Ross Return Policy: 30-Day Refunds, No-Receipt Credit and the Mailed-Voucher Rule

Check same-card refunds, ID verification, later store credit, tickets and when a no-receipt voucher arrives by mail.

By October 20, 2026

The short answer

Ross accepts eligible unused, unworn, unaltered merchandise with the original receipt within 30 days for an original-payment refund; bring the original payment card. Older receipted returns produce credit or exchange. Approved no-receipt returns use current selling price and picture ID; refunds over $50 are mailed as store-credit vouchers within 21 days.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring eligible merchandise, receipt, required tickets and the original payment card.
  2. Bring valid picture ID where required and confirm any category restriction.
  3. Check whether the outcome is original payment, store credit or a mailed voucher.

Online or by mail

  1. Ross says merchandise cannot be purchased online.
  2. Use a Ross store for the merchandise return; the website is for information and enquiries.
  3. Contact the store or official form before assuming any mail-return arrangement.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Ross Dress for Less’ return policy?

Ross gives a full refund to the original payment method for eligible merchandise returned with the original receipt within 30 days of purchase. Products must not be used, worn or altered. For a card purchase, bring the same credit or debit card: the policy says that card must be present to complete the refund.

After 30 days, a receipted return changes to an exchange or store credit. Without a receipt, eligible products can receive credit or an exchange at the current selling price, with valid picture identification and refund-verification approval. Certain categories require a receipt even for that route.

The distinction is useful when deciding whether to keep a purchase. A returnable, unworn garment with a receipt is different from a worn garment or an unidentified item. Ross’ verification system can decline transactions, so retain proof and check the product-specific restrictions rather than assuming every item can be exchanged regardless of condition.

02 / THE DETAILS

Does Ross allow returns after 30 days?

The policy allows eligible merchandise with a receipt older than 30 days to be exchanged or refunded as store credit. That is a different outcome from the original-payment refund available within the ordinary 30-day period. The receipt remains useful even when the refund form changes.

Do not treat that provision as permission to return used, worn or altered merchandise. The condition exclusion applies to refunds, store credit and exchanges. A later return still needs an eligible product and is subject to verification.

For an illustration, a never-worn shirt returned with its receipt on day 40 may be considered for credit or exchange rather than a reversal on the original card. If your priority is getting money back to that card, act during the standard window instead of relying on later shopping credit. Check the purchase date on the receipt, not the date you first planned to wear the item.

03 / THE DETAILS

What should you bring for a straightforward store return?

Bring the eligible merchandise, original register receipt and payment card used for a credit- or debit-card purchase. Keep relevant tickets attached, especially on categories where the policy specifically requires them. A valid picture ID may also be required for refund verification.

Check the receipt against the actual product before leaving. If you bought several similar garments, make sure the receipt and tags identify the one you want to return. Having a receipt for a different purchase does not establish the item’s eligibility or original price.

At the counter, ask the associate to confirm the refund amount and method. Keep the completed return receipt until a card credit appears or the issued store credit is available. For a gift, missing receipt or category restriction, explain the situation before selecting a replacement. The ordinary same-card requirement should not be replaced with an assumption that any cardholder or gift recipient can receive cash.

04 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an item without a receipt?

For an eligible no-receipt return, Ross requires valid picture identification and bases the exchange or store credit on the item’s current selling price. It does not promise the original purchase price or a cash refund for an undocumented transaction.

A current markdown can therefore affect the value. For an illustration, if an item was purchased for $35 but is currently sold for $20, the no-receipt process uses the current-price rule rather than proof of the earlier amount. Ask the counter to confirm the actual value before completing an exchange.

All returns pass through the verification system, and there is a limit on no-receipt refunds. The published page does not give a universal numerical allowance, so do not rely on a supposed fixed number of permitted returns. Some categories cannot be returned or exchanged without a receipt at all. Check the receipt’s printed category information or ask the cashier which rule applies.

05 / THE DETAILS

Why might a no-receipt refund arrive in the mail?

