Office Depot Return Policy: 90-Day Supplies, 14-Day Tech and No-Receipt Limits

Find the deadline for supplies, ink, technology and furniture, then compare free mail labels, store returns and refund methods.

By October 20, 2026

The short answer

Office Depot’s consumer policy gives office supplies 90 days, unopened ink and toner 30 days, and technology, furniture and packaged media 14 days, with category-specific condition rules. Eligible online purchases have a free mail-label route or store returns. Technology without original proof is not returnable; several safety, custom and gift-card categories are excluded.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring eligible merchandise with original receipt, eReceipt, packing slip or order confirmation.
  2. Check its specific category deadline and condition requirements.
  3. Confirm the refund method and keep the receipt.

Online or by mail

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Office Depot’s return policy?

Office Depot and OfficeMax use different return windows by product category. With accepted purchase proof, office supplies generally have 90 days, ink and toner have 30 days, and technology, electronics, furniture and packaged media have 14 days. The condition requirements differ too, so the longest period should not be applied to an entire mixed basket.

Eligible purchases made in a store or online can be taken to an Office Depot or OfficeMax checkout counter. Online purchases also have an account-based mail-return process with a free return label. Keep the receipt, packing slip or order confirmation and the original packaging while deciding.

There are important exclusions. Downloadable software, specified cleaning and safety categories, gift cards and certain custom products do not follow ordinary return rules. Office Depot brand products have an anytime provision that specifically excludes ink and toner. Check the category and purchase terms before assuming an inexpensive office item has the same rules as a printer.

02 / THE DETAILS

How do the 90-day, 30-day and 14-day windows compare?

The consumer return table lists 90 days for office supplies, provided they are unopened and in their original packaging. Ink and toner have 30 days under the same unopened-packaging condition. Technology and electronics have 14 days and must be like new, with original packaging and the UPC code.

Furniture also has 14 days, but must be unassembled, in original packaging with the UPC code, and include parts and manuals. Packaged software, CDs, DVDs and video games have a 14-day rule, with an unopened-package refund route and an exact-item exchange provision when opened.

For a mixed purchase, record the shortest relevant deadline first. A printer, toner and unopened paper can each have a different return decision even when paid for together. Use the receipt and order details to confirm the actual date rather than assuming a delivery-based extension or an additional grace period that the category table does not promise.

03 / THE DETAILS

What condition does technology need to be in?

Office Depot’s technology and electronics rule allows a like-new return within the 14-day category window, with original packaging and the UPC code. That is different from a broad, long-term equipment trial, and it does not remove the need for the original purchase proof.

Keep the carton, inserts, cables, manuals and other supplied components together while evaluating the product. Before returning an electronic device, remove personal files and account connections using the manufacturer’s normal instructions. Keep your own backup before resetting anything; the retailer’s return process is not a personal data-storage service.

If the product is defective, explain that issue accurately to the retailer and ask how the item should be handled. Do not assume a manufacturer warranty and an ordinary store refund have identical deadlines or outcomes. The appropriate response can depend on whether you are returning a like-new unwanted product, reporting an arrival problem or seeking service after the return period.

04 / THE DETAILS

Can you return an assembled desk or chair?

The ordinary furniture row requires an unassembled product in original packaging, including the UPC code, parts and manuals, within 14 days. A fully assembled desk that you no longer want should not be assumed to qualify under that condition.

Check dimensions and the package contents before starting construction if you are still deciding. Keep hardware bags, instructions and protective packaging so a genuine eligible return remains complete. Trying to remove a label or discard the carton before deciding can make the required return condition harder to meet.

If furniture arrived damaged or parts are missing, contact Office Depot about the actual problem before dismantling or arranging transport. Special-order and custom-made items have separate restrictions, with a stated damaged-on-arrival exception. A standard stocked chair and a desk made to particular requirements are different purchases, so identify the product and its order classification before asking for a return or replacement.

05 / THE DETAILS

Can opened ink, toner or software be returned?

The ink-and-toner row provides 30 days for unopened products in original packaging. Do not assume a cartridge qualifies for an ordinary change-of-mind refund after installation, even if you later discover a cheaper option or decide to use a different printer.

