Birkenstock Return Policy: 30 Days and the 40%-Off Final-Sale Rule

Birkenstock’s U.S. online returns allow 30 days from delivery. Learn the 40%-off final-sale rule, shoe-box requirements, free returns and store restrictions.

By October 13, 2026

The short answer

Eligible U.S. direct website footwear and accessories can be returned or exchanged free within 30 days of delivery in original condition and packaging. Sale styles discounted 40% or more are final sale. Website orders must return online; store and authorized-retailer purchases follow their own routes.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Use the store route only for products purchased at a Birkenstock store.
  2. Contact the purchasing store about its instructions and receipt requirements.
  3. Do not take direct website or other-retailer purchases to a Birkenstock store for a refund.

Online or by mail

  1. For a direct U.S. website order, enter the order number, email and billing postal code in the official portal.
  2. Follow its return instructions and preserve the original condition and unmarked packaging.
  3. Keep tracking and allow two to three weeks for refund processing.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Birkenstock’s U.S. return policy?

Eligible footwear and accessories bought directly at Birkenstock.com/us can be returned or exchanged free of charge within 30 days of delivery. They must remain in original purchase condition and original packaging, and every return is subject to inspection.

There is a significant sale exception: styles discounted 40% or more are final sale, with no return or exchange. Check the actual product and order details rather than assuming every sale pair is eligible.

The purchase channel determines the route. Direct website orders must be returned through the online process, not to a Birkenstock store or authorized retailer. Store purchases go back to the store; authorized-retailer purchases go back to that seller. This guide covers the U.S. direct policy and explains those distinctions so you can avoid sending an otherwise eligible pair to the wrong place.

02 / THE DETAILS

Does Birkenstock’s 30-day window start at purchase or delivery?

For eligible direct U.S. website orders, the window begins at delivery. Save the delivery record along with the confirmation email, especially if the order shipped after a wait or arrived separately from other purchases.

The 30-day limit should not be treated as a free wear-testing period. Condition and final-sale exclusions still apply throughout that window. A pair delivered recently can be ineligible because it was worn outdoors or marked final sale.

Start the process well before the deadline. The page does not establish a broad grace period for creating a request on the final day and then waiting indefinitely to ship. If a delivery date is disputed or the parcel arrived late, ask customer service about the actual order and retain its answer. Do not substitute the date you first opened the shipping carton for the recorded delivery date.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return worn Birkenstocks after breaking them in?

The ordinary direct return policy requires original purchase condition. It does not promise that sandals worn outdoors during a break-in period can be returned because you dislike the feel. Keep any fit assessment brief and indoors on a clean surface while deciding.

Protect the footbed and soles from wear, moisture, dirt and impressions. A pair that looks used can fail inspection even when it is within 30 days. Avoid modifying straps, adding products to the footbed or applying treatments before you decide to keep the shoes.

If discomfort is the reason, distinguish fit dissatisfaction from an identifiable defect. A stiff new footbed or a preference for another width does not by itself establish a manufacturing problem. Contact support if you are unsure; accurately describe the condition and use rather than selecting a defect reason solely to bypass the original-condition requirement.

04 / THE DETAILS

Are Birkenstocks discounted 40% or more final sale?

Yes. Birkenstock’s current U.S. policy says sale styles discounted 40% or more cannot be returned or exchanged. The threshold includes exactly 40%, not only discounts greater than that amount.

For example, a style discounted from a hypothetical $150 to $90 is 40% off and falls at that final-sale threshold. A lesser discount does not automatically make the item returnable either: check the item’s actual final-sale designation, purchase channel and condition requirements.

Review the product page before paying and keep the order confirmation. Do not assume that an unused pair or a wrong size removes a final-sale restriction. If a final-sale product arrives damaged or incorrect, contact customer service for instructions about that specific problem before sending it. The policy’s final-sale language does not publish a universal self-service exception for every complaint.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can you return a Birkenstock online order in a store?

No. Products purchased at Birkenstock.com/us must be returned through its online return process. The official policy expressly says they cannot be returned to a Birkenstock store or an authorized retailer.

This restriction can be easy to miss because the brand operates physical stores and sells through many other shoe retailers. A shared brand name does not mean the store has access to or accepts your website transaction.

For example, a pair bought directly online cannot simply be carried into a nearby authorized shoe shop for a refund. Start with the direct website portal and use the instructions supplied for the order. If you need a different size, contact Birkenstock customer service about an exchange rather than assuming a store can substitute stock. Save time by confirming the purchase channel before planning a trip.

06 / THE DETAILS

How do Birkenstock store purchases get returned?

