Eligible LEGO.com returns have 90 days from receipt and free return shipping. Opened sets need customer-service help and use gift credit or exchange; qualifying store returns must be unopened, under $200 and receive gift-card refunds.
How to start a return
In a store
- Check that sets are unopened and total under $200; ask about an exact-$200 return.
- Bring original packing list or receipt dated within 90 days to a Brand Retail Store.
- Expect a gift card; Certified Stores and excluded categories use different routes.
Online or by mail
- Open My Orders; guests use order number and email.
- Follow the return process, include qualifying gifts and securely box the items.
- Attach the prepaid label and keep drop-off tracking.
What is LEGO’s U.S. return policy and how long do you have?
LEGO’s U.S. shop gives 90 days from receipt of the order to make an eligible return. Standard mail refunds go to the original payment method, but opened items and store drop-offs have different outcomes. Excluded products do not become returnable just because they are less than 90 days old.
Keep the delivery confirmation and order email while deciding whether to keep a set. The delivery-based starting point is useful for a gift ordered well before it will be given, but the return window does not automatically restart when the recipient opens it.
Before choosing a route, check four things: where the set was bought, whether its seals are intact, what the total return is worth, and whether you want the money back to the original tender. Those details determine whether an ordinary online return, customer-service review or limited LEGO Brand Retail Store option is the appropriate next step.
| Decision | Rule to check |
|---|---|
| Return window | 90 days from order receipt |
| Shipping or fees | Free prepaid return label for eligible online returns |
| Main exceptions | Gift cards; Pick a Brick; Create a Minifigure; customized Minifigure Factory orders |
How do you start a LEGO.com return online?
Open LEGO’s My Orders page. Members can choose the sets to return; guests supply the order number and email address to receive a return-processing link. Select the correct purchase and follow its current directions.
Prepare merchandise in original condition, pack it securely in a sealed box and attach the prepaid label. Use the drop-off instructions provided with that label. Keep the order confirmation and return details together so you can match each selected set with what is actually going into the parcel.
You do not need to invent an account history for a guest purchase. Check the email used at checkout and copy the order number accurately from the confirmation. If the transaction cannot be located, contact customer service before sending the sets. An unidentified parcel is harder to trace than one linked to a return created for the correct order.
Does LEGO offer free return shipping?
LEGO advertises free returns for eligible items and tells shoppers to attach its prepaid label. The exclusions and route requirements still apply. Free postage should not be interpreted as permission to return gift cards, customized minifigures or other listed nonreturnable purchases.
Use the label generated through the official process rather than buying unrelated postage and assuming LEGO will reimburse it. Check the carrier and drop-off point shown in the instructions, particularly if you have several return labels saved from different shops.
Keep the acceptance receipt and tracking details. They establish the handover and later delivery, while the original order number identifies the purchase. If the item arrived damaged or there is another problem that makes ordinary packing difficult, explain it to support first. The free-return wording does not tell you to dispose of the set or send damaged contents without obtaining appropriate instructions.
How should you package a LEGO set for return?
LEGO asks for items in original condition, safely and securely packed in a sealed box. Use an outer shipping carton that protects the product packaging rather than exposing a collectible retail box directly to labels and carrier handling.
Check the set number and the return selection before sealing. Include the products covered by that return and any qualifying gift with purchase. Keep related paperwork with the parcel as the instructions require. For an opened item, customer service needs to be involved and LEGO specifically requires the original packing list or receipt.
Do not mix loose pieces from different sets or assume a partly rebuilt model is equivalent to an unopened set. If you are unsure what to send, describe the condition to support before packing. A photograph of the contents and sealed parcel can be useful for your own records, alongside the drop-off receipt, without replacing any required purchase proof.
Can you return an opened LEGO set?
LEGO directs opened-item returns to customer service. The item must include the original packing list or receipt, and the stated outcome is a LEGO gift card or an exchange for something of the same value rather than the ordinary original-payment refund.
Contact support before mailing an opened set so the team can tell you how to proceed. Describe whether the box was merely unsealed, the numbered bags were opened, or the set was built. Do not assume every level of use or missing contents will receive the same decision.
LEGO Brand Retail Stores explicitly exclude opened sets from the store-return option described on the U.S. online policy page. A trip to the mall therefore does not replace the customer-service process. Keep all pieces, instructions and paperwork together while the request is reviewed; the policy does not authorize discarding an opened set and requesting a refund afterward.
Can you take a LEGO.com purchase to a LEGO Brand Retail Store?
The policy permits unopened sets with a total return value under $200, supported by an original packing list or receipt dated within 90 days. The full refund is issued as a gift card, so this route does not promise money back to the original bank card.
Check the total value of everything you intend to return, not just the price of each individual set. For illustration, three $80 sets total $240; each set is below $200, but that does not make the combined return eligible for the stated under-$200 store option.
Confirm that the destination is a LEGO Brand Retail Store rather than an independently operated Certified Store. Bring the sealed sets and purchase evidence. The policy describes a limited alternative to mailing an online purchase, not a rule that every shop displaying LEGO products must accept LEGO.com orders.
What if your LEGO store return is worth $200 or more?
The store section says accepted returns must total under $200 and separately excludes totals over $200. That leaves exactly $200 unclear in the published wording. Contact LEGO before relying on an in-store return at that precise amount.
For a larger online return, use the official online process or obtain customer-service instructions. Do not assume the store must split a single return into several transactions to bring each below the limit. The policy bases the route on total return value and does not publish a workaround.
Think about the refund method as well as the threshold. Even an accepted under-$200 store return produces a gift card. If you need the value restored to the original tender, the normal eligible online return route may be more suitable. Decide before handing over the purchase, when you still have a choice about where to complete the transaction.
