Dollar General Return Policy: 90-Day Store Refunds vs 30-Day Shipped Returns

Check Dollar General’s 90-day store and 30-day shipped return rules, missing receipts, packaging, delivery refunds, exclusions and postage costs.

By October 14, 2026

The short answer

Bought it in a Dollar General store? You generally have 90 days from purchase for a refund with the receipt and original packaging. Without a receipt, the stated options are an equal-value exchange or gift card. Shipped unused items have 30 days from purchase and need Customer Care authorization; they cannot go back to a store. Delivery orders use separate support routes.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Check the purchase date, product restrictions and original packaging.
  2. Take store-bought merchandise and the register or digital receipt to the purchasing store.
  3. Without a receipt, ask about an equal-value exchange or gift card.

Online or by mail

  1. For shipped orders, contact Customer Care for an address and authorization number.
  2. Pack the unused eligible item, accessories and order paperwork; prepay postage.
  3. For myDG Delivery problems, use Order Help or DG support; DoorDash orders use DoorDash support.

01 / THE DETAILS

How long do you have to return something to Dollar General?

Dollar General gives you 90 days from purchase for an ordinary store refund with a register or digital receipt and the original packaging. If you bought it at the register, this is your starting point.

The catch is that Dollar General has several return systems. Store shopping, shipped website orders and delivery orders follow different rules. A box shipped from DollarGeneral.com has a 30-day window from purchase, so the familiar 90-day headline can be misleading if you shop online.

There are product exceptions, too. Selected seasonal goods are identical-item exchanges only, opened discs and software have an identical-title rule, and tobacco is excluded. For a household item bought in-store, the question is usually straightforward: is it within 90 days, do you have the receipt and packaging, and does its category allow a refund? The table below helps you find the right starting point.

Can you return to Dollar General without a receipt?

Without a receipt, Dollar General lists two options: merchandise of equal value or a gift card of equal value. Cash back is not the published no-receipt option.

That can still solve the problem if you want a replacement or regularly shop there. It is less useful if you need the money back on your card, which is why finding a digital receipt is worth a quick search first. The store policy accepts digital receipts as well as paper ones.

A bank charge may jog your memory, but it does not identify every item in the basket, and Dollar General does not promise universal card-based receipt recovery. Ask the purchasing store how it will value the item before choosing replacements. Product restrictions still matter: a missing receipt does not open up a return for tobacco, and alcohol requires the actual receipt.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an item to any Dollar General store?

Take a store purchase back to the Dollar General where you bought it. The retailer’s shipped-return instructions say store-bought merchandise must go back to that store. They also say shipped merchandise cannot be returned to a retail location.

This is an easy detail to miss when several branches are nearby. The shop closest to home may be convenient, but the store address on your receipt is the one to use. Alcohol returns specifically require the original purchasing store as well.

Bought something while traveling? Customer Care is the useful next step if another trip there is impractical. Give them the purchase details and ask what they can arrange for that transaction. The online warehouse process serves shipped orders; it is not a ready-made alternative for a register purchase. Knowing that before leaving home can save you a fruitless visit.

04 / THE DETAILS

What should you bring for a Dollar General store return?

For a store return, the essentials are the item, its original packaging and the register or digital receipt. Keep the included pieces together so the store can assess the complete purchase.

You do not need a lengthy explanation. “This was damaged when I opened it” or “I bought the wrong item” gives the associate a clear starting point. The reason matters most when a product has a narrower exchange rule, such as opened media or a defective propane cylinder.

If your receipt is digital, have the actual receipt open on your phone. A screenshot of a bank transaction is a different record. With several purchases on one receipt, pointing out the item and purchase date helps the associate find it. Before the transaction ends, clarify whether you are receiving a refund, an identical-item exchange or a gift card, since those outcomes are not interchangeable.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can you return opened or used merchandise?

Shipped returns must be unused. For store purchases, Dollar General requires original packaging for a receipted refund and separately restricts opened media. The store article does not offer an unlimited trial of everything it sells.

Opening a box to discover a broken item is different from using a product for weeks and deciding you dislike it. For an opened store purchase, the purchasing store can review the condition and the relevant category rule. There is no blanket “opened means accepted” promise to rely on.

With a shipped order, explain a defect or wrong-item problem when requesting authorization. That detail can affect postage reimbursement. For example, an unused item you simply no longer want follows the ordinary paid-postage route; a manufacturing defect or shipping error qualifies for the policy’s return-shipping reimbursement. Describe what actually happened so the right rule applies.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return CDs, DVDs or software after opening them?

