Most eligible direct Dell returns must be initiated within 30 days of invoice. Get a CRA before shipping and allow Dell to receive the return within 30 days of authorization. Approved personal-use consumer returns have free labels and no restocking fee; other permitted returns may cost 15%. Excluded commercial arrangements and products do not receive the ordinary right of return.
How to start a return
In a store
- Use the direct Dell order-support route rather than assuming an unrelated retailer can accept the product.
- For a reseller purchase, follow that seller’s policy; direct Dell returns stay in the purchase country.
- Obtain the CRA and approved pickup or drop-off instructions before handing over the item.
Online or by mail
- Enter the order, select Return/Replace Items and complete the identity and authorization steps.
- Back up and remove personal data, gather all included items, and use original packaging.
- Ship with the CRA/issued label in time for Dell to receive it within 30 days of authorization.
What is Dell’s return policy and when do the 30 days start?
For most eligible products purchased directly from Dell, you must initiate the return within 30 days of the invoice date, unless a separate agreement or qualifying promotion changes the terms. The clock is not generally described as 30 days after delivery or first setup.
Find the invoice and compare it with the order record before calculating the deadline. A delayed delivery or waiting to open the box does not by itself create a new start date under the published general rule. Dell says some promotions extend particular products’ periods, so preserve any offer that actually applies to your order rather than assuming a blanket extension.
Eligibility matters as much as timing. The policy excludes certain commercial purchasing arrangements and product categories, including specified enterprise items and customized products. A personal-use consumer computer and an enterprise order placed on payment terms should not be treated as the same return transaction.
| Decision | Rule to check |
|---|---|
| Return window | Initiate within 30 days of invoice; receipt within 30 days of CRA |
| Shipping or fees | Approved personal-use consumers: free label/no restocking fee; other permitted returns may carry 15% and shipping costs |
| Main exceptions | Purchase-order/payment-terms commercial orders; specified enterprise, Wyse, APEX, customized products, software and gift cards |
Do you need a Dell CRA number before returning a product?
Yes. An approved return receives a credit return authorization, or CRA, number. Dell says a product sent without one is unauthorized: it will not receive a refund or credit, and Dell will not ship the product back to you.
That consequence is more serious than simply waiting longer for a refund. Do not use a warehouse address found online or send equipment back with an old label before the current return is approved. Keep the CRA confirmation with the order and follow the instructions generated for that product.
The authorization also creates a second timing requirement. Dell must receive the authorized return within 30 days of approval, or the refund may be reduced or eliminated. Initiating inside the invoice-based period and completing the authorized shipment are separate obligations. Save both dates and obtain a carrier acceptance receipt that proves when the parcel entered transit.
How do you start a Dell return or replacement?
For an ordinary return, open Dell’s order-support route and enter the order number. Choose Return/Replace Items, complete the identity check and follow the steps to submit the request. Once approved, print the label and use the authorized pickup or drop-off instructions.
For a technical problem, Dell first points customers to its support page using the product’s service tag. Troubleshooting or a warranty replacement is distinct from an ordinary return for refund. Describe the actual problem so the team can identify the appropriate route rather than selecting a return reason solely because it appears easier.
Keep the order number, service tag when relevant, invoice and CRA confirmation together. The label is tied to that authorization; it is not a reusable pass for another Dell product. Track the return through the order’s View Details/Return Status options until Dell receives and validates it.
How long do you have to send an authorized Dell return back?
Dell’s main policy requires you to ship early enough that it receives the return within 30 days of authorization. A later bullet says to ship within 30 days, but the refund FAQ repeats the received-within-30-calendar-days requirement. Use the stricter arrival requirement when planning the parcel’s journey.
This is separate from initiating a qualifying request within 30 days of the invoice. For illustration, an approved request near the end of the invoice window does not mean you should post the parcel on the last day of the authorization period and assume transit time is free. The example concerns planning, not a guaranteed extension.
Follow the approved shipping route and keep tracking. If a carrier problem threatens the receipt deadline, contact Dell through the order with the CRA and tracking record promptly. A request for help does not establish that the deadline has been extended.
