REI generally gives members one year and nonmembers 90 days from purchase to return eligible gear under its satisfaction guarantee. Outdoor electronics have a 90-day window for everyone. Used gear can qualify, but ordinary wear, misuse, accidental damage, and final-sale exceptions are not covered.
How long do REI members and nonmembers have to return gear?
The general satisfaction-guarantee window is one year for members and 90 days for nonmembers, measured from purchase. Eligible e-bikes are included in the general policy, but category exceptions still matter.
Proof of purchase is required. Membership does not make every item returnable for a year.
Read the official REI return policy.
| Purchase type | Published return window |
|---|---|
| Eligible member purchases | One year from purchase |
| Eligible nonmember purchases | 90 days from purchase |
| Outdoor electronics, members or nonmembers | 90 days |
| Re/Supply purchases in store | As-is and final sale |
| Re/Supply online purchases | Separate 30-day rule described in REI’s exceptions |
| Manufacturing defects | May be returned at any time; separate from normal wear |
Can you return used shoes, clothing, tents, or other gear to REI?
Yes, use alone does not disqualify an item under REI’s satisfaction guarantee. But eligibility depends on the reason, timing, condition, and proof of purchase. A used item is not automatically approved simply because it is inside the deadline.
Clean and launder used items before returning them. REI can refuse merchandise that has not been cleaned. Its guarantee does not cover ordinary wear and tear, improper use, or accidental damage. REI may also restrict returns if it determines its policy is being abused.
What is REI’s return policy for watches and outdoor electronics?
Outdoor electronics have a 90-day deadline for members and nonmembers. REI’s examples include activity monitors, GPS devices, bike trainers, emergency communication devices, and cameras.
Do not use the one-year member deadline for an item in this category. Check your purchase date and product classification before relying on a deadline calculator.
Can you return something to REI without a receipt?
REI requires proof of purchase. A member may be able to use the purchase history tied to their membership; that depends on the transaction having been associated with the account. For online orders, have the order number available.
For a nonmember store purchase, keep the paper or email receipt. Membership is not a substitute for evidence of a transaction that cannot be located.
Can you return an REI online purchase in a store or by mail?
Eligible purchases made online, by phone, or in a store can generally be returned to a regular REI store or by mail with proof of purchase. Re/Supply stores do not accept returns.
For a store return, bring the item and proof of purchase to the service desk. For mail, begin REI’s return process and follow the packing and label instructions. Save the tracking receipt. Large items and restricted shipments require additional planning; not every product can use the online mail-return service.
How much does an REI mail return cost?
REI’s standard prepaid return-label fee is $7.99, deducted from the refund. Eligible oversize items have a listed $21.95 fee.
For packages over 32 pounds, confirm the actual charge before shipping. REI’s help page is inconsistent: one answer describes additional weight-based fees on top of the standard or oversize charge, while another says $21.95 replaces $7.99. We therefore do not present a flat heavy-package fee as settled. Check the fee shown in the return process or ask REI.
REI lists a return-label-fee waiver for verified REI errors and returns valued below $7.99. If you use your own carrier, REI does not deduct its label fee, but you pay that carrier yourself.
Read the official REI return policy.
| Return method | Cost consideration |
|---|---|
| Regular REI store | Avoids the prepaid mail-label charge |
| Standard REI prepaid label | $7.99 deducted from refund |
| Eligible oversize prepaid return | $21.95 listed fee |
| Package over 32 pounds | Confirm charge; official FAQ answers conflict |
| Your own carrier | Pay the carrier directly |
How do you return an REI bike, kayak, or other large item?
REI’s online mail-return service supports certain oversize items, including bike trainers, single jogging strollers, skis, and snowboards.
Bikes, kayaks, canoes, car-top boxes, rooftop tents, and double jogging strollers cannot use that online mail-return service. Return them to an appropriate REI store or arrange your own shipping as directed by REI. Check the receiving arrangements and carrier cost before paying to ship a bulky item. Do not assume an ordinary prepaid label covers it.
How long does an REI refund take?
Refunds generally follow the original payment method, with important exceptions for mailed store purchases and larger cash refunds. Once processed, your financial institution may need up to 10 additional days to post the credit. Shipping time and REI’s processing time are separate.
A store purchase returned by mail is refunded by check; REI says to allow up to three weeks from receipt of the return. Cash refunds of $500 or more are also issued by check.
PayPal purchases are refunded to PayPal. Mailed Apple Pay returns are credited to the associated payment card. Original standard, oversize, and expedited shipping charges are not refunded unless the return involves an REI error or verified product defect.
Can you exchange gear at REI?
For a mailed exchange, return the unwanted item and place a new order for the replacement. REI does not process a direct exchange through the mail.
For an in-store replacement, bring the item and proof of purchase to a regular REI store. Check availability before traveling. A replacement purchase may have a different price, particularly for clearance merchandise; do not assume the original sale price is guaranteed.
How do you return an REI gift without refunding the buyer?
For a mailed gift return using REI’s own-carrier instructions, include proof of purchase and a note making clear that the refund is for the gift recipient. Include your name, membership number if applicable, mailing address, phone number, and email address.
Missing recipient details or an unclear request can cause the refund to go to the original purchaser. REI describes gift-recipient refunds by check, allowing up to three weeks after it receives the return. Read its gift-return instructions before mailing rather than starting a standard return under the buyer’s account.
Can you return REI Re/Supply purchases?
Re/Supply purchases made in a store are sold as-is and are final sale. They do not receive the ordinary one-year member satisfaction window. REI’s return-policy exceptions separately describe a 30-day return window for online Re/Supply purchases. Follow the instructions associated with that order.
Re/Supply stores cannot accept returns, including returns of regular REI purchases. Keep the purchase channel and the return location separate when planning your trip.
Can you return defective gear after REI’s normal deadline?
REI says products with manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship may be returned at any time. This is distinct from being dissatisfied with an otherwise sound product after the regular window.
Normal wear, accidental damage, and improper use do not become manufacturing defects because the item stopped working. Bring proof of purchase and a clear explanation of the problem; applicable warranty terms and the condition of the item matter.
What should you check before returning gear to REI?
- Confirm membership status for the purchase and find proof of purchase.
- Check whether the item is outdoor electronics or a Re/Supply purchase.
- Clean used gear and gather its parts and accessories.
- Choose a regular REI store or a permitted mail method.
- For a heavy or bulky package, confirm the charge and shipping eligibility first.
- For gifts, specify who should receive the refund.
- Keep tracking and refund records until the money arrives.