Opened CDs, DVDs and software can be exchanged for an identical title under the store policy. The available remedy is another copy of the same title, rather than another film, different software or an ordinary refund.

That distinction makes sense to sort out before you browse for a replacement. An opened DVD you no longer want and a faulty copy you want replaced may have different reasons behind the request, but the published opened-media provision still specifies an identical title.

The item, packaging and receipt help the associate identify the exact copy and purchase. If the title is out of stock, the store will need to explain how it can handle that situation; the policy does not set out an automatic cash alternative. This rule is specific to the listed media. It should not be stretched into a general rule for every electronic item on the shelf.

07 / THE DETAILS

Are seasonal items, tobacco and propane returnable?

Selected seasonal goods are identical-item exchanges only. Tobacco has no customer refund or exchange. Propane cylinders are nonrefundable, with an exchange available for a defective cylinder. A receipt does not override those restrictions.

The seasonal wording is selective, rather than a list covering every decoration or holiday product. For a particular purchase, the store can identify whether it falls into that restricted group. That is useful to know before buying several seasonal items with the intention of returning the extras later.

Propane has an especially clear distinction: a cylinder you no longer want is not the same as a defective one. Call the store about a defect before moving the cylinder so you can follow its handling instructions. For tobacco, neither the general 90-day window nor the no-receipt gift-card option creates an ordinary return route. These are category rules, not just paperwork requirements.

08 / THE DETAILS

Can you return alcohol or items purchased with SNAP benefits?

Alcohol requires a receipt and can only be refunded at the original purchasing store. Alcohol exchanges are not allowed. The store address on the receipt is therefore as important as the date.

For products paid for with EBT/SNAP benefits, Dollar General says returns must follow USDA requirements. Tell the associate how you paid so the transaction can be handled correctly. The general no-receipt wording is not enough to establish a cash or unrestricted gift-card refund for a SNAP purchase.

A mixed-payment basket can make this less obvious. If you used more than one payment method, the full receipt helps staff identify the item and the relevant payment. For a damaged food product, explain the problem with that particular item rather than treating every purchase on the receipt as one return. The retailer’s policy gives the route; the transaction details determine how staff apply it.

09 / THE DETAILS

How do you return a shipped DollarGeneral.com order?

A shipped DollarGeneral.com return starts with Customer Care. You need its return address and authorization number before mailing the item. Eligible merchandise must be unused and within 30 days from purchase.

Because the clock starts at purchase, delivery time uses part of the window. A package that arrives a week after ordering does not come with a fresh 30 days. It is worth deciding promptly whether an eligible item is right for you.

Pack all parts, accessories and paperwork, preferably in the original product packaging. Include the return form or bottom portion of the packing slip, along with the order number, billing name and address. Use the authorized destination and cover old shipping labels. You must prepay postage; Dollar General does not accept cash-on-delivery or third-party billing. Tracking is your record of the parcel reaching the return facility.

10 / THE DETAILS

Are Dollar General online returns free?

An ordinary shipped return costs you the postage, and the original delivery charge is nonrefundable. Dollar General reimburses return shipping for a manufacturing defect or shipping error.

For a low-priced purchase, that can change whether a change-of-mind return is worthwhile. As an illustration, paying $8 to return a $10 item leaves very little of the merchandise refund, before considering any delivery charge you already paid. Compare the actual postage quote with the amount recoverable on your order.

A defective item or wrong shipment deserves a different conversation with Customer Care. Explain the issue when asking for authorization and find out how to submit the postage expense. Reimbursement means recovering a cost you paid; it does not necessarily mean receiving a prepaid label. The shipping receipt is useful here because it records the expense separately from the parcel’s tracking history.

11 / THE DETAILS

Which shipped items cannot be returned?

Food and hazardous-material items are excluded from the shipped-return policy. The ordinary mail route also requires unused merchandise. These limits are separate from the rules for purchases made in a store.

If an excluded product arrives damaged or incorrect, that does not make an ordinary warehouse return the right solution. Customer Care can review the order problem and explain the appropriate resolution. Give them the item description and what went wrong so they can distinguish a delivery issue from simply changing your mind.

This is especially relevant to a mixed order: an eligible household item and an excluded food item do not necessarily share a return route just because they arrived in one box. Obtain instructions for the affected products before buying postage. For a hazardous item, follow the retailer’s handling guidance rather than using an address from an earlier, unrelated return.

