Eligible U.S. Express online orders can be returned within 30 days of delivery with valid purchase proof, unworn and unwashed. Clearance and .97-ending items are final sale. Mainline stores and Factory Outlets have separate routes; the prepaid UPS label generally costs $6.99.
How to start a return
In a store
- Find an Express retail store for a mainline purchase, or a Factory Outlet for an outlet purchase.
- For an eligible web order, start online and choose Visit a Store.
- Bring the items and valid purchase proof; retain the return receipt.
Online or by mail
- Enter the order number and billing ZIP code in the official portal.
- Select eligible items, reasons and the UPS route; review the $6.99 deduction.
- Pack, seal and label the parcel before drop-off; save tracking.
What is the Express return policy for U.S. purchases?
Eligible Express purchases have a 30-day return window, and online orders count from delivery. You need a valid receipt, invoice, order confirmation or a purchase Express can confirm in its system. Ordinary merchandise must be in original condition, unwashed and unworn. Clearance and several special categories have tighter restrictions.
The purchase channel also matters. An express.com order shipped to a U.S. address can generally go back by mail or to an Express retail store. A purchase from an Express Factory Outlet goes back to a Factory Outlet. Mixing those channels is a common reason a seemingly eligible return gets turned away.
This guide covers current U.S. rules, including orders subject to the policy introduced August 1, 2025. Use the table to choose a route before starting a return or paying for shipping. International orders have separate instructions.
| Situation | Key rule | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. express.com order | 30 days from delivery | Express retail store or eligible mail return |
| Express / Express Men store purchase | Valid receipt and eligible condition | Return to a U.S. mainline store |
| Factory Outlet store purchase | Separate outlet route | Return to a U.S. Factory Outlet |
| Clearance or .97-ending item | Final sale | Do not send to the warehouse |
Does Express give you 30 or 60 days to return?
The current U.S. online policy gives 30 days from delivery, not 60 days from purchase. Express’s international section still describes a 60-day window for orders shipped outside the U.S. That separate rule can make search results confusing.
For a U.S. web order, save the delivery confirmation and the order number together. If a package arrived several days after checkout, use its delivery date when assessing the online deadline. Express’s general page describes the U.S. window as delivery-based but does not separately explain a delivery clock for merchandise carried out of a store. For a store purchase, work from the receipt date and ask the store about any uncertainty.
Do not wait until the last day to create a label. The retailer warns that carrier delays can cause a return to arrive outside the window. Leave time for the trip and processing route you choose.
Can you return to Express without a receipt?
Express does not offer a no-proof refund, store credit or courtesy exchange. Its policy requires a receipt, invoice or order confirmation, or a purchase it can confirm in its system. Losing the paper slip does not necessarily mean losing every possible transaction record.
Search your email for the order confirmation, look for the order number and check any account history you used at checkout. For a store purchase, ask whether Express can confirm the original transaction before making a special trip. Do not assume a bank charge alone contains enough detail to prove which item was purchased.
If the retailer cannot validate the purchase, the published rule says it will not issue a refund, credit or exchange. Keep proof until the return is fully resolved. An item still having tags is useful for condition review, but tags do not replace evidence of purchase.
Can you return worn clothing or washed Express items?
Ordinary clothing must be unwashed, unworn and in its original condition. Trying on a garment to assess fit is different from wearing it to work, laundering it or altering it. Preserve the product as you received it while deciding whether to keep it.
Check the item in good light for deodorant marks, makeup, stains and damage. Keep its original packaging and any included accessories. Explain the actual condition if something arrived with a problem; Express distinguishes defective merchandise from the standard unworn requirement.
For example, a blazer that does not fit after an indoor try-on is a different case from one worn to an event and cleaned afterward. A defective seam deserves a specific explanation and photographs rather than an ordinary changed-mind reason. The policy does not promise that every reported defect will be accepted without inspection.
Are Express clearance items and .97 prices final sale?
Yes. Items marked Clearance or priced with a .97 ending are not returnable. Express also states that clearance items cannot be exchanged and do not qualify for price adjustments or price matches. A low price alone is not the only test; check both the clearance designation and the price ending.
Review the product page and order details before treating a discounted purchase as returnable. An ordinary promotion should not automatically be confused with Clearance, but a final-sale designation should not be ignored because the garment is unworn.
There is an unusually serious mail-return consequence: Express says clearance or otherwise ineligible products sent directly to its warehouse will be disposed of and will not be sent back. If you believe a final-sale item arrived defective or incorrect, contact support before shipping. Do not send it speculatively and hope the warehouse makes an exception.
