Patagonia Return Policy: Refund, Repair or Merchandise Credit?

Patagonia return deadlines, the Ironclad Guarantee, $7 labels, free exchanges, used gear, dealer purchases, gift credits and repair fees explained clearly.

By October 12, 2026

The short answer

Patagonia has no fixed general return deadline for new and sale merchandise purchased from it, but asks for prompt fit or color returns in new condition with tags. Items older than a year or lacking proof may need Ironclad Guarantee review and may lead to credit or another remedy. Standard refund labels cost $7, waived for merchandise credit; qualifying exchanges have free shipping both ways.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Use the locator to choose a Patagonia-owned store, distinguishing independent dealers.
  2. Bring the product, proof of purchase and original payment card if available.
  3. Confirm refund or credit outcome and whether processing must finish at the distribution center.

Online or by mail

  1. Start the official return using the order number and email; use support or the manual form for older or unlisted orders.
  2. Choose refund method and review the $7 label or applicable waiver.
  3. Pack the merchandise with required documents and keep tracked shipping evidence.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is the Patagonia return policy?

Patagonia publishes no fixed general return deadline for new and sale items purchased from it. It asks that fit or color returns happen promptly and that those items stay new with tags attached. Older items, missing proof and performance problems can require review under its Ironclad Guarantee.

The useful question is therefore what you are returning and why. A new jacket in the wrong size can follow the normal return or exchange process. A heavily used jacket with a failed component needs a discussion about the condition and possible remedy.

Identify whether your purchase came directly from Patagonia, an authorized dealer or Worn Wear. Each has practical routing or payment distinctions. The table below separates common situations so you can choose between an original-payment refund, merchandise credit, exchange or repair without assuming they are interchangeable.

Is Patagonia’s Ironclad Guarantee a lifetime refund promise?

The Ironclad Guarantee supports repair, replacement or refund for dissatisfaction or product performance problems; it is not an unconditional lifetime cash-refund promise. Patagonia’s current return policy says normal wear and tear over a garment’s lifetime is not covered by the guarantee. Its guarantee page describes reasonable charges for wear-related repair.

When requesting help, explain the problem and the outcome you need. A broken zipper on otherwise usable gear may be a repair question, while a new item that does not fit is a normal exchange or return question. Avoid describing all age-related deterioration as a defect.

Keep the care label and any proof of purchase available. The retailer’s assessment can affect both eligibility and the form of the resolution. Ask about the proposed remedy before assuming the guarantee will reimburse the original purchase price.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Patagonia items after a year or after two years?

Items returned after more than one year may be reviewed by Patagonia’s Returns team under the Ironclad Guarantee. The policy says these cases can result in merchandise credit or a discount code toward a replacement, depending on the assessment. A return older than two years also needs the manual return-form route rather than the ordinary online order process.

Describe the item’s history honestly: when it was bought, how often it was used and what has failed. Keep the receipt if you have it, and photograph the issue before mailing. Age alone does not tell support whether the problem is a defect or ordinary wear.

Contact customer service when the route or likely outcome is unclear. Ask what evidence to include and whether repair should be considered before shipping an item you may still want to keep.

04 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Patagonia without a receipt or order number?

You can ask Patagonia to assess an item without proof, but you should not expect an automatic original-payment refund. The return policy says undocumented items may need guarantee review. Its store guidance allows possible merchandise credit or a discount code; gift guidance says a credit may reflect the last known sale price.

First look for order emails, account records or a receipt from the original retailer. A price you remember is not proof of what was paid. Online returns normally need the Patagonia order number and email; if the number is unavailable, use the official form or contact support.

Explain who sold the item and whether it was a gift. These details can determine the refund route. Keep the support instructions so the warehouse can identify the circumstances rather than receiving an unexplained parcel.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can you return a worn Patagonia jacket, fleece or backpack?

For fit or color preference returns, Patagonia asks for new condition with tags and prompt action. For an item that does not perform satisfactorily, use the Ironclad Guarantee discussion. Normal wear and tear is treated differently from a product problem.

For example, a fleece that is the wrong size on arrival should be evaluated before regular wear. A backpack with a failing buckle after use calls for an accurate description of the fault. Do not claim the backpack is new simply because you would prefer a refund.

Before sending used gear, describe stains, modifications or damage and ask whether the correct route is return assessment or repair. Follow the care instructions and preserve the style label. These steps help the team evaluate the product without turning a performance complaint into an inaccurate new-condition return.