Products purchased at a Birkenstock store must be returned to the store. The policy tells customers to contact the store directly and lists store-specific contact information. The direct website portal is not the published route for those counter purchases.

Keep the receipt and identify the exact purchasing location. Ask that store about the eligible deadline, item condition, payment handling and whether another location can assist. The main page does not establish that every store purchase can be refunded at any store nationwide.

Likewise, do not automatically transfer the direct online 30-days-from-delivery calculation to a pair you carried out of a store. There is no shipping delivery date for that transaction. Before traveling, obtain the store’s applicable instructions and bring the original packaging and purchase proof. A call can prevent a visit to a location that cannot process your transaction.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can Birkenstock accept shoes bought at Nordstrom, DSW or another retailer?

No. An authorized-retailer or other online-retailer purchase must be handled by that seller under its own policy. Birkenstock says those purchases cannot be returned through Birkenstock.com/us or at a Birkenstock store.

Identify who took payment and issued the receipt. The seller’s window, sale exclusions, shipping charges and condition standards govern the ordinary return transaction. A brand warranty or product-support question is a different process from a seller refund.

For example, Birkenstock sandals bought from another department store do not receive the direct website’s free-return route merely because the model is sold on both sites. Locate that store’s order record and current return instructions. If your order involved a marketplace seller, check the named seller as well. Keep the brand and seller separate when choosing the destination and estimating costs.

08 / THE DETAILS

How do you start a Birkenstock return online?

Use the official U.S. return portal and enter the order number, email address and billing postal code associated with the direct website purchase. Follow the order-specific instructions to select the eligible merchandise and prepare the return.

Check those fields against the order confirmation rather than guessing. A different recipient email or a shipping ZIP code may not match the requested billing information. If the portal cannot locate an order, contact customer service and confirm the purchase channel before trying repeated variations.

Save the return confirmation and label instructions. Starting a request is not the same as having the merchandise accepted after inspection. Do not include a final-sale style simply because it is in the same order as an eligible pair. Keep the products and paperwork clearly associated with the correct transaction.

09 / THE DETAILS

Are Birkenstock returns free, and is original shipping refunded?

Eligible direct website footwear and accessory returns or exchanges are free of charge under the published policy. Use the authorized process to obtain the appropriate instructions rather than buying postage first and assuming it will be reimbursed.

Birkenstock separately says shipping charges from the original order are not refunded. A free return route and a refund of the original delivery fee are different things.

For illustration, an accepted hypothetical $140 merchandise return can refund the merchandise amount and applicable sales tax, while an original shipping charge remains outside the ordinary refund. That is a payment example, not a guarantee of eligibility. For a store or third-party purchase, use that seller’s rules instead of assuming the direct website’s free-return promise follows the brand everywhere. Ask support about any order-specific shipping concern before paying for an alternative route.

10 / THE DETAILS

Do you need the original Birkenstock shoe box?

Yes, original packaging is part of the direct footwear and accessory return requirement. Birkenstock also says original containers must be unmarked and not defaced. Preserve the shoe box while deciding whether to keep the pair.

Use a protective outer shipping package and follow the supplied return instructions. As a practical precaution, place carrier labels on the outer parcel instead of damaging the original shoe box with shipping tape, addresses or postage. Keep the shoes and included materials together.

If the original box is missing or was damaged during delivery, contact support before shipping and explain what happened. The published rule does not promise an automatic missing-box exception. A clean, unworn pair alone does not establish that the packaging requirement is satisfied. Take photographs of the contents and packaging as useful records before handing over the return.

11 / THE DETAILS

How do you exchange Birkenstocks for another size or width?

For a direct website exchange, Birkenstock tells customers to contact customer service at 844-505-4055 or [email protected]. Eligible footwear and accessories must meet the original-condition and packaging rules and fall within 30 days of delivery.

Have the original order number, model, size, width and desired replacement ready. Confirm availability and ask for the correct exchange instructions. The policy’s contact-assisted exchange process should not be replaced with an assumption that the ordinary refund portal automatically reserves another pair.

Final-sale styles discounted 40% or more cannot be exchanged under the standard rule. If speed matters, ask about timing and any payment impact before placing a separate order. A replacement purchase and a return can produce overlapping charges until the original refund is processed. Keep those transaction records separate if you choose that approach.

12 / THE DETAILS

How long does a Birkenstock refund take?

Birkenstock asks customers to allow two to three weeks for refund processing. It inspects the returned merchandise and then credits the merchandise amount, including applicable sales tax, to the original payment method.