Which purchases cannot be returned at LEGO Brand Retail Stores?
The U.S. page excludes opened sets, unopened sets without purchase confirmation, clothing, apparel and footwear from its stated store-return route. It also excludes opened software, including video games and DVDs, and the named Pick a Brick and customized-minifigure orders.
These are route restrictions, so read them alongside the separate list of products LEGO does not accept back at all. A product that cannot go to a store is not automatically nonreturnable by every method; an opened set, for example, has a customer-service process with a different refund outcome.
Bring the product category and order details to support if you cannot identify the correct route. Do not take apparel to a store simply because the order value is below the $200 threshold. Meeting the price limit satisfies only one condition; the item type, seals and proof requirements still need to be met.
Can you return Pick a Brick or customized minifigure orders?
LEGO’s nonreturnable list includes Pick a Brick Bestseller, Pick a Brick Standard, Minifigure Factory customized orders and Create a Minifigure orders. These are excluded from the ordinary return process, including the Brand Retail Store route.
Check the order category rather than assuming all loose pieces are treated like a boxed retail set. Before placing a customized or selected-parts purchase, review the selections and quantities carefully. The standard 90-day headline does not create a change-of-mind refund for these products.
If the issue is a wrong, missing or damaged shipment, explain that specific order problem to customer service. A nonreturnable customization is different from receiving something other than what was ordered. The published exclusion does not itself tell you to send those products back, so ask for instructions and retain the order details while the issue is assessed.
Can you return a LEGO gift card or get cash for store credit?
LEGO lists gift cards as nonreturnable. Do not confuse that with the gift card it may issue after accepting an opened-item or eligible store return. One rule concerns returning a purchased card; the other describes the form of value you receive from a merchandise return.
If you are offered credit, make sure you understand whether it is a gift card or an exchange and whether that matches what you want to do next. The policy does not promise that you can later convert a return-issued card into a cash or payment-card refund by asking to return the card itself.
Keep the issued card details and completed return confirmation in a safe place. If an amount seems wrong, raise it with customer service using the underlying order and transaction record. Do not send the card number to an unrelated seller or use another retailer’s returns process to query LEGO-issued credit.
Must you return LEGO gifts with purchase?
Yes. LEGO says to include any gifts with purchase that came with the qualifying order. A promotional set supplied at no extra charge is still part of what the return instructions ask you to send back.
Check the original confirmation rather than relying only on the paid-item list. A small promotional bag or boxed set may have been placed separately from the main purchase after delivery. Locate it before packing so the parcel contains the qualifying item and the associated gift as required.
If you are returning only part of a promotion-linked order, ask LEGO which gifts need to accompany that particular return. The page does not supply one universal partial-return calculation or automatic deduction amount, so do not invent either. Keep the gift unused while the question is resolved if you might need to send it back with the main item.
How long does LEGO take to refund a return?
LEGO says it will refund an eligible order within 14 business days of receiving the return, using the original payment method for the standard refund route. Opened-item credit and the limited store-return option have their own gift-card or exchange terms.
The clock starts when the returned parcel reaches LEGO, not when you create a label or drop it off. Track the shipment and keep the delivery record if you need to follow up. A parcel still traveling through the carrier network has not reached the stage described by that refund estimate.
If the stated period has passed after confirmed delivery, provide support with the order number, return information and tracking. Ask whether the parcel has been matched and whether the refund has been issued. Keep the original-payment account in view rather than expecting a refund to a different card chosen after purchase.
Can a LEGO Certified Store handle a LEGO.com return?
No. LEGO says Certified Stores are not managed by the LEGO Group. Purchases made at one must be returned directly to that store, and those stores do not accept returns of sets bought from LEGO.com or a LEGO Store.
Check the receipt and store identity before choosing a return destination. A familiar logo or similar store display does not establish that the shop belongs to the same return system. The independently managed store’s own purchase terms are the relevant starting point for an ordinary return bought there.
The same practical distinction matters for a set bought from another retailer: use that seller’s purchase evidence and instructions instead of expecting LEGO’s online order system to find the sale. If your concern is a manufacturing problem or a missing piece, LEGO’s support options may still be useful, but that is different from reversing another retailer’s checkout transaction.
Should you return the whole LEGO set if a piece is missing or broken?
You may not need a whole-set return. LEGO’s official replacement-parts service has separate routes for a missing piece from a new set and a broken piece. Its support page also says replacement broken pieces can be requested free of charge.
Have the set number and the relevant piece information ready. Use the instructions to identify the part rather than guessing from a similar-looking element in another set. This can be a more focused way to solve an incomplete build when you otherwise want to keep the purchase.
A replacement-parts request is not a refund request and does not automatically extend a return deadline. If you want to return an opened set instead, tell customer service which outcome you want and follow the opened-item rules. Keep the set and paperwork together while deciding so one request does not obscure the information needed for the other.
What should you do if the LEGO return portal fails or the deadline has passed?
Contact LEGO customer service through its official support page if you cannot find an order, need an opened-item return or have another eligibility question. The returns page explicitly offers team assistance when the online process is difficult.
Have the order number, checkout email, delivery date, set numbers and condition ready. Describe the problem accurately: an unrecognized email, an opened set and an old purchase call for different answers. Keep the error message or confirmation so support can see which step failed without needing you to recreate the entire process from memory.
The policy does not publish a general return entitlement after 90 days. Ask before shipping an older purchase, and do not treat a generated label as proof that every item or late request has been approved. Wait for instructions while the merchandise remains in your possession so you can use the correct route if an exception is offered.