06 / THE DETAILS

Can you return Patagonia sale items?

Patagonia’s general return policy includes both new and sale items bought from Patagonia. A discount does not by itself remove the standard route. However, the reason, condition, documentation and purchase source still affect how the return is handled.

Use the actual receipt amount when estimating an ordinary direct-purchase refund. Do not calculate the expected credit from the original full-price tag if you paid less. An authorized-dealer or undocumented return may have a different credit basis.

For a size exchange, check replacement availability promptly: discounted inventory can sell out quickly. Keep tags attached while deciding and record the style, color and size from the order. If an offer includes specific conditions, preserve those terms and ask support about any conflict before assuming the general sale-item statement overrides a product-specific restriction.

07 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an online Patagonia order in a store?

Patagonia-owned stores accept returns and can help with exchanges. Bring proof of purchase and the original credit or debit card if available. Some stores send merchandise to the distribution center to complete processing, so a counter visit does not always mean an immediate refund.

Use the store locator to distinguish a Patagonia-owned location from an independent authorized dealer. A dealer only processes its own original purchases; it is not a general return desk for every Patagonia.com order.

Tell staff how you bought the item and whether it was a gift. Ask where the refund or credit will go and retain the receipt showing acceptance. If processing is being completed elsewhere, ask how to follow its status. Food is excluded from the ordinary online return setup and needs separate customer-service instructions.

08 / THE DETAILS

Can Patagonia handle a purchase from REI or another authorized dealer?

Patagonia says it accepts returns on behalf of authorized dealers, but the outcome is usually Patagonia merchandise credit rather than money back to the dealer’s original payment method. With proof, it can base that credit on the amount paid. Without proof, its return policy identifies the last known sale price as the credit basis.

The original dealer remains a useful first contact if you want a refund under that seller’s rules. Another independent dealer cannot process the return merely because it stocks Patagonia products.

If you choose Patagonia’s route, use its return form or a Patagonia-owned store and include the original dealer receipt. Confirm the proposed credit before shipping. A Patagonia gift card or merchandise credit is usable store value, which may suit a replacement purchase but is different from a card refund.

How do Patagonia online returns and shipping labels work?

For a recent direct order, start through Patagonia’s official returns page using your order number and email. The provided $7 label includes tracking and insurance. If you lack the order number or the return is more than two years old, use the official return form and a carrier with tracking and insurance.

Select the correct merchandise and reason, then review the destination and refund option. Include the required paperwork and protect the items inside a sturdy package. Remove obsolete labels from a reused box to prevent conflicting routing information.

Save the shipping receipt until the refund is complete. If the portal cannot find your order, ask support for the proper route rather than trying a made-up order number or shipping to a retail address. An unexplained package makes both identification and processing harder.

10 / THE DETAILS

Does Patagonia offer free return shipping?

A standard Patagonia prepaid refund-return label costs $7, deducted from the refund. Patagonia waives that charge when you choose its merchandise credit instead of the original-payment refund. Eligible exchanges have free shipping both ways, and gift returns have their own fee waiver.

For a hypothetical $150 merchandise refund, a $7 label leaves $143 before separate tax or payment details. Choosing a merchandise credit may avoid the label deduction, but it changes where you can spend the refund. Decide based on the payment outcome you want.

Do not confuse outbound free-shipping offers with the return-label rules. Also check the method selected in the return summary: paying your own carrier creates a separate postage expense. Keep the summary so you can reconcile any deduction against the accepted return.

11 / THE DETAILS

How do Patagonia size and color exchanges work?

Online exchanges cover a different size, inseam or color of the same item at the same price. Patagonia says an original promo-code discount carries over to that qualifying exchange. A different style, different price, expedited shipment or items from several orders requires customer-service help.

The online process reserves the exchange order for 14 days. Patagonia must receive the original return within that period or the exchange can be canceled. Ship promptly; a printed label alone does not satisfy the receipt requirement.

Review the replacement details before confirming, particularly when names or colors are similar. Save the reservation and tracking. If the exchange is canceled, you can still pursue a refund return under the relevant policy. Ask support about availability when the size you need is not shown rather than assuming stock is being held indefinitely.

12 / THE DETAILS

What happens when you exchange Patagonia for a different style?

Contact customer service for an exchange involving a different style or price, instead of forcing it into the same-item online process. Patagonia’s exchange help says customer-service exchanges charge for the new item when it ships, then refund the original after receipt and processing.

