Your Costco TV fails after the manufacturer’s first year, or your refrigerator stops cooling. Before paying for a repair, check your Costco coverage: eligible purchases get manufacturer-warranty coverage extended to up to two years total, included with membership. For a TV with a one-year warranty, that can mean a covered second year.
The key is matching your item and the problem to the right coverage. Costco’s standard extension covers select categories; an Allstate plan can offer a different term and protection. Here’s where to start.
Costco warranty at a glance
Eligible items: TVs, projectors, computers excluding touchscreen tablets, and listed major appliances: refrigerators above 10 cu. ft., freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers.
Outside this extension: Tablets, cameras, phones and small appliances. Check their manufacturer warranty or separate plan.
Cost and membership: Included for qualifying U.S. Costco member purchases. No Executive upgrade needed.
Longer coverage: An eligible TV with the qualifying Allstate plan can get five years total. Check whether your order includes the plan.

What does “Costco warranty” actually mean?
Shoppers use the phrase for several different arrangements:
- Manufacturer warranty: The product maker’s promise, with its own covered faults, duration and service process.
- Costco’s standard extension: Up to two years total for specified categories, subject to applicable manufacturer terms.
- Allstate Protection Plan: A separate plan included in some offers or purchased for an eligible item.
- Credit-card protection: An issuer benefit, with independent eligibility and deadlines.
Costco’s official warranty overview identifies its standard extension and Allstate as different options. Technical support is another benefit: an item can qualify for help without qualifying for the standard extension.
The ordinary return policy is also separate. Write down the applicable provider and coverage dates instead of treating every benefit as one combined guarantee.
Is the standard extension included, or do you need a paid plan?
Costco presents its standard extension as a benefit for qualifying member purchases. An Allstate plan is a separate arrangement and may be included in a particular offer or sold separately. Read the order lines to establish what you actually received.
You don’t need an Executive membership for the standard extension. Gold Star and Business members qualify too. Your product still needs to be in an eligible category, regardless of membership tier or how you paid.
Keep manufacturer registration requirements and any protection-plan registration instructions separate from Costco’s category eligibility. Ask about required steps for the exact purchase. Completing a registration form also does not convert an excluded fault, such as accidental damage under an ordinary defect warranty, into covered damage.
Which items get Costco’s standard two-year extension?
The published categories are TVs, projectors, computers excluding touchscreen tablets, and specified major appliances. The table below expands Costco’s category list into practical shopping examples. “Not listed” means the product is outside this standard extension; it can still have other coverage.

|---|---|---|
| Televisions | Yes | Eligible purchase and manufacturer terms apply |
| Projectors | Yes | Listed alongside televisions |
| Desktop, laptop and all-in-one computers | Yes | Confirm the specific device’s classification |

Does Costco double the manufacturer’s warranty?
It can turn a qualifying one-year warranty into two years total, but “double warranty” is not a universal formula. Costco’s standard wording is up to two years, not twice whatever duration the manufacturer provides.
A hypothetical one-year TV warranty can therefore have a qualifying second year through Costco. A manufacturer offering two years already does not automatically produce four years. A three-year manufacturer offer does not automatically become six.
Longer manufacturer coverage should be evaluated under its own documents. Check whether the advertised years cover the entire product, labor and parts, or only a component. For example, a hypothetical ten-year compressor warranty might have different labor limits and leave other refrigerator components under a shorter term.
Compare the actual scope as well as the headline number. Longer component coverage and a full-product extension are different protections.
When does Costco’s warranty clock start?
Costco’s standard extension FAQ uses the warehouse purchase date for warehouse transactions and the delivery date for online purchases. Keep the receipt and delivery confirmation so the appropriate start can be established.
For illustration, a qualifying online purchase ordered October 1 but delivered October 10 uses the delivery date under this rule. An item purchased and carried out of a warehouse October 1 uses the purchase date.
A return, repair appointment or replacement should not be assumed to restart coverage for another two years. Request the dates applicable to the actual remedy and documents.
Separate plans may have their own term wording. Record each coverage period as a dated entry with the responsible provider. A plan described as three years is not necessarily three years added after every other warranty ends.