Does Dell charge a restocking fee or return shipping?
For approved returns initiated on time, Dell provides a label at no cost and waives a restocking fee when the item is defective, Dell made an error, or a consumer bought it for personal use. A general claim that every Dell consumer return costs 15% misses that explicit personal-use exemption.
For other permitted returns, Dell may charge 15% of the actual product price paid, excluding shipping, handling and sales tax. It usually deducts that fee from the refund. For illustration, 15% of a $1,200 product price is $180, but that does not mean a qualifying personal-use consumer owes it.
The commercial-return instructions also say commercial customers ship at their expense. Check the actual purchase classification and agreement before assuming a label or fee rule for a home order applies to a business transaction. Original shipping, promotions and other permitted deductions can separately affect the final credit.
Can businesses return Dell purchases made with a purchase order?
Dell’s general policy does not permit returns from commercial customers who purchased by issuing a purchase order, including an online purchase order, or on payment terms. Do not apply the standard consumer 30-day headline to that excluded arrangement.
Other permitted business returns can be governed by a separate written agreement and may have shipping responsibilities or a restocking fee. Confirm which terms cover the sale with the business order details in hand. Buying through a corporate procurement process can have a different result from buying a personal-use laptop with ordinary consumer checkout.
This distinction is useful before placing the order, particularly for customized or enterprise hardware that may also carry a product exclusion. A technical fault can still call for the applicable warranty or support process, but a warranty remedy is not the same as an unrestricted business change-of-mind return. Use the service tag and your organization’s agreement to ask Dell about that specific case.
Which Dell products cannot be returned under the general policy?
The exclusion list includes APEX; Dell and non-Dell enterprise products such as servers, storage, data-protection and networking equipment; Wyse products; non-Dell software; gift cards except where law requires otherwise; and customized products. Volume-licensed software has no return right unless a written agreement specifically provides one.
Read the category and order terms before assuming that an unused item qualifies. The fact that a product was bought directly from Dell does not erase those exclusions. A custom product is specifically different from an ordinary eligible stocked configuration.
If you ordered the wrong enterprise component or need help with a hardware fault, ask the account or support team about the relevant agreement or warranty route before shipping anything. Do not send excluded equipment to Dell without authorization in the hope that the warehouse will create a refund. The policy’s unauthorized-return warning makes that an especially poor substitute for obtaining the CRA first.
Can you return software bought from Dell?
Software is generally nonreturnable, with narrow exceptions for software Dell authorizes for return. These include a factory-installed operating system or application on an eligible product being returned within that product’s period, sealed physical-media software, and electronically delivered software whose license or applicable terms have not been accepted.
The policy separately excludes non-Dell software products and volume-license arrangements without a written exception. Do not read one software example as overriding those other exclusions. Identify the actual seller, license type and whether the terms were accepted before asking for a return.
For a bundled computer, leave the included software and documentation with the return as instructed, and remove only your personal information and unrelated media. A license activation or agreement acceptance can change eligibility even when no physical package has been opened. Ask Dell about the exact product before assuming an unused download key can be refunded.
What happens to a Dell refund if you keep a free gift or promotional card?
Dell can reduce a bundle or promotional refund by the value of a discount, promotional product or redeemed card. Its examples include returning a computer while keeping the free printer, or returning a monitor after spending the associated gift card.
A line advertised as free is therefore not necessarily free to keep after undoing the qualifying purchase. Compare the original invoice, promotional terms and items included in the CRA before deciding which pieces to send back. A partial return can be worth less than the standalone component price because of bundled or promotional pricing.
For illustration, keeping an accessory from a discounted package can reduce the refund for the main device; the actual deduction depends on the offer, not an invented standard charge. Ask the order-support team to explain the proposed breakdown while you still have the associated items and records. Promotional deductions are separate from any applicable restocking or shipping charge.
Will Dell restore Rewards you used to pay for a returned product?
Dell says Rewards used toward a returned product are credited back to the Dell Rewards account when the return is completed. The restored reward keeps its original expiration date rather than receiving a fresh validity period merely because the purchase was returned.
