Best Buy
return policy.

The ordinary window is short, paid memberships can extend it, and phones and restocking-fee products follow stricter rules.

Policy checked September 23, 2026 Official source ↗

The short answer

Most Best Buy purchases can be returned within 15 days after you receive the product. Paid My Best Buy Plus and Total members get 60 days on most Best Buy-sold merchandise, but not Marketplace products. Activatable devices such as phones remain capped at 14 days for every tier, and opened products in specified categories can carry a $45 or 15% restocking fee.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Best Buy’s standard return policy?

Best Buy gives standard customers 15 days from the day they receive the product to return or exchange most eligible merchandise. The policy applies to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished, and pre-owned products sold by Best Buy. Items must be in like-new condition.

The policy also covers Best Buy Outlet, Pacific Sales, Magnolia Design Center, Best Buy Education, and Best Buy Business purchases, subject to their location and channel rules. Products purchased directly from a vendor operating inside a store follow that vendor’s policy instead.

Fifteen days is not universal. Paid membership tiers can extend most Best Buy-sold purchases to 60 days, while activatable devices use 14 days for everyone. Marketplace merchandise, selected extended categories, holiday decorations, services, and non-returnable products have separate rules.

How long do My Best Buy Plus and Total members get?

Paid My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members receive a 60-day return and exchange window on most eligible products sold by Best Buy. A free My Best Buy account is not the same benefit. The window begins when the product is received.

The extension does not apply to Marketplace products or override category-specific deadlines. Activatable devices remain at 14 days for every customer, Verizon activatable devices use 30 days, and holiday decorations use 15 days. Non-returnable merchandise stays non-returnable.

Best Buy’s published policy does not clearly say whether membership must already be active when the purchase is made or what happens if membership is canceled during the extended period. Confirm the deadline shown in the order instead of assuming a later membership purchase changes it.

Which Best Buy products have a restocking fee?

An opened activatable device—such as an eligible phone, cellular tablet, mobile hotspot, or cellular wearable—can carry a $45 restocking fee. Prepaid phones are excluded from that fee. Best Buy says the fee is not charged when the product remains unopened.

A separate 15% restocking fee applies to specified opened products, including drones, digital cameras, camera lenses, camcorders and action cameras, projectors and screens, golf launch monitors, premium or mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, recovery systems, premium cold tubs and saunas, and special-order products.

Best Buy waives these restocking fees for purchases made in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, and South Carolina, and wherever else prohibited by law. The fee may be taxed in selected states. Check the category before opening expensive equipment because returning it within the deadline does not automatically eliminate the deduction.

What is Best Buy’s phone and activatable-device return policy?

Activatable devices have a 14-day return period for standard shoppers and paid members alike. The category includes cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots, and cellular wearables. Verizon devices capable of activation are listed separately with a 30-day period.

An opened qualifying device can incur the $45 restocking fee. Returning the hardware does not automatically cancel wireless service. Tell the store associate that service must be canceled, or contact Best Buy Mobile at 1-877-702-2211 for mail-return instructions. The customer remains responsible for carrier charges and the carrier’s cancellation rules.

Before returning a connected product, erase personal data and unlink it from cloud accounts and other devices. Best Buy says it or the Marketplace seller may refuse a connected device that is still linked. Return the charger, original battery, and included accessories.

Can you return open-box, refurbished, or clearance products?

Yes. Best Buy says its ordinary return periods apply to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished, and pre-owned products. That generally means 15 days for a standard customer or 60 days for a paid Plus or Total member when the item was sold by Best Buy and no shorter category rule applies.

The item still must be in like-new condition. Best Buy can deny merchandise that is damaged, unsanitary, dented, scratched, or missing major contents. Apparel must remain unworn and unlaundered with its original tags. A return missing accessories may be denied or accepted with a nonrefundable deduction.

Open-box, refurbished, clearance, and pre-owned merchandise does not receive Best Buy’s price-adjustment benefit. Return eligibility and price protection are separate policies.

How do TV, laptop, and appliance returns work at Best Buy?

A laptop or ordinary television sold by Best Buy generally follows the 15-day standard or 60-day paid-member window. Back up and erase laptop data, unlink cloud accounts, and return all accessories. Televisions larger than 50 inches cannot use Best Buy’s ordinary mail-return label; call for another return method.

Inspect a major appliance or truck-delivered product before accepting it and refuse delivery if it is damaged. After acceptance, contact 1-888-BEST BUY immediately about damage or defects—Best Buy specifically says not to call the store. Its policy does not publish a separate numeric appliance-reporting deadline, so do not wait merely because the general return window remains open.

Major appliances, televisions over 50 inches, kegerators, and SodaStream makers cannot be returned through ordinary mail. Some heavy items may need to go directly to the manufacturer. Confirm pickup, packaging, and any fee before moving the product.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return something to Best Buy without a receipt?

Best Buy recommends bringing the packing slip or receipt and the original payment card. If it cannot verify proof of purchase, it may ask for an email address, issue store credit, or deny or limit the return. Sales tax and fees are not reimbursed on an approved no-proof return.

The published policy does not state that government identification is universally required, so do not treat that as a fixed rule. First try to recover the order through your Best Buy account, confirmation email, payment card, or order number.

A no-receipt return does not bypass a product deadline, condition requirement, restocking fee, or non-returnable classification. Approval and value can differ from a fully documented return.

Which products cannot be returned to Best Buy?