Can you return an Express online order in a store?
Yes, eligible U.S. express.com orders can be returned at Express retail stores in the U.S. Express says to start the return online, select Visit a Store, and bring the items. A shipping box is not necessary for this store route.
Bring the order confirmation or another valid purchase record. Check that the location is a mainline Express store rather than an Express Factory Outlet. The outlet cannot accept a regular express.com return, even if the products look similar or both stores share the Express name.
This can be the simplest route when a retail location is nearby because it avoids the $6.99 prepaid-label deduction. Keep the counter receipt and check the payment account afterward. The page describes a fast, free store refund, but your bank’s posting time can still differ from the moment the return is accepted.
What is the Express Factory Outlet return policy?
Factory Outlet in-store purchases must go back to an Express Factory Outlet in the U.S. Mainline Express and Express Men stores do not accept those returns, and the regular mail-return route does not accept them either.
The reverse restriction also applies: Factory Outlet stores cannot accept merchandise purchased at mainline Express or Express Men stores or at express.com. Check the store name on the receipt before deciding where to go. A nearby outlet is not interchangeable with a nearby mainline store.
For example, someone who purchased an outfit at an outlet while traveling should locate another U.S. Factory Outlet rather than send it to the Walton warehouse. Carry the valid receipt and preserve the item’s original condition. Ask that outlet about a particular item’s deadline or exclusions instead of applying the web-order delivery calculation to an outlet counter purchase.
How do you start an Express return online?
Use the official Express return portal linked from its policy. Enter the order number and billing ZIP code, select the products and their return reasons, repeat for additional items, then review and submit the selections.
Choose the route deliberately. The page offers a store visit, UPS shipping and an easy drop-off option. A return request is a record of what you intend to send; it is not confirmation that Express has inspected and accepted the merchandise.
Check item quantities and the displayed fee before finalizing. If your order contains both eligible clothing and final-sale clearance, exclude the final-sale merchandise unless support has expressly given different instructions for a problem. Save the confirmation email because it contains useful tracking information. For a gift, obtain the necessary order details rather than entering guesses into the portal.
How much does Express return shipping cost?
Express deducts $6.99 when you use its prepaid UPS return label. The policy says certain items may be exempt, so the actual return summary matters. Returning an eligible web order to an appropriate Express retail store is the published free option.
For an illustrative $80 merchandise refund, one $6.99 deduction leaves $73.01 before any tax allocation or other order-specific adjustments. This example explains the label charge; it does not establish eligibility or the final refund for your transaction.
Express does not refund original shipping and handling fees under the ordinary policy. Keep those charges separate from the return-label deduction. If you choose your own carrier, you pay that carrier in advance. Compare the real postage and tracking cost with the label option, and ask support about a defective or incorrect item before paying an avoidable shipping charge.
Is Express easy drop-off box-free or label-free?
The UPS Access Point route requires a packed, sealed and labeled parcel. Express specifically says Access Point associates do not provide packing services. The phrase easy drop-off does not mean you can arrive with loose garments and expect the location to supply a box.
Start the return and choose Easy Drop-Off Near Me. Print the label, pack the eligible products securely, remove or cover old shipping information, and attach the new label before visiting the location. Express says that if you cannot print, you can bring the email to a UPS Store for assistance.
Keep the carrier acceptance receipt and tracking number. Check opening hours for the selected site. A UPS Access Point can be inside another business; its staff and hours differ from a dedicated UPS Store. Label creation by itself is not proof that the package was handed over.
Where do you mail an Express return?
For eligible direct online U.S. returns using your own prepaid carrier, the published address is EXPRESS – Returns, 30 Transport Drive, Walton, KY 41094. Follow the current portal or support instructions for your actual parcel rather than treating this address as a destination for every Express-branded item.
Express explicitly excludes in-store and Marketplace purchases from this warehouse address. Mainline store purchases must go back to a qualifying store, while Factory Outlet purchases have their own outlet route. A marketplace transaction needs its applicable seller or order instructions.
Include the information needed to connect the merchandise with your order and retain tracking. Express says it is not responsible for carrier errors, lost packages or delays that cause items to arrive outside the return window. Using the correct address does not override those eligibility and timing requirements.
How do Express exchanges work for a different size?
Express does not currently offer online exchanges. The online alternative is to return the eligible original item and place a new order for the preferred size, color or style. Its store-return section says associates can help complete an eligible return or exchange in person.
