GameStop
return policy.

GameStop ties the deadline and remedy to whether an item is new, pre-owned, opened, defective or part of a restricted category.

October 7, 2026

The short answer

GameStop generally allows unopened new merchandise within 15 days of purchase, while pre-owned refunds and several specialist categories have 7-day limits. Proof of purchase is required, and opened new items are generally not refundable; qualifying defects may receive an identical exchange. Pro benefits extend some new-software and hardware returns and pre-owned defective exchanges to 30 days. Store purchases must return in store. Eligible online mail returns cost $8.99, or $14.99 for consoles, and online items over $500 cannot return in store.

01 / THE DETAILS

How long do you have to return a new GameStop purchase?

For most unopened new products, GameStop gives 15 days from purchase. That includes ordinary new software, hardware, accessories and collectibles, along with unworn apparel whose tags remain attached. Do not assume every item in a gaming order has the same deadline.

Special or Collector editions of video-game software and hardware have a seven-day period. PCs, computer components and accessories, laptops, TVs and monitors also use seven days under the listed category rule. The page's separate Pro-member benefits extend only named categories, not every purchase made with a membership.

Keep the receipt or order number and read the item designation before breaking a seal. The policy says purchase, rather than promising a standard period from delivery. For an online item close to its cutoff, check the order and contact support promptly. A product can be inside the time period yet still ineligible because it has been opened, is final sale, or belongs to another restricted category.

02 / THE DETAILS

What is GameStop’s return policy for pre-owned products?

GameStop's standard period for a full refund on a pre-owned product is seven days. This is different from its deadline for a defective exchange. Defective pre-owned merchandise can generally be exchanged within 15 days, excluding pre-owned PCs and tech from that general exchange provision.

The distinction matters if the item works but you decide not to keep it. An ordinary change-of-mind refund belongs inside the seven-day refund window. A defect reported after that point may qualify for an exchange rather than money back. Pro members have a separate extension for eligible defective pre-owned items, but the policy does not extend every pre-owned cash refund to 30 days.

Keep the product clean, complete and equivalent to its condition at sale, along with the original packaging and components. Save the receipt and test the essential functions promptly so a fault is identified before the relevant period ends. State whether the problem is dissatisfaction or an actual defect; the policy assigns different remedies.

03 / THE DETAILS

Does a defective GameStop pre-owned item always qualify for a cash refund?

No. An ordinary change-of-mind refund belongs inside the seven-day pre-owned refund window. A defect reported later may qualify for an exchange instead. The separate Pro benefit does not turn every pre-owned purchase into a 30-day cash refund.

04 / THE DETAILS

Do GameStop Pro members get a longer return window?

GameStop Pro benefits include a 30-day return period for unopened new software and hardware and a 30-day defective exchange period for eligible pre-owned items. The latter excludes pre-owned PCs and tech. These benefits are category-specific; they do not establish a 30-day refund for every accessory, collectible or pre-owned purchase.

Condition still matters. An opened new product does not become a change-of-mind refund merely because the purchaser has Pro. Final-sale categories also remain excluded. Special and Collector editions have their own seven-day wording, so confirm their actual eligibility before relying on a broad Pro extension.

The policy also permits Pro membership cancellation with a full refund within two days of purchase when no benefits, including discounts, have been used, subject to conditions. If that is your request, keep the membership purchase record and contact GameStop immediately. Returning merchandise and canceling the membership are separate transactions, and a merchandise return does not itself establish that membership benefits were never used.

05 / THE DETAILS

Do GameStop Pro return extensions cover every product?

No. The extensions are category-specific, and the defective pre-owned extension excludes pre-owned PCs and tech. Check the category and remedy rather than assuming every accessory, collectible or pre-owned item gets a 30-day refund.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an opened game, console or accessory to GameStop?

Opened new hardware, software, accessories, collectibles and PCs are generally not returnable for a normal refund. GameStop lists those opened-new categories as nonreturnable while allowing qualifying defective exchanges within the applicable period. Opening a sealed game or console changes the available remedy, even if the purchase is recent.