Best Buy lists custom and personalized orders, Final Sale merchandise, most non-subscription digital content, digital gaming, codes and prepaid cards, replacement key fobs, memberships, trading cards, products with battery capacity of at least 300 watt-hours, golf carts, utility terrain vehicles, electric bikes, electric mopeds, and plumbing items as non-returnable once purchased. Microsoft Office is a stated digital exception with a 30-day return period.

Other products become non-returnable after opening. These include products that interact with bodily fluids, SIM kits, LEGO, completed services, delivered home standby or whole-home backup products, Marketplace entertainment merchandise, and consumables such as batteries, oils, fuel, filters, cleaning agents, supplements, health test kits, ink, and 3D-printer filament.

Opened software, movies, music, games, books, guides, and sheet music sold by Best Buy can generally be exchanged only for the identical item during the applicable window. Opened versions sold by Marketplace sellers are non-returnable.

09 / THE DETAILS

Can you return a BestBuy.com purchase to a store or by mail?

Most eligible products sold by Best Buy can be returned to any Best Buy store whether purchased online or in person. Bring the item, packing slip or receipt, and original payment card. Pacific Sales merchandise must go to an eligible Pacific Sales location, and Magnolia or Premium Design Center products require a Best Buy store with the applicable department.

For an eligible mail return, sign in and generate a free prepaid FedEx label. Hand the package to an authorized location during the return period; creating a label without shipping the item does not complete the return. Best Buy will not accept a return shipped from outside the United States.

Mail restrictions apply to major appliances, TVs over 50 inches, kegerators, SodaStream products, selected battery products, and some Best Buy Business orders. Call before mailing anything unusually large, powered, or regulated.

10 / THE DETAILS

How do Best Buy Marketplace returns work?

Best Buy Marketplace products generally follow the standard 15-day framework unless a product-specific rule says otherwise. The 60-day Plus and Total member extension does not apply. Activatable devices retain the 14-day rule, and Marketplace merchandise remains subject to the non-returnable and condition lists.

Many non-truck Marketplace products can be returned at a Best Buy store. Best Buy inspects and refunds the item, then sends it back to the seller. Customers can also use the free prepaid label generated through their account. Marketplace major appliances and truck-delivered items require contacting the seller through the account to arrange front-door pickup.

Opened Marketplace entertainment products are non-returnable. For damaged, defective, or incorrect Marketplace shipments, notify the seller through the account and use the provided prepaid label during the return period.

11 / THE DETAILS

How long does a Best Buy refund take?

Best Buy normally refunds the original payment method, with stated exceptions. A mailed return is processed about 7–10 business days after Best Buy receives it, and the financial institution may require up to another 10 days to post the credit. An in-store transaction avoids shipping and inspection transit but the bank can still take time.

Large cash and cash-equivalent returns can be refunded by check instead of immediately: cash purchases over $800, check purchases over $250, and debit purchases over $250 when the card lacks a major credit-card logo. Best Buy says the check is mailed within 10 business days.

A purchase made fully or partly with a Best Buy Gift Card returns to a new gift card or electronic gift card. Missing accessories, broken bundle qualifications, and restocking fees can reduce the refund.

How do Best Buy gift returns and exchanges work?

An eligible gift returned to a store normally gives the recipient store credit for the purchase price. A gift returned by mail is credited to the original purchaser, who receives an email notification. Marketplace gift returns also credit the purchaser.

Bring the gift receipt or packing slip if available. The policy does not clearly say whose membership tier determines the return window for a gift, so use the deadline attached to the order rather than assuming the recipient’s membership extends it.

For Best Buy-sold merchandise, an exchange for the same item may be available when the product is otherwise eligible. Marketplace gift returns should be treated as returns rather than assuming an exchange is offered.

13 / THE DETAILS

Does Best Buy refund the difference after a price drop?

If Best Buy lowers its own price on an eligible new product during the return and exchange period, it will match the lower price on request. The benefit does not apply to Marketplace, clearance, refurbished, or open-box products. Online customers can request it through chat or phone; store customers can use customer service.

For an eligible product scheduled for delivery, a Best Buy price drop before the scheduled delivery date can receive 100% of the difference, including tax, by calling 1-888-BEST BUY. That request is not handled in a store or by email.

The policy refers to the applicable return and exchange period but does not expressly confirm that paid members receive the full 60 days for price adjustments. Treat the order’s displayed eligibility as controlling. Competitor price matching is generally available only at the time of sale, not as a later return remedy.

Has Best Buy published its 2026 holiday return policy?

Best Buy had not published a 2026 holiday-return extension on its official holiday page when this guide was checked. The page still displayed the prior 2025–26 season, so dates circulating elsewhere should not be treated as current.

Use the ordinary 15-, 60-, or category-specific deadline until Best Buy publishes new seasonal terms. Even when an extension exists, activatable devices, AppleCare+ plans, holiday products, restocking fees, and non-returnable categories can remain excluded or restricted.

What if a Best Buy order arrives damaged, defective, or incorrect?

Report a damaged, defective, or incorrect Best Buy shipment during the applicable 15- or 60-day return period. Best Buy can arrange a replacement and directs customers to call for mail instructions when needed. Preserve the product, packaging, serial number, shipping label, and photographs.

Marketplace customers should notify the seller through their Best Buy account and return the item using the prepaid label during the 15-day period. For a major appliance or truck delivery, inspect before acceptance; after acceptance, call 1-888-BEST BUY immediately rather than contacting the store.

A protection plan or AppleCare+ benefit is separate from the merchandise return window. Best Buy Total may include eligible protection while membership remains active, but that does not give phones or other restricted products a longer return period.
