment and an online HOME purchase may need different handling even though they share an order number. Keep track of which items the store actually accepts and which remain with you. That prevents a later mail request from accidentally including an item already refunded at the counter.
How do you register and mail an H&M online return?
Open the order details and select Return item. Choose the actual items and a return reason, then select a return method and follow the handling instructions supplied for that request. H&M links its US registration platform from the official returns page; start there to avoid using another country’s portal.
If an item cannot be selected, it may be outside the 30-day period or marked final sale. Check the order record before retrying. If the problem is an incorrect or damaged delivery, contact support rather than selecting an inaccurate reason to force the ordinary flow.
Pack only the products registered for that return, use the supplied label or instructions, and cover obsolete delivery labels. Retain the confirmation and obtain proof of carrier handoff. H&M sends tracking information by email once the return package is on its way. Creating a label does not establish that the carrier received it, so keep both the registration and handoff evidence until the refund is settled.
How much does an H&M online return cost?
H&M deducts $5.99 for an online return using its mail process. You do not avoid that deduction merely by returning only one item or by having used free outbound shipping. An eligible store return is free, which can make the counter route useful when the product and location qualify.
Original shipping and handling charges are generally nonrefundable. Compare the merchandise refund with the original order’s separate delivery charge and the return deduction before assuming money is missing. A return fee and an original shipping charge are different parts of that calculation.
For a mixed order, check which products can go to a store and which must be mailed. Do not put HOME merchandise through the store route simply to avoid a charge. Save the amount shown during registration and the refund email so you can ask support about a specific discrepancy. The published ordinary fee should not be treated as a complete resolution for an item that arrived faulty; report that problem first.
What are the return rules for H&M HOME and furniture?
H&M HOME purchased online must be returned by mail, rather than at a store. Furniture should be disassembled and placed in its original packaging for the return. Keep the packaging and components while deciding whether to keep the purchase; the return process becomes much harder if the box or fittings have already been discarded.
An in-store HOME purchase follows the store route and can go back to the original store or another H&M store carrying HOME. That is a different rule from online HOME, even when a nearby store sells a similar product. The receipt or order record establishes which route applies.
Before moving a large item, register the return or speak with support about the instructions for the particular order. Do not infer that an ordinary clothing label authorizes a different size or type of package. If furniture arrived damaged, explain the delivery problem and retain photographs and packaging until H&M confirms the handling method.
Which H&M items are final sale or excluded from returns?
H&M’s US exclusions include bodysuits, hosiery, underwear other than bras, opened cosmetics and earrings. Swimwear without its hygienic seal is excluded, with bikini tops excepted from that seal rule. Merchandise explicitly marked Final Sale, red-sticker sale items purchased in stores, Pre-Loved purchases and gift cards also cannot use ordinary returns.
Read the designation on the product and receipt before removing protective packaging. A discounted price alone is not enough information to decide eligibility; the type of sale label and product category matter. Keep sanitary seals intact while checking fit and avoid opening cosmetics merely to test a shade if you may want to return them.
Special collections and designer collaborations can have additional conditions. Review those terms separately instead of applying the general 30-day rule automatically. If an excluded product arrived wrong or defective, contact customer service with the order details. Do not assume the ordinary final-sale rule answers how H&M will resolve an actual delivery error.
What should you do if an excluded H&M item arrives wrong or defective?
Contact H&M customer service with the order details and explain the actual delivery problem. A product’s ordinary final-sale restriction does not by itself explain the remedy for a wrong or defective shipment; get instructions before sending it back.
Can you mail perfume, nail polish or other hazardous products back?
H&M’s transportation guidance identifies products such as perfume, nail polish, nail-polish remover and aerosols as hazardous goods. Its US restrictions page says it does not accept returns of hazardous materials. If such a product arrived incorrect or defective, contact customer service for assistance.
Do not put a flammable product into a standard clothing return package or assume a prepaid label makes it acceptable. The concern is the contents of the package, not simply whether it fits in the box. Keep it separate while support reviews the issue and wait for the specific instructions it provides.
