THE RETURN GUIDE · Warehouse

Costco
return policy.

Most Costco purchases have no return deadline. The exceptions are where shoppers get caught out.

Policy checked September 22, 2026 Official source ↗

The short answer

Costco’s Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee has no stated deadline for most merchandise. The important exception is a 90-day window from receipt for electronics, major appliances, and recreational carts ordered online. Online orders can be returned to any warehouse or through Costco.com, and Costco says it refunds shipping and handling on eligible online returns.

How long do you have to return something to Costco?

For most merchandise, Costco does not set a return deadline. Its published Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee says it will refund your purchase price, subject to a defined list of exceptions.

That broad policy is not a reason to wait on every purchase. Check the product category first, because electronics and major appliances have a much shorter clock. Keep your order details or warehouse receipt with the item so the return can be located quickly.

Which Costco items have a 90-day return window?

Costco gives 90 days from the date you received the item for televisions, projectors, computers, touchscreen tablets, smart wearables, cameras, drones, camcorders, MP3 players, and cell phones. Major appliances also use the 90-day window, including qualifying refrigerators, freezers, ranges, cooktops, microwaves, range hoods, dishwashers, water heaters, washers, and dryers. Recreational carts ordered online are included as well.

For these products, delivery or receipt—not the order date—is the date to track. Test a television, computer, or appliance early enough to spot a problem before the window closes.

Can you return a Costco.com order to a warehouse?

Yes. Costco says an online purchase can be returned at any Costco warehouse. This is often the quickest route because Costco says warehouse returns receive an immediate refund, including shipping and handling fees where applicable.

Bring the item and the order information you have. Costco notes that payment methods can differ between Costco.com and warehouse purchases, so the refund is returned to the card used when possible rather than assuming every purchase follows the same route.

How do Costco.com mail returns work, and who pays?

Sign in to Costco.com, open Orders & Returns, and choose Return or Replace Items for the eligible order. Costco says it provides a return label within an hour or offers a pickup where eligible; larger items receive separate instructions by email.

Costco says it does not charge return shipping for eligible Costco.com returns, including returns because you are dissatisfied or bought the item by mistake. Some products cannot use the self-service online process, so follow the instructions shown for the specific order rather than sending an item back on your own.

Does Costco refund original shipping and handling?

For eligible Costco.com returns, Costco says it refunds the item price including shipping and handling fees. This applies whether you return the online order through Costco.com or take it to a warehouse, subject to the limits in Costco’s published policy.

Review the product page’s shipping and returns information for unusually large, custom, or otherwise restricted merchandise before relying on a general rule.

Which Costco purchases cannot be returned?

Costco lists several categories as nonrefundable, including airline and live-performance event items, precious metals, Shop Cards, gift cards, and tickets. Custom products made to your specifications through the Special Order Kiosk or custom-installed programs are not returnable except for warranty repair.

Cigarettes and alcohol cannot be returned where prohibited by law. Tires and batteries may carry separate limited-warranty terms. These exceptions are product-specific, so do not apply the open-ended satisfaction guarantee without checking the item’s category.

What is Costco’s return rule for larger diamonds?

Diamonds of 1.00 carat or more need their original IGI or GIA documentation when returned. Costco says it issues a Jewelry Credit Memo while a gemologist checks the item.

Keep the certificate, appraisal-related paperwork, and packaging together from the day you receive a qualifying diamond. Losing the original grading document can complicate an otherwise eligible return.

What if a Costco.com item arrives damaged, incorrect, or defective?

Use Costco.com’s return or replacement flow for defective, damaged, incorrect, duplicate, missing, or lost shipments. Costco also identifies deliveries refused because of damage as a case its online process can handle.

For a missing part or piece, contact Costco rather than assuming a standard return is the right remedy. Costco also directs many electronics questions to Costco Technical & Warranty Services, which can be useful when you want help rather than a refund.

What do real Costco return scenarios look like?

Costco’s written policy should be your plan. Real-world experiences are useful for knowing what information to bring, but they do not replace the policy.

A device develops a documented fault after day 90. The 90-day deadline is still the rule for electronics. Explain the defect, bring the product and its accessories, and use Costco Technical & Warranty Services if the issue is a warranty matter. Thrifle’s Costco 90-day electronics explainer separates the written deadline from discretionary handling for a genuine problem; do not treat a late return as guaranteed.

You received a Costco gift and do not have the buyer’s receipt. A gift can be trickier than a purchase tied to your own membership. Community accounts commonly point to the purchaser’s membership number or proof of purchase as the helpful path. One recent Costco Returns discussion makes that practical constraint clear. Ask the warehouse before making a special trip.

The item is opened but still complete. Reddit discussions often distinguish packaging from the item’s contents: returning all of the components and accessories gives the desk what it needs to inspect. A Costco Wholesale discussion makes the same practical point. Keep the box if convenient, but focus first on bringing the complete item.

The big picture is still unusually shopper-friendly. Thrifle’s return-policy database tracks more than 2,200 return policies and rates Costco A+, placing it among the strongest retailer policies it covers. That generosity works best when shoppers respect clear exclusions and firm category deadlines.

What should you check before returning a Costco purchase?

  • Confirm whether the item is ordinary merchandise or a 90-day exception.
  • For electronics and major appliances, calculate 90 days from receipt or delivery.
  • Keep diamond certificates and all item-specific paperwork.
  • For an online order, choose a warehouse return, online label, or pickup only through Costco’s instructions.
  • Check the item’s product page if it is custom, large, high-value, regulated, or otherwise unusual.