Packaged software, CDs, DVDs and video games have a separate 14-day rule. Unopened packages can use the ordinary eligible-return route; opened packaging can be exchanged for the same item. Downloadable software is specifically nonreturnable under the consumer table.

Check model compatibility before opening a cartridge, and check whether software is a download or a physical product before paying. If an item is defective, describe the fault and ask which exchange or support arrangement applies. A wrong compatibility choice and a manufacturing defect should not be merged into a promise that every opened item can be refunded. Keep the receipt and packaging for either discussion.

06 / THE DETAILS

Are Office Depot brand products really returnable anytime?

The consumer category table lists Office Depot brand products as returnable anytime, with ink and toner explicitly excluded. That brand-specific benefit should not be stretched into an unlimited rule for every product sold in the store or every cartridge bearing an Office Depot label.

Check the actual brand on the item and the receipt, then compare it with the category restrictions. An Office Depot store selling a different manufacturer’s printer does not turn that printer into an Office Depot brand product. The separate ink-and-toner rule still matters even when the merchandise is private label.

Keep proof and product information available when asking the store about the benefit. The table does not provide an unconditional promise that every unidentified, incomplete or restricted product will receive a cash refund at any age. If an older brand product has a problem, explain the purchase and condition and ask the team to confirm the available remedy before sending anything.

07 / THE DETAILS

How do you return an online or pickup purchase in a store?

Bring the eligible item and accepted purchase proof to an Office Depot or OfficeMax checkout counter within its category period. The policy recognizes an original register receipt, eReceipt, packing slip or order confirmation as original proof for the refund rules.

Online orders collected in a store can also be returned or exchanged in store. The ordering method does not automatically create a longer technology or furniture window. Keep the receipt and product packaging and check the item’s category before making the trip.

At the counter, confirm the refund amount and destination, especially if a gift card, reward certificate or check was involved. Some refunds use a Return Card or a later check rather than immediate cash. Keep the completed return receipt with the original purchase information. For a bulky product or a custom order, contact the store first to confirm that the ordinary counter route applies.

08 / THE DETAILS

How do you get a free mail-return label?

For an eligible online purchase, sign in to the Office Depot account and open order history. Select the order, choose Return, then identify the products being returned or exchanged. The policy says an online account is required for the self-service mail route.

Print the free label and follow the supplied packing and carrier instructions. Although the page describes dropping the parcel at a carrier location, use the carrier identified by your actual label rather than treating every drop-off counter as interchangeable. The mobile app also offers a self-service return route.

Keep the confirmation, packing information and carrier receipt until the refund is complete. If you cannot locate the order or do not have access to the account, ask customer service about the appropriate alternative. Do not assume an original store purchase can be entered into the online return portal simply because the same product is sold on the website.

09 / THE DETAILS

What should go in the return parcel?

Send the correct product with the required original packaging, components and return documentation. Compare the selected item with its model number and the actual contents before sealing the box, particularly when returning several similar cartridges or pieces of equipment.

Office Depot warns that it and its supply-chain affiliate Veyer do not compensate customers for mistaken returns. Its page describes a ten-day holding period before such items are donated or recycled. If you think the wrong product was sent, contact customer service promptly rather than waiting for an ordinary refund update.

The retailer does not guarantee a mistakenly shipped item can be found. If located, the customer must provide a shipping account, label or other method to have it returned; the affiliate is not responsible for paying to send it back. This makes the final packing check useful: a correct order selection online cannot fix a different item placed in the carton.

10 / THE DETAILS

Can you return something without a receipt?

All no-receipt returns require valid government identification. The policy excludes technology products without original purchase proof, so a photo ID does not substitute for a receipt in every category. Try locating the eReceipt, packing slip or order confirmation first.

For software, CDs, DVDs and video games without proof, the stated option is an exact-item exchange only. For other eligible merchandise active in the retailer’s system, the refund is an Office Depot or OfficeMax Return Card based on the lowest retail price during the preceding 90 days.

That can produce less credit than the original purchase price, and the retailer reserves the right to deny a return or exchange. Check the likely amount before surrendering the item. A product’s present price tag does not establish what was paid, and a current clearance price can affect a no-proof valuation. Keep the transaction record whenever possible, especially for expensive technology.

