How long do you have to return something to Burlington?
You have 30 days from the date of purchase. Bring your original receipt, and the refund goes back in the original form of payment. Returns without a receipt still happen, but they become merchandise credit at the lowest selling price instead of a refund. The page also acknowledges that receipted returns can be accepted after the 30-day mark, on merchandise-credit terms rather than a refund. Since the clock starts at purchase, not at some later date, hold onto the receipt from the day you buy.
“All items must be returned within 30 days of purchase.”
Do Burlington Loyalty members get a longer return window?
Yes, at some stores. The free Loyalty Program lists extended returns as a benefit: members get 45 days from purchase instead of 30. The catch is in the same sentence. The benefit is only available at select stores, and the page tells you to ask an associate which ones. The usual conditions still apply: third-party verification, and Burlington can limit or refuse any refund. If you are past day 30 and joined the program before you bought, it is worth asking at the counter before accepting merchandise credit.
“Extended Returns: Extended returns are only available at select stores, see associate for details. Returns will be accepted within 45 days of purchase.”
Can you return to Burlington without a receipt?
Yes, but the outcome changes. You must accompany the return with a photo ID — a driver's license, state-issued non-driver ID, passport, or military ID — and instead of a refund you receive a merchandise credit priced at the lowest selling price. That lowest-price rule also applies to returns made after 60 days. In practice that means an item you bought at full price and lost the receipt for can credit back at its clearance value, so the receipt is worth real money on any sizable purchase.
“Non-receipted returns, accompanied by a photo ID (driver’s license, state issued non-driver ID, passport, or military ID) and returns after 60 days will receive a merchandise credit for the lowest selling price.”
What happens if you return to Burlington after 30 days?
A receipted return accepted after 30 days does not go back to your card; it converts to a merchandise credit, less service fees. Past 60 days, the credit is computed at the lowest selling price, the same basis used for receiptless returns. Layaway-related items follow the credit path too: layaway deposits, payments, and returned layaway merchandise all come back as merchandise credit. So the late-return outcome is store spending power, reduced by any applicable service fees, not a payment reversal.
“Layaway deposits, payments and returned Layaway merchandise, as well as receipted returns after 30 days, will receive a merchandise credit (less service fees).”
Can you return worn, washed or opened items to Burlington?
No. Burlington requires merchandise to be in new condition, unused and unwashed, and in its original packaging. An item that has been worn, washed, or removed from its packaging falls outside that requirement, so keep tags and packaging intact until you are sure you are keeping the purchase. This single condition sentence is the page's entire exclusion list, so anything that fails it — regardless of category — is what the policy will not take back.
“Merchandise must be in new condition, unused and unwashed and in its original packaging.”
How do you start a return at Burlington?
Bring the item and your original receipt to a store within 30 days of purchase. The merchandise has to be in new condition, unused and unwashed, in its original packaging, so pack it the way it came before you head in. If the receipt is gone, bring a photo ID instead and expect merchandise credit at the lowest selling price rather than a refund. The policy page itself contains no portal, label, or mail-in flow — everything starts at the store with those two documents.
“All items must be returned within 30 days of purchase. Please bring your original receipt.”
How long does a Burlington refund take, and how is it paid?
The refund goes back in the original form of payment. A purchase made by check is credited to the original account rather than paid out in cash at the register, and a debit-card purchase made with a PIN comes back as cash. When the return falls outside the receipted 30-day window, or involves a completed layaway, the payment comes as merchandise credit instead. On timing, the policy ties each path to the original tender or to credit issuance rather than to a posted number of days.
“Refunds will be issued in the original form of payment. Returns from a check purchase will be credited to the original account. Debit cards using PIN will receive cash.”
What can't you return to Burlington?
The page draws the line at condition, not category: merchandise must be in new condition, unused and unwashed and in its original packaging, so anything used, worn, washed, or unpacked from its original packaging is what Burlington will not take back. Beyond that single requirement, the page names no category-specific bans. Returns that fail the receipt or timing rules are not refused outright either — they are rerouted to merchandise credit, less service fees for receipted returns accepted after 30 days.
“Merchandise must be in new condition, unused and unwashed and in its original packaging.”
Do Burlington jewelry-counter items follow different return rules?
Yes. Jewelry bought at the counter has a separate policy. You need the original receipt dated within 30 days, or 45 days if you are a Loyalty member, and the item can only go back to the store where you bought it. It must be new, unused, in its original packaging, and the home-removal tags must still be attached. Refunds go back to the original form of payment, except PIN debit purchases, which come back as cash. Photo ID is required on every jewelry return. Jewelry-counter items also cannot be put on layaway.
“An original receipt dated within 30 days (45 days for Loyalty members) is required for all returns/exchanges. May only be returned to the original store the merchandise was purchased.”
Does Burlington track or limit returns?
Yes. Every return passes a third-party verification process and system approval, and your ID information and return transaction history may be collected and entered into the processor's system where the law permits it. Burlington explicitly reserves the right to limit or refuse any refund. The ID requirement is also built into receiptless returns: no photo ID, no merchandise credit. For frequent returners, that verification trail is the mechanism that can turn a routine return into a declined one.
“All returns are subject to a third party verification process and system approval. Your ID information and return transaction history may be collected and entered into our processor’s system where permitted by law. We reserve the right to limit or refuse any refund.”
How do you reach Burlington about a return?
The return policy page itself routes questions through the Help Center's Contact Us link, which appears at the bottom of the policy as its support path. It is a general customer-service door rather than a returns desk: have your receipt and, for a receiptless return, your photo ID ready before you reach out, since verification is built into the return process. The policy page publishes no separate returns phone number or email address of its own.
“Did this Help? If not, please Contact Us.”