Ross says a no-receipt refund over $50 produces a store-credit voucher sent by mail within 21 days of the return transaction. The voucher is mailed to the address shown on the valid picture ID. This is a credit-delivery rule, not a promise of a check or cash payment.

If that situation applies, confirm the mailing details with the associate before finalizing the return. Someone expecting to use the credit immediately for another purchase should know that a larger no-receipt amount can involve a wait instead.

Keep the transaction receipt and note the date and amount. If the voucher does not arrive within the stated period, contact the store or use Ross’ official customer-service form with the return information. Do not confuse this 21-day mailing estimate with the ordinary 30-day original-payment window; the two numbers address different parts of the process. Ask the team which stage needs follow-up rather than repeatedly checking the original payment account.

06 / THE DETAILS

What identification can Ross request, and can a return be declined?

Ross lists a driver’s license, state photo ID, passport or military ID as examples of valid picture identification. The policy says ID may be required and entered into its refund-verification system. No-receipt transactions specifically require picture ID.

The system applies to returns generally, and Ross reserves the ability to decline a refund. A receipt helps establish the purchase but should not be interpreted as making every product or condition eligible. Used merchandise and categories with additional proof requirements still need to meet their rules.

If a transaction is refused, ask the store which requirement or verification result caused the problem and what information can be supplied. Keep the relevant receipt rather than trying a different description of the same purchase. Do not split a return to try to evade verification limits. Clear transaction information gives the store a better basis to explain the available options, even when it cannot approve the requested refund.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return worn clothes or something you altered?

No. The stated policy excludes refunds, store credit and exchanges for merchandise that has been used, worn or altered. An exchange is not a fallback route that removes the condition requirement when a refund would be refused.

Make fit and styling decisions before normal wear or alterations. A dress worn to an event and trousers shortened by a tailor are different from unworn products that simply do not fit. Keep any required original tickets intact while deciding, and retain the receipt where the category requires proof.

If the issue is a defect noticed before use, explain the actual problem to the store and ask how it will be assessed. Do not describe a damaged arrival, a fit issue and a change after wear as though they are interchangeable. The general page does not create a separate unlimited wear guarantee, so obtain instructions for the specific product rather than assuming an exception.

08 / THE DETAILS

Do swimwear, lingerie and other categories have tag requirements?

Ross expressly requires the original ticket to remain attached for swimwear and lingerie returns or exchanges. Keep that ticket intact while deciding whether the product works. Removing it can matter even when you still have a register receipt.

The policy also says selected categories require a receipt and may require tickets. It directs shoppers to the front of the receipt or the cashier for the category list. Because the public page does not enumerate every such category, avoid applying a blanket no-receipt option to every product sold in the store.

Before buying an item with uncertain fit or suitability, ask about any additional return requirements at checkout. Keep the receipt and ticket together until the decision is final. If an item was a gift, ask the giver to preserve the proof without discarding category information. A general store-credit rule cannot establish eligibility when a particular category requires documentation you no longer have.

09 / THE DETAILS

What happens if you paid by card or check?

Within the standard receipted window, Ross refunds eligible purchases using the original payment method. Credit- and debit-card refunds go to the same card used for the purchase, and the card must be present. Bring it with the receipt rather than assuming another card can receive the money.

Purchases made by check have a five-day waiting period for a cash refund. The return policy lists 1-800-767-7457 for inquiries in that check-payment context. It is not presented as a universal customer-service line for all merchandise issues.

Keep the return receipt and compare it with the payment record. The public policy does not promise one fixed number of days for every bank to display a card refund, so distinguish the completed store transaction from later account posting. If the credit seems missing, establish that a card refund was actually issued rather than store credit before asking about a payment delay.

10 / THE DETAILS

Is Ross’s check-inquiry phone number a general merchandise support line?

The cited policy lists 1-800-767-7457 specifically in its check-payment inquiry context. It is not presented as a universal customer-service number for every merchandise issue. Use the official contact route for other return questions.