If you buy a replacement immediately, the new charge may happen before the original refund appears. Check stock, price and current promotions first. The original purchase price does not automatically guarantee the same price on a separate replacement order.
A store exchange still requires valid proof, eligible merchandise and the correct mainline or outlet location. Clearance remains final sale. For example, changing an unworn full-price shirt from medium to large is a different request from exchanging a clearance shirt simply because it fits poorly. Confirm the proposed transaction at the counter before handing over the original item.
How long does an Express refund take?
For mailed returns, Express says it issues the refund after receiving the merchandise and sends an email when the return is processed. The refund may take up to 10 business days to appear in your account, and the financial institution may take longer.
Separate three stages: shipping back, retailer processing and payment posting. The date you printed a label does not begin a guaranteed bank-credit countdown. Use the tracking number to establish carrier delivery, then look for the processing email.
If the package was delivered but you have no refund confirmation, contact Express with the order number, returned-item list and tracking. If Express has confirmed the refund but the credit is absent, check the payment account and ask which date and amount were refunded. Keep all evidence until the credit actually appears.
How are Express gift-card purchases refunded?
An accepted return paid with an Express gift card is refunded by electronic gift card. Express says it sends that card to the email address provided on the order, usually within 48 hours. That is payment-specific guidance, not a promise of a cash refund.
Check the order email, including spam or promotions folders, after processing. If the purchase used more than one payment source, ask how the refund is allocated; the short gift-card statement does not explain every split-payment situation.
A gift recipient should also confirm where the refund will go before returning a present. Do not assume the email automatically changes to the person bringing back the item. Preserve the order details and contact support if you need help with the destination. The ordinary eligibility, deadline and final-sale rules still apply to a gift-card-funded purchase.
Can you return Express swimwear, fragrance and face coverings?
Face coverings are nonreturnable. Express also says some categories, including fragrance and swimwear, may be ineligible unless they remain in original condition. These items should be assessed individually rather than treated like any unworn shirt.
Keep packaging, seals and all included parts intact while deciding. The published wording does not create a general permission to open and use fragrance or remove protective elements from swimwear, then return it because you changed your mind.
If an item arrived damaged or incorrect, contact Express before mailing it and describe the specific problem. Ask which route is approved and whether photographs are needed. Do not interpret the ordinary defective-merchandise exception as advance approval for every hygiene-related category. Also check whether the item was marked Clearance or priced with a .97 ending, because that is a separate final-sale restriction.
Can a closing Express store accept returns?
Express says closing stores have final-sale rules and cannot accept returns or exchanges. Its closing-store notice also excludes price adjustments and price matches. A location being open for liquidation does not mean it provides the ordinary return service.
Check the current store information before traveling, particularly if the receipt came from a location that is now closing. For an eligible earlier purchase, ask support which operating location can review it. The closing-store notice is not permission to mail an in-store purchase to the online warehouse.
The notice also says closing locations cannot accept gift cards, store credits, Insider Rewards or Express Cash and do not offer additional discounts or promotional offers. Those checkout limitations matter if you intend to purchase a replacement during the same visit. Confirm the destination and transaction before making the trip.
What if your Express return is late or gets declined?
The standard U.S. policy does not promise a routine extension beyond 30 days. Contact Express promptly if delivery dates are disputed or a defect needs review. Explain the actual problem and provide documentation; an unanswered request or a newly printed label should not be treated as an approved extension.
Express reserves the right to limit or decline returns and exchanges when it detects policy-abuse patterns. Valid purchase proof and an item’s apparent condition do not guarantee acceptance if another published restriction applies.
For a decline, ask which rule was decisive: final sale, missing proof, wrong store channel, item condition or timing. That lets you address a genuine record error without repeatedly trying the same rejected route. Do not resend ineligible merchandise to the warehouse, where the policy says it can be disposed of instead of returned.
What should you check before returning an Express purchase?
Start with four questions: Where was it bought, when did it arrive, is it returnable, and can you prove the purchase? Those answers determine whether a store visit, UPS parcel or support request is appropriate.
Then review the refund outcome. A store route may avoid the $6.99 label deduction; a gift-card payment returns as an electronic gift card; original shipping and handling are not ordinarily refunded. For a size change, decide whether an in-store exchange or a separate replacement order best fits your timing.
Pack only approved merchandise, save the order confirmation and keep any carrier or store receipt. Check the official policy again if your transaction has unusual conditions or an older purchase date. Resolve missing proof, clearance status and location restrictions before surrendering the item. A few minutes spent choosing the correct route can prevent a wasted trip or a rejected parcel.