What does Costco’s second year cover—and exclude?
Coverage follows the relevant manufacturer warranty terms. Costco’s FAQ lists common exclusions including physical damage, liquid damage, data backup and software replacement. It also identifies inappropriate use, such as residential equipment used commercially or commercial equipment used residentially.
An internal fault under normal use and a cracked screen after a drop are different claims. A qualifying product category establishes potential eligibility; the cause of failure establishes whether the specific problem fits the terms.
Costco reserves the choice of repair, replacement or a refund up to the purchase price for its second-year obligation. The benefit does not guarantee that a customer can choose an immediate refund.
For computer service, protect your files and ask about possible data loss. For any repair, confirm authorization and potential charges before independently hiring a technician or sending the product away.
How do Costco TV warranties reach five years?
A qualifying TV with the applicable Allstate plan can have five years total. Costco’s plan FAQ assigns the first two years to Costco or the manufacturer and years three through five to Allstate.
That example means two initial years plus three later years, not five added to two. The purchased or included plan must actually apply to your television.
Review the TV’s product listing and order lines. Some offers include a plan, while others require a separate purchase. A headline about five years on one TV is not a storewide promise for all models.
The TV plan describes mechanical and electrical failures during normal use. Check its exclusions instead of transferring the drops-and-spills coverage advertised for other product categories. Keep the TV invoice, plan confirmation and coverage dates together so the correct provider can be identified when a fault occurs.
What extra protection do laptops, tablets and cameras get?
Computers and tablets have different starting points. Qualifying computers are on Costco’s standard extension list. Touchscreen tablets are expressly excluded from that list, even though Costco lists them for free technical support.
The current Allstate FAQ describes three total years for its computer plan and two total years for its camera/tablet plan. Those plans also describe accidental-damage protection, subject to their terms. Do not convert three total computer years into two Costco years plus another three without checking the plan.
Costco’s camera/tablet plan listing requires a qualifying new Costco purchase and specifically excludes drones/aerial cameras. It also excludes intentional damage, loss and theft and is not intended for commercial use.
A touchscreen laptop and a touchscreen tablet should be assessed by product classification, not simply by whether you can touch the display. Ask about an ambiguous convertible before relying on coverage.
Which major appliances qualify, and which do not?
Costco’s standard list includes refrigerators above 10 cubic feet, freezers, ranges, cooktops, over-the-range microwaves, dishwashers, water heaters, washers and dryers. Each listed category remains subject to the applicable manufacturer terms.
The refrigerator threshold is particularly important: exactly 10 cubic feet does not meet wording that says above 10. The microwave type matters too. The broader electronics return policy mentions some microwave types that do not appear on the standard extension list.
For a built-in unit, unusual configuration or combination appliance, use the exact model and product description to ask about eligibility. Installation problems and product defects should also be explained separately.
A small kitchen appliance is not automatically included because it plugs into an outlet. Preserve its own manufacturer warranty and review any item-specific protection offer. An excluded standard extension does not mean Costco sold the item with no warranty at all.
How do Allstate appliance plans add coverage?
Costco sells category- and price-based plans for individual appliances and appliance suites. Confirm that the plan matches your item, paid price and purchase arrangement.
For example, its Allstate appliance plan above $2,000 is titled “Allstate 3 Years” but lists a five-year term in the specifications. Read the complete plan documents to confirm how its coverage coordinates with initial manufacturer/Costco coverage. The title and term should not be counted as separate benefits.
That listing describes mechanical/electrical failures, parts and labor, and service or replacement options. It excludes intentional damage, loss and theft and commercial use. An appliance-suite plan and a single-item plan are also different purchases.
The useful comparison is the entire covered period, covered causes, remedy and exclusions. Keep the original appliance purchase and protection-plan receipt together.
Can you buy an extended plan after the purchase?
Sometimes, within the specific plan’s purchase window. There is no single deadline that should be applied to all Costco protection plans.
Costco’s current appliance-plan FAQ says an appliance plan must be purchased within 90 days of warehouse purchase, or 90 days from receipt when the appliance was purchased online. Some individual listings summarize that deadline more generally, so confirm the rule for your transaction.