There is also a packaging detail when reusing a delivery box. If the return contains no hazardous material, H&M says to remove the limited-quantity hazardous-goods label from that box. An old warning label can misdescribe the new contents. Check both the shipping label and any hazard markings before sealing a permitted nonhazardous return.
How long do H&M refunds take, and where does the money go?
H&M generally refunds the original payment method and says most refunds are processed within 14 days of receiving the return. It sends an email when processing is complete. The relevant starting event is return receipt, rather than label creation or the date you first contact support.
For a payment-card purchase, check the original card account. If you paid with a bank-issued gift card, keep that card because the refund goes back to it. Throwing away a depleted prepaid card can make accessing the refunded balance difficult.
Keep the drop-off record, tracking and refund email together. If tracking has not established receipt, investigate the return shipment first. If H&M confirms processing but the money is missing, give customer service the order number, processing date and payment method. Check the expected fee and original shipping charge before reporting a short refund; the total purchase amount is not always the merchandise refund amount.
What happens to H&M gift-card and mixed-payment refunds?
For an online order paid with an H&M gift card or e-gift card, H&M sends a new e-gift card to the email address connected with the order. Check that inbox, including filtered folders, rather than waiting for a credit on an unrelated bank card.
When an order used both a gift card and another payment method, H&M refunds the other method first and places the remaining refund balance on a Merchandise Card. For example, if a return exceeds the amount originally paid by card, the excess does not all become a larger payment-card refund. Keep the original payment breakdown to understand the allocation.
Store purchases paid with an H&M gift card, and returns using a gift receipt, receive a Merchandise Card. An eligible online return may also offer a voluntary Merchandise Card choice during registration. That choice produces shopping credit, so review it before submitting if your goal is money back to the original payment account.
How do H&M returns affect a Klarna payment plan?
H&M processes a Klarna-paid return through Klarna, which updates the payment plan after the return is processed. Follow the status in the Klarna app as well as the H&M return notifications. A carrier handoff alone does not mean the payment provider has already adjusted the balance.
The voluntary Merchandise Card refund choice is not available for Klarna purchases. Use the order’s actual return and payment instructions instead of assuming the card-credit option shown for another purchase applies to this one.
Retain the order number, return tracking and H&M processing email. If the item appears returned at H&M but the plan has not changed, those records help identify where the update is pending. Check the provider’s current payment status directly; do not infer that creating a return request has canceled every scheduled payment. This guide covers H&M’s return workflow, while the payment provider’s own instructions govern how to manage the plan during processing.
Does H&M offer online exchanges, and can Puerto Rico stores accept US online returns?
H&M does not offer online exchanges. For another size or color, the online route is to return eligible merchandise and make a new purchase. The return does not reserve replacement stock or guarantee that the new order will have the same price. Check the replacement’s availability and terms separately.
Location also matters. US online orders cannot be returned at H&M stores in Puerto Rico. Merchandise purchased in a Puerto Rico store must be returned within Puerto Rico. These restrictions should be checked before traveling or sending a gift to someone who plans to use a local store.
For an in-store exchange question, bring the receipt and speak with the store about the actual merchandise. An online no-exchange rule does not establish every possible counter outcome, and a store interaction does not make excluded items eligible. Explain whether the purchase was online or in a store and identify any HOME, final-sale or hygiene restriction before choosing the next transaction.
How do you contact H&M US about a return problem?
Use 1-855-466-7467 or the chat route on H&M’s official US customer-service page. The page offers an AI chat assistant around the clock, with live assistance during its published service hours. Check the current contact page for availability rather than assuming a live agent is present at every hour.
Have the order number or store receipt, purchase or delivery date, product name and payment method ready. For a mailed refund query, add the return registration, carrier handoff evidence and tracking. For damage, an incorrect delivery or a hazardous product, explain that issue before asking for an ordinary label.
Ask a focused question that identifies the route: whether the item can go to a store, whether online HOME needs different handling, or where a mixed-payment refund was sent. Keep any case number and the response with the order records. The official contact interface is a support route; it should not be mistaken for a published direct email address.