11 / THE DETAILS

Can you exchange an item, and how does an earlier no-receipt exchange affect it?

Eligible merchandise can be exchanged, subject to the same condition, ticket, deadline and verification rules. Check whether the replacement is available before deciding that an exchange is the most useful outcome. Ross’ changing inventory means a particular size or color should not be assumed to be reserved.

The policy says previous exchanges made without a receipt are treated as non-receipted transactions. A new exchange document should not be interpreted as restoring original-receipt status to merchandise that entered through a no-proof return. Ask the counter how the transaction will be recorded.

Keep the replacement’s paperwork and the return receipt together. That makes it easier to understand the value carried into the new purchase and the rules for any later return. Do not assume an exchange restarts every deadline or creates a new cash-refund entitlement; use the actual receipt and ask which dates and proof apply to that replacement transaction.

12 / THE DETAILS

How do opened software and gift cards differ from ordinary merchandise?

Opened software cannot receive a refund under the published rule. If the software is defective, the policy provides an exchange for like merchandise. Do not interpret that specific defect exchange as permission to return any opened software because you no longer want it.

For gift cards, retain the original register receipt. Ross says a lost or stolen gift card can only be replaced for its remaining balance with the original receipt. The website also says gift cards and store credit do not expire. Keep them securely because losing the card can create a separate proof problem.

Those provisions do not establish a universal cash-redemption right or an ordinary merchandise-refund process for the gift card itself. Check the applicable gift-card terms and ask the store about the actual situation. A product purchased with a gift card, a merchandise-credit voucher and a lost gift card are different transactions, so identify which one needs assistance.

13 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Ross purchases online or by mail?

Ross’ official FAQ says merchandise cannot be purchased online. Its website is therefore not an ordinary order-history return portal for shipped Ross merchandise. Use the store return process and the receipt rather than looking for a prepaid mail label for an online purchase that Ross does not sell.

The website has a store locator for location details and opening hours. Check the actual Ross Dress for Less location you intend to visit. Do not assume a different retailer, an affiliated brand or an Amazon pickup counter has authority to process a Ross merchandise return.

If you cannot get to a store, ask Ross through its official contact form before shipping anything. The reviewed policy does not offer a general mail-return route, and a corporate mailing address should not be used as a warehouse destination without instructions. An online enquiry can clarify a return issue, but submitting the form does not itself complete the physical return or issue a refund.

14 / THE DETAILS

Does Ross have a confirmed holiday extension or a universal sale-item rule?

The reviewed live policy uses the ordinary 30-day original-payment period and the later receipt-based credit or exchange provision. It does not establish a separate blanket 2026 holiday extension. A gift bought early should therefore be planned around its actual purchase date and item restrictions unless Ross supplies a specific applicable offer.

The public page also directs certain category restrictions to the receipt or cashier. Do not assume every markdown is automatically final sale, or that every marked-down product is returnable without proof. Read the actual purchase information and preserve the condition and required tickets.

For a gift or seasonal purchase, keep the original receipt and decide early whether the item is suitable. The existence of later store credit should not be confused with keeping an original-card refund available indefinitely. Ask the store about a particular restricted product before relying on a general rule for an entire gift basket.

15 / THE DETAILS

How do you get help with a return, declined transaction or missing voucher?

Start with the store handling the merchandise or Ross’ official Contact Us form. The form allows a customer-service inquiry and asks for the information relevant to the selected issue. Use the store locator for location and hours rather than calling a number intended for credit-card account servicing.

Prepare the store, purchase date, receipt number, item, return date and expected refund method. For a mailed no-receipt voucher, include the amount and elapsed time since the transaction. For a refusal, explain the condition and proof available and ask what requirement was not met.

The form warns against sending payment-card numbers, Social Security numbers, driver’s-license numbers or banking details in the message. Give the necessary transaction description without pasting those identifiers. Keep a copy of the enquiry and response. The useful goal is a clear next action or explanation tied to the actual return, rather than an assumed guarantee that every disagreement can be overridden.