Check the date before planning to use the replacement balance on another order. Restoring an old reward and receiving an original-payment refund for the cash portion are different parts of the transaction. A credit in one place does not prove the other part has already finished.
Keep the original purchase record showing how much Rewards value was applied, the CRA and the completed return notice. If the reward portion looks missing or unusable, compare the original expiration date and account history before contacting support. Do not assume a promotional gift card and Dell Rewards are the same benefit: the return policy describes separate rules for promotional items and the loyalty balance.
What happens to Dell Rewards earned on a purchase you return?
If earned Rewards have not been spent, Dell removes them from the balance when the qualifying product is returned. If some or all of those earned Rewards were already used, their value is deducted from your Rewards balance, which can become negative.
That is different from restoring Rewards you used as payment on the returned item. One rule reverses a benefit earned from a purchase you no longer keep; the other restores eligible tender applied to that purchase. Check both sides of the account history if your return involved Rewards.
As an illustration, spending rewards earned from a laptop before returning it can leave a negative loyalty balance if there is not enough remaining value to cover the reversal. The actual adjustment follows your account transactions. Keep the original reward award, later redemption and return notice together so Dell can trace why the balance changed.
How long does a Dell refund take, and how can you track it?
Dell’s refund FAQ says to allow 10 to 15 business days from receipt of the returned order for the money to be credited to the original payment method. That estimate begins when Dell receives the item, not when you submit the initial request or print a label.
Use Return Status in the order’s Action Menu to follow progress. Keep the carrier delivery scan and CRA confirmation so you can separate travel time from Dell’s receipt and validation. An approved request is not yet a completed refund.
If the stated period passes, enter the order number and contact Customer Support through the Action Menu. Compare the expected net credit with original shipping, a permitted restocking fee, bundle adjustments and Rewards treatment before assuming the difference is a bank error. Dell refunds the actual price paid for the eligible return, not a later list price or the hypothetical cost of buying the same model again.
Can you return an opened Dell computer, and what must be included?
The published requirement is as-new condition, original packaging, and all media, documentation and other items supplied with the shipment. The policy does not describe the eligible computer route as an unopened-only rule, but that does not authorize damage, missing components or every modified configuration.
Gather the charger, included cables, manuals and any other supplied pieces before packing. A separately owned drive or adapter should not be included merely because you used it with the computer. The CRA should identify the actual product being returned.
Keep the original product packaging inside suitable shipping protection and follow the label instructions. Missing items and promotional pieces can affect the credit independently of the physical condition of the main computer. If the equipment cannot be restored to its required state because of a fault, explain that before shipping rather than making an undocumented alteration to try to make it look new.
How should you prepare data and the operating system for a Dell return?
Back up information you want to keep, then delete stored data and remove confidential, proprietary and personal material. Dell also tells customers to remove their own flash drives, discs, PC cards and attached devices that were not part of the original shipment. The company is not responsible for information or unrelated removable items left behind.
Do not casually change the factory software configuration while preparing the return. Dell warns that removing the factory-installed operating system to run an unsupported alternative can make a system ineligible for a refund and can create support issues. That is separate from safely removing your personal files.
Use the instructions appropriate to the device and explain a reset problem to support if the computer is defective. Preserve the service tag and order records before erasing anything. Data preparation protects your information, while the original-condition and complete-packaging requirements still determine the physical return’s eligibility.
Can Dell accept a laptop bought elsewhere or a return from another country?
For a Dell-branded product bought from another seller, start with that seller’s return policy. The direct Dell policy does not automatically apply to a marketplace, electronics-store or other reseller purchase merely because the hardware carries Dell’s name.
For an eligible direct purchase, all returns must be made in the same country in which the purchase was made. Moving or traveling does not create a promise that another country’s Dell operation can accept and refund the transaction. Obtain instructions through the original order rather than shipping internationally to a guessed address.
Dell’s official order page is the contact route for ordinary returns and refund follow-up. Technical support uses the service tag when a fault needs diagnosis or a replacement. Have the invoice, order number, purchase classification and any CRA ready so support can distinguish a retail return, business agreement and warranty claim.