A product eligible for refund must be clean and resalable in a condition equivalent to how it was sold: unopened if new, or unworn with tags when applicable. Include original packaging and all components. Keep controllers, cables, adapters, inserts and other included pieces together rather than treating the main device as the entire return.

For a fault, describe what happens and retain the purchase proof. General eligible defective products can be exchanged for an identical replacement, whereas PCs and specified tech go to the manufacturer. Do not assume a defect automatically produces cash or a different model. GameStop may offer store credit at its discretion if a qualifying identical replacement is unavailable.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return to GameStop without a receipt?

GameStop requires valid proof of purchase for a return or exchange. Accepted proof includes the order number, order-confirmation email, original sales receipt, packing slip or return barcode. A missing paper receipt is therefore worth checking against your email and online order information before concluding no record exists.

Without valid proof, an item is not eligible for a return or exchange under the published policy. If it qualifies for trade-in, GameStop may accept it at the current trade value, but that is a different transaction and may yield a different amount. A trade-in does not restore the original purchase price.

A return may also require valid government-issued ID except where prohibited. The policy lists a US driver's license, state ID, military ID or passport. Bring the complete merchandise and purchase record, and retain the resulting receipt. GameStop reserves the right to limit returns regardless of proof, so documentation supports verification without overriding condition, timeframe or final-sale rules.

08 / THE DETAILS

Can you return a GameStop online order to a store?

Most eligible online purchases can be returned to a GameStop store without the standard mail return fee. Bring the order number or other valid proof, original packaging and all applicable components. An in-store purchase must be returned in store, rather than through the online mail route.

There are important online exceptions. An online item that exceeds $500 cannot be returned in a store. Refurbished tech, including phones and other smart devices, must be handled through Customer Service. Orders shipped to Puerto Rico, Hawaii or Alaska are eligible for in-store returns only under the stated geographic rule.

If an order combines a geographic restriction and a product restriction, contact support before assuming a route; the general page does not explain every overlap. For a pickup transaction, use the store channel, and check the product's deadline and condition rules. Keep the accepted-return receipt so you can verify whether the remedy was a payment refund, identical replacement or gift-card credit.

09 / THE DETAILS

How much does a GameStop online return cost by mail?

Eligible online shipped returns have a $8.99 return shipping fee. All video-game console returns sent back by shipping are subject to a $14.99 fee instead. GameStop's return-help article summarizes online return fees as $8.99–$14.99, while eligible in-store returns avoid that mail fee.

Compare the route before starting, particularly for an item that cannot go to a store. The online-over-$500 restriction and refurbished-tech process can affect whether the ordinary store option is available. Orders sent to Puerto Rico, Hawaii and Alaska have an in-store-only restriction, so they should not be registered for routine return shipping without support guidance.

Use the authorization and instructions provided for the actual purchase. Include all components and the original packaging, and retain tracking after handoff. The policy establishes return-shipping charges; it does not give a blanket promise that every original outbound delivery charge is refunded. Check the expected refund amount and any deductions in the confirmation or with Customer Service.

10 / THE DETAILS

How do you start a GameStop return online?

GameStop's return-help article says eligible orders can be submitted through its online returns portal. Before starting, check that the purchase is inside the return window and does not fall into one of the portal's excluded order types.

An order containing any digital items, a Same Day Delivery order, or Buy Online, Pick Up In Store cannot be processed through that portal. This is an order-processing restriction, distinct from whether a physical product might otherwise qualify. Digital products themselves are also final sale under the main policy.

The help article says that after submitting the return, no further action is needed until GameStop contacts you. Keep the submission confirmation and follow the issued next steps rather than shipping to an unconfirmed destination. If the order cannot use the portal, contact 1-800-883-8895 or use the appropriate store route. Provide the order number, fulfillment type and product category so support can determine an available process without losing time inside a short return window.

11 / THE DETAILS

Can you exchange a defective GameStop product?

For general eligible merchandise, GameStop allows a defective product to be exchanged for an identical replacement within the applicable return window. That general provision excludes PCs, PC components, laptops, TVs and monitors, which follow manufacturer support. Defective pre-owned items have a standard 15-day exchange period, with the stated exclusions for pre-owned PCs and tech.