That creates a possible period with both charges outstanding. If you need to avoid that overlap, discuss the sequence before asking for a replacement shipment. Also confirm whether the desired item is available and how any price difference will be handled.

Keep the replacement order number separate from the original return record. A shipment confirmation for the new jacket does not establish that the returned jacket has been processed. Follow each transaction to completion and contact support with the relevant order number if one part is delayed.

13 / THE DETAILS

How do Patagonia gift returns work?

Patagonia gift returns can go online or to a Patagonia-owned store for merchandise credit. Its gift help says the shipping fee is waived for online gift returns with the original order number. If you do not have that number, customer service can provide return-label guidance.

Include proof when available; without it, the credit may use the last known sale price. Fit or color returns should remain new with tags and be made promptly. Contact support for a gift more than two years old.

Check the email or delivery information for the credit before sending the item. A gift refund is spending value for supported Patagonia channels, not cash sent to the recipient’s bank. If you want another size, explain that preference so support can identify the appropriate exchange process.

14 / THE DETAILS

Where does a Patagonia refund go, and how do you track it?

For a standard documented direct return, review whether you selected the original payment method or merchandise credit. Dealer purchases, gifts and older or undocumented items can have different outcomes. Save the return confirmation so you can compare the actual result with the selected option.

Track carrier delivery, retailer processing and payment posting separately. The policy pages reviewed do not provide one universal posting time for every return scenario, so ask support for the current estimate applicable to your case. A carrier’s delivery notification is useful evidence, but it is not confirmation that the refund has been issued.

If credit is missing, have the original order, return reference, tracking and processing message ready. Ask which stage is outstanding. For a store return sent to the distribution center, retain the counter receipt identifying the handoff.

15 / THE DETAILS

Should you repair Patagonia gear instead of returning it?

Repair may be the most suitable route when you still want to use the item. Patagonia’s repair form asks for the product type, an optional five-digit style number from the garment tag and the problem details. Clean the product before sending it; dirty items can be sent back for washing.

The current form lists $15 for round-trip repair shipping and says most repair work is covered. Non-warranty wetsuit work can cost $20 to $80. It gives an average repair-and-return estimate of up to ten weeks after receipt, so plan around any upcoming trip.

Not every item is repairable, and replacement material may not match the original appearance exactly. Ask about the options for an unrepairable product and choose whether you want it returned or recycled before submitting the repair.

16 / THE DETAILS

Do Patagonia Worn Wear purchases use the same return process?

Check the Worn Wear order and current support instructions before using the direct-order return route. On our October 12, 2026 review, Worn Wear displayed a transition notice saying it was moving to Patagonia.com and would be offline October 7–13. Older FAQ instructions and portals should not be assumed to describe the completed transition.

For an existing Worn Wear purchase, retain the order email and ask the official team where to return it. The FAQ lists [email protected] and 855-638-9676. Do not place used-marketplace merchandise into a direct Patagonia return box without confirmation.

The Ironclad Guarantee remains relevant to authentic Worn Wear products, but guarantee coverage and the operational return portal are different questions. Confirm the refund method and label instructions for your actual order. The transition does not justify inventing a new deadline or a universal free-return promise.

17 / THE DETAILS

Do Patagonia Provisions food returns have a separate deadline?

Yes. Patagonia’s return policy gives Provisions food orders a 90-day window and directs you to customer service. Its store guidance also excludes food from the ordinary online return setup. Do not apply the apparel policy’s lack of a set time limit to food purchases.

Identify the product, order date and issue before contacting support. If food arrives damaged or appears unsafe, stop using it and describe the problem accurately. Keep the packaging information useful for identifying the batch rather than mailing perishable contents without instructions.

Ask whether the resolution requires any physical return and what handling method is appropriate. The general apparel label is not an instruction to send every food item through the same route. Keep the approval or response with the order so you can follow the specific resolution agreed for that purchase.

18 / THE DETAILS

What should you ask Patagonia before sending a return?

Call 800-638-6464 or use the official help center when proof, age, purchase source or condition changes the route. The help pages currently list weekday assistance from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific and weekend assistance from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pacific.

Prepare a concise explanation: product, purchase source, approximate age, current condition, specific problem and preferred outcome. Ask whether to use the portal, a manual form, a store visit or repair service. Confirm the likely refund destination and any shipping charge.

Keep the answer with your order and tracking. For future purchases, assess fit before wearing, preserve the tags and receipt, and choose the exchange promptly if needed. These steps help you use Patagonia’s flexible policy without treating every guarantee review as an automatic refund.