11 / THE DETAILS

How will a refund be paid, and how long might it take?

The published tender rules depend on how the purchase was funded. Cash and checks written more than ten days previously are refunded in cash. A more recent check or an Office Depot OfficeMax gift-card payment produces a Return Card, which the policy says is received within three to four weeks.

Credit- and debit-card refunds depend on the relevant provider’s processing time. Rewards-certificate purchases are listed for a check refund within three to four weeks. For PayPal, Office Depot directs shoppers to PayPal’s refund guidance rather than giving one universal posting estimate for every payment source.

The page says store returns have faster processing than mailed returns, but that should not be turned into a guaranteed same-day bank credit. Keep the return receipt and identify the refund form first. Someone waiting for a mailed Return Card or check should follow that process instead of checking only the original card account.

12 / THE DETAILS

How do Classroom Wish List gifts work?

If you received products through a Classroom Wish List, Office Depot directs you to find the delivery confirmation email and bring it to a local Office Depot or OfficeMax store. The refund is a Return Card for the amount the buyer paid for the product.

That is a dedicated gift process, not a general cash refund to the person holding the supplies. It helps distinguish a classroom recipient from the purchaser and connects the item to the actual contribution. Keep the confirmation even when no paper receipt was included in the delivery.

Check the item’s eligibility and condition before visiting. A wish-list product can still belong to a category with a shorter period or a nonreturnable restriction; the existence of a gift does not automatically override the category table. If the product is damaged or the email cannot be found, ask customer service what documentation it needs before mailing a package or assuming the giver’s payment can be redirected.

13 / THE DETAILS

Which products are excluded from ordinary returns?

The live consumer table marks cleaning, breakroom, safety and facility merchandise as nonreturnable. Its examples include COVID test kits, personal protective equipment, masks, gloves, goggles, gowns, thermometers and related products. Gift, prepaid and phone cards are also nonreturnable, and downloadable software has its own explicit exclusion.

Special-order or custom-made merchandise may not be returned unless damaged upon receipt. Technology services are governed by each service’s terms rather than the general merchandise table. Read those conditions before buying a custom product or paying for a service that cannot be treated like an unopened pack of stationery.

If the order arrived damaged, contact the retailer with the actual item and purchase details rather than guessing at an exception. The policy’s manufacturer-direct FAQ permits eligible catalog and website purchases through the normal channels, but a custom-made restriction still needs checking. Direct shipment alone and nonreturnable customization are different characteristics of an order.

14 / THE DETAILS

Does the same policy apply to business purchases and holiday orders?

This guide covers the consumer Office Depot and OfficeMax policy. A purchase made under a business account, contract or a separate business website can have its own agreement. Identify the seller and account before applying the consumer category table to a company order.

The reviewed consumer page does not establish a separate blanket 2026 holiday extension. Use the ordinary product windows unless your actual order includes a confirmed seasonal offer. A gift purchased early for an office event should not be assumed to receive extra time merely because it will be opened later.

For an order containing both supplies and technology, review each product separately. The 90-day paper window does not protect a 14-day printer, and an anytime private-label provision excludes ink and toner. Save any item-specific or seasonal terms with the receipt so a later return decision is based on the actual purchase rather than a general advertising message.

15 / THE DETAILS

How can you get help with a failed return or missing refund?

Office Depot’s policy lists 1-800-GO-DEPOT, or 1-800-463-3768, for help with a mistaken return. Its website also links a help center and customer-service chat. Use those shopping-support channels for merchandise questions, rather than assuming a separate business-program number covers every consumer order.

Prepare the receipt or order number, product category, request date, tracking and expected refund type. For a mailed item, distinguish carrier handover from warehouse delivery and refund issuance. For a Return Card or check, keep the stated delivery period and any mailing information provided by the team.

Ask a concrete question: whether a category restriction applies, whether an order can be found, what amount was approved or where the refund was sent. If the wrong item was packed, raise that immediately because of the stated holding period. Retain the case reference and written instructions until both merchandise and payment are resolved.