12 / THE DETAILS

How long does a Dollar General online refund take?

Dollar General says a shipped-order refund should arrive within 30 days after it receives the return. Count from warehouse receipt, rather than the day you request authorization or drop the parcel off.

The stated refund covers the item price and applicable sales tax. It can go to the original payment form or a Dollar General gift card. Original delivery costs remain excluded; return postage is reimbursed for the specified manufacturing-defect or shipping-error cases.

If the wait seems long, separate the two stages. Tracking tells you whether the package reached Dollar General. Customer Care can tell you whether the refund was processed and which form it took. A gift card will not appear as a credit on your bank statement. For a card credit already issued, your payment provider can help with posting. The authorization and delivery confirmation give you a clear timeline for that conversation.

13 / THE DETAILS

How do digital receipts help with a return?

A digital receipt counts under Dollar General’s receipted store-return policy. What matters is the purchase record identifying the item, rather than whether it is on paper or a screen.

For myDG Delivery, the current terms identify the order-complete email as the digital receipt. Search the email address used at checkout if you need that record for support. It connects the product, date and order to the right transaction.

The receipt format does not change the return route. A digital record for a shipped purchase still leads to Customer Care authorization and a mailed return. A DoorDash order goes through DoorDash support. For a store purchase, a valid digital receipt can save you from the no-receipt exchange or gift-card route. The useful distinction is proof of purchase versus no proof, with the ordering service determining where you take the problem.

14 / THE DETAILS

How do you request a myDG Delivery refund?

For myDG Delivery, start with Order Help or call Dollar General support at 800-678-9258. Refund eligibility depends on the issue and how long ago the delivery arrived.

The self-service option has two limits: the total request must be $5 or less, and it must involve no more than two items from one order. A $4 request covering three items exceeds the item limit. A two-item request totaling $6 exceeds the dollar limit. Both tests have to fit.

A larger problem goes to the support team for review. Describe which items are missing, incorrect or damaged, rather than asking for a whole-order refund without identifying the issue. Support decides the appropriate resolution and whether an item needs to be returned. The order number and a clear account of the problem are more useful than trying the same self-service request repeatedly.

15 / THE DETAILS

What if the order came through DoorDash?

If your order came through DoorDash, use DoorDash support. Dollar General stores do not accept DoorDash receipts for returns or exchanges. That rule can save you a trip to the store with the wrong purchase record.

Open the affected order in the service you used and identify the missing, wrong or damaged product. The order confirmation and photos, where useful, help explain whether the issue is with an item, the delivery or both.

The confusing part is the phrase “same-day delivery.” It can describe different services. A DoorDash order and a myDG Delivery order have separate support routes even when both arrive from a nearby Dollar General. Look at the name on the confirmation: DoorDash goes to DoorDash, while myDG goes to Dollar General’s delivery support. You do not need to work out which driver or store employee caused the problem before choosing that first contact.

16 / THE DETAILS

Will digital coupons come back after a delivery refund?

Digital coupons used on a refunded myDG Delivery order are not restored to your wallet. Dollar General treats them as used once the order is recorded as refunded.

That matters most when you plan to reorder after a delivery problem. You may get a merchandise refund without getting the same promotional price on the replacement basket. Look at the discounts still available before placing it, rather than waiting for the old coupon to reappear.

The item-level receipt also helps explain why the refund differs from the shelf price: a coupon may have reduced what you paid. If the calculation is unclear, ask support to break down the refunded merchandise and remaining order charges. This wallet rule is stated for myDG Delivery. It does not establish how every coupon is treated in a register return. Merchandise reimbursement and coupon restoration are two separate parts of the outcome.

17 / THE DETAILS

What is the easiest way to avoid a wasted return trip?

The fastest starting point is the purchase channel. Store receipt? Use the purchasing store and the 90-day packaging rule. Shipped order? Use Customer Care authorization and the 30-day unused-item rule. Delivery confirmation? Identify myDG or DoorDash.

For example, returning an unwanted store-bought household item is a different task from reporting missing groceries on a delivery. One starts at the original store; the other starts with the ordering service. The fact that both purchases came from Dollar General does not merge the processes.

Next, look at the exceptions that actually affect your item. Alcohol needs the receipt and original store, selected seasonal merchandise may be exchange-only, and shipped food is excluded. Without a store receipt, the stated alternatives are equal-value merchandise or a gift card. Once you know those details, you can choose a realistic outcome before spending time on travel or postage.