Keep shipping time separate from the retailer’s processing guidance. Printing a label does not establish warehouse receipt, and carrier delivery does not itself confirm acceptance after inspection. Save tracking and look for a refund or return update.

If the parcel was delivered but you have no processing confirmation after the stated period, contact support with the order number, tracking and returned-item details. If a refund has been issued but your account does not display it, confirm the date, amount and payment destination. The policy does not promise that a bank credit appears immediately at the moment the warehouse receives the shoes.

13 / THE DETAILS

Does Birkenstock refund the original payment method?

Yes. After inspecting an accepted return, Birkenstock credits the merchandise and applicable sales tax to the original payment method used. Original shipping charges are excluded under the ordinary policy.

Do not assume an accepted return can be redirected to a different card or paid to a gift recipient in cash. If the original card was replaced or the order used a payment service, ask customer service how that transaction will be handled.

Compare the credited amount with the actual paid price rather than the current list price. An item purchased at an eligible discount does not create a refund at today’s full price. Keep the order confirmation and any processing email until the credit appears. For split-payment or gift-funded orders, the main page does not explain every allocation, so request the specific breakdown rather than inventing one.

14 / THE DETAILS

What should you do if Birkenstocks arrive damaged or defective?

Contact Birkenstock customer service promptly and describe the specific problem. Include the direct order number and useful photographs of the issue and packaging. Ask whether the situation should be handled through an ordinary return, an exchange or another product-support process.

The general return page does not publish an unconditional lifetime guarantee or a universal defect exception to every final-sale and condition rule. A damaged delivery, a manufacturing concern and wear after use are different cases. Tell support what happened and when it was noticed.

Avoid altering or continuing to use the product while waiting for instructions. If a final-sale pair arrived incorrect or damaged, confirm the approved route before sending it. Keep the written instructions with your return records so the reason and authorization are clear when the parcel is reviewed.

15 / THE DETAILS

What is Birkenstock’s skin-care return policy?

The U.S. policy says skin-care items may be returned within 30 days of delivery. That statement appears separately from the footwear and accessories paragraph.

The page does not explain every opened-container, seal or hygiene scenario in that short skin-care provision. Check the product’s specific terms and ask support before assuming that a partly used product can be returned. Keep its original packaging and any included components while deciding.

For example, an unopened product you do not need and a product you have applied repeatedly are different conditions even though both may be within 30 days. Describe the actual state and reason accurately. If it arrived damaged or incorrect, report the order problem promptly. Do not transfer another beauty retailer’s trial-and-return promise to Birkenstock merely because both sell skin-care products.

16 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Birkenstocks received as a gift?

The seller and purchase record still determine the return route. For a direct website gift, obtain the order number, the order email and relevant billing postal code or ask the purchaser to help initiate the request. The ordinary online refund goes to the original payment method.

The published U.S. page does not promise a separate gift-recipient cash refund or automatic store credit. Ask customer service about an exchange if the size is wrong and the pair is otherwise eligible.

For a gift bought at a Birkenstock store or another retailer, use that seller’s process rather than the direct website portal. Keep the shoes unworn and the box unmarked. A gift’s being a surprise does not extend the 30-day direct delivery window or remove the final-sale restriction. Get the transaction details early enough to choose a valid route.

17 / THE DETAILS

What if you sent Birkenstock the wrong item by mistake?

Contact customer service as soon as possible. Birkenstock’s policy addresses mistakenly returned goods that are not authentic or authorized Birkenstock products. It says it will try to help locate and recover them, but is not responsible for replacing, returning or compensating for those incorrectly sent products.

Use 844-505-4055 or the official support email and supply the return tracking and order details. Describe the mistaken item accurately. Do not send a second parcel until you have instructions for separating the transactions.

Before sealing any return, compare the model, size and order paperwork. Similar cartons from multiple footwear purchases can be easy to mix up. Photographing the contents is a practical safeguard, especially when returning to more than one seller. The direct return process should contain only the products approved for that particular transaction.

18 / THE DETAILS

What should you check before returning Birkenstocks?

First confirm who sold the pair, the delivery or purchase date, final-sale status and condition. For a direct website purchase, preserve the original box and use the online route. Do not bring it to a brand store or authorized retailer expecting a refund.

Check the 40%-or-more sale threshold before planning a return or size exchange. For an eligible direct exchange, contact customer service with the desired size or width. For a refund, remember that original shipping is not refunded and processing can take two to three weeks.

Keep the confirmation, carrier receipt and refund records together. Resolve a missing box, damaged delivery or uncertain product condition before shipping. If the purchase came from another store, follow that seller’s rules. Choosing the correct channel is just as important as staying inside the deadline.