If an identical replacement is not available, GameStop says store credit may be offered at its discretion. This is not an unconditional original-payment refund or permission to choose any replacement product. Pro can extend some eligible defective pre-owned exchanges to 30 days.

Report the issue promptly and keep all components. Describe the failure accurately, including whether it existed on arrival or appeared during use. The product's sale condition, category and membership benefit determine which deadline applies. A purchased protection plan or manufacturer warranty may have its own terms, but the standard return page alone does not establish every plan's coverage or a free upgrade.

12 / THE DETAILS

What are GameStop’s return rules for PCs and refurbished tech?

PCs, PC components and accessories, laptops, TVs and monitors have a seven-day return period. Opened new PCs are listed as nonreturnable, and the defective-product section sends the specified computer and display categories to the manufacturer rather than GameStop's ordinary identical-exchange route.

For a manufacturer's contact information, GameStop lists Customer Service at 1-800-883-8895. Have the receipt or order number and model ready. A manufacturer's warranty claim can involve diagnosis, repair or another remedy; the retail return window does not define those separate warranty terms.

Refurbished tech such as phones and other smart devices has another specific restriction: it is returnable only by calling Customer Service, and the additional-information section specifies seven days, unopened. Do not treat the ordinary pre-owned merchandise rule as a universal phone trial. Confirm the route and condition for the actual device before opening the package or visiting a store, and keep its accessories and identifying paperwork together.

13 / THE DETAILS

Which GameStop products are final sale?

GameStop lists trading cards, blind items, clearance products, seasonal items, consumables, individual bundle components, digital products, graded PSA cards, and books, magazines and guides as final sale. These cannot be returned or exchanged under the ordinary policy. A recent receipt does not make an excluded category returnable.

New hardware, software, accessories, collectibles and PCs are also restricted once opened, with qualifying defect handling described separately. Before buying a bundle, note that the policy does not permit returning only an individual component. Keep the item listing and order details so the purchase classification is clear if the return flow behaves differently than expected.

Special promotions may impose additional restrictions. Read the actual offer and product designation before using a code, opening a collectible or redeeming digital content. Pro benefits do not remove the final-sale list. If something arrived incorrect or a shipment is missing, contact support with the order information so the fulfillment issue can be assessed rather than assuming the ordinary final-sale preference rule explains the remedy.

14 / THE DETAILS

How do GameStop gift returns, discounts and installment purchases work?

A return with a gift receipt receives a GameStop gift card or an even exchange. The gift recipient should not expect cash or a refund to their own card just because the original purchaser paid by card. Bring the gift receipt and the complete eligible product inside its applicable category window.

GameStop says a Pro reward, coupon or discount used on the purchase may cause an adjusted refund amount. Compare the accepted-return amount with what was actually paid for the item, rather than its current full price. Keep the original purchase breakdown when several products or a bundle shared a promotion.

The policy also says an eligible return for a Buy Now Pay Later purchase does not eliminate the obligation to make installment payments to the provider. Check the retailer refund and the provider account separately, and follow the provider's payment instructions while the adjustment is processed. Do not assume returning the physical merchandise automatically cancels a scheduled payment before the account records the credit.

15 / THE DETAILS

How do you follow up on a GameStop refund or lost shipment?

With valid proof, an eligible refund generally follows the initial payment method, unless the relevant rule provides an exchange or gift-card credit. The policy says purchase price and applicable taxes and fees are handled under its terms, but does not publish a single universal bank-posting estimate on the main return page. Keep the accepted-return receipt or confirmation and check the payment destination recorded there.

For a missing credit, call 1-800-883-8895 or use the Help Center with the order number, return confirmation and tracking. Carrier delivery shows the parcel reached its destination; it does not itself establish that GameStop accepted the item and completed a refund.

Claims for an order lost in transit or marked delivered but not received must be submitted within 60 days of shipment. That is a shipment-claim deadline, separate from a product's seven- or 15-day return period. Report the actual issue through support and retain the shipping notice so the correct clock can be established.