The camera/tablet plan linked above says it must be purchased within 30 days of purchasing the device. Check the actual plan listing for TV and computer deadlines rather than borrowing either of those windows.
A later plan purchase should not be treated as permission to cover an already-known problem. Review eligibility and exclusions before paying. Save registration instructions and follow them; a plan email may request steps beyond retaining the receipt.
Does the Costco Citi card add two more warranty years?
Do not automatically add extra years because you paid with the Costco Anywhere Visa. Citi’s currently published consumer protection-benefits guide does not list an extended-warranty benefit in its shopping-benefits contents.
It does list Damage & Theft Purchase Protection, which is a different benefit with separate time limits, exclusions and claim requirements. Citi’s current card page describes that protection; it should not be counted as extra years of product-breakdown coverage.
For an older purchase, ask Citi which benefits applied on the original purchase date. Historical articles and old warranty-stacking charts are not sufficient evidence of coverage on a new transaction. Other credit cards also have their own agreements, so establish an actual applicable benefit before adding it to your coverage timeline.
Is Costco’s warranty a lifetime return guarantee?
No universal lifetime appliance warranty is published in the standard program. Costco’s general satisfaction guarantee has important return exceptions. Its return policy gives listed electronics and major appliances 90 days from receipt for ordinary returns.
A covered breakdown later can be reviewed through the relevant warranty route. That is different from returning a working appliance whenever you change your mind.
For a TV failing after 16 months, contact Technical & Warranty Services about qualifying second-year coverage. For a TV in year four with an applicable five-year plan, identify the Allstate claim route. A product outside all applicable coverage does not gain a new lifetime promise merely because it was bought at Costco.
Tires, batteries and other categories can have product-specific warranties. Their arrangements should be checked separately from the electronics/appliance extension.
How do you make a Costco warranty claim?
Call 1-866-861-0450 for Costco Technical & Warranty Services, daily 5 a.m.–8 p.m. Pacific. Its official contact page asks for your name, membership number, Costco item number, item description/model, serial number and purchase date.
Prepare the online delivery date where relevant, symptoms, error messages and troubleshooting attempted. Ask which provider owns the claim, what documents are needed and what happens next. Keep the case number and any service authorization.
For an applicable Allstate plan claim, Costco links to the Allstate Costco portal. Check plan purchases in Costco.com Orders & Purchases, including the In-Warehouse tab.
Request instructions before mailing a computer, arranging your own repair or transporting a large appliance. Keep the actual fault and payment records clear; a support call does not by itself confirm coverage approval.
Four examples that make warranty coverage clearer
An eligible laptop has a hardware fault after 18 months. It may fit the standard second-year benefit, subject to manufacturer terms. Start with Costco and preserve computer data before service.
An iPad fails after 18 months. It does not receive Costco’s standard computer extension because it is a touchscreen tablet. Check its manufacturer coverage or a separately purchased qualifying plan.
A TV fails during year four. An applicable five-year TV plan can put the claim in the Allstate period. A TV without that plan should not be assumed to have five years merely because another Costco model advertised that offer.
An air fryer stops working. Small appliances are outside the named standard extension categories. Check the maker’s warranty and any item-specific offer, while considering the applicable return rules separately.
These are examples of choosing the correct route, not approvals of individual claims.
What should you save, and what should you ask before buying?
Keep the product listing, original receipt, delivery confirmation, manufacturer warranty, plan receipt and registration email together. Photograph the model and serial label while it is easy to access.
Before relying on advertised coverage, ask:
- Is my exact product in Costco’s standard extension category?
- Are the advertised years total or additional?
- Which provider covers each period?
- Does coverage include labor, all parts and the type of damage I am concerned about?
- Is a separate plan included, or must I purchase and register one?
- What deadline and exclusions apply to that plan?
For a gift, secondhand purchase, expired membership or purchase outside the U.S., request specific eligibility guidance. Costco’s standard service FAQ identifies U.S. members; it does not establish every transfer or international situation.
The practical starting point is simple: identify the item, count the total years, and confirm the covered cause. That provides a more dependable picture than adding every advertised warranty number together.
