Barnes & Noble Return Policy: Books, Gifts & NOOK

Barnes & Noble’s 30-day merchandise rules, 60-day gift credit, 14-day NOOK returns, mail postage and nonreturnable products explained.

By October 23, 2026

The short answer

Most eligible merchandise has 3 0 days: delivery for bn.com orders, purchase for store items. Gifts have separate 6 0-day credit rules; NOOK devices use 1 4 days. Original condition and purchase proof are required.

How to start a return

In a store

  1. Bring eligible merchandise, purchase proof and original payment method.
  2. Use any Barnes & Noble store for eligible online or store returns, subject to product rules.
  3. ShopPay and textbook counter returns receive store credit.

Online or by mail

  1. Follow packing-slip directions; print Shipping Confirmation if the slip is missing.
  2. Identify the order inside and outside the parcel, and pay tracked return postage.
  3. For a NOOK, obtain authorization and the correct address first.

01 / THE DETAILS

What is Barnes & Noble’s return policy for online and store purchases?

Most eligible online purchases can be returned within 30 days after delivery, while ordinary store purchases use 30 days from purchase. Purchase proof and original condition matter. NOOK devices, gifts, digital products and some other categories have separate rules.

For an online shipment, save the delivery record and order information together so the starting date is clear. For an in-store purchase, use the register receipt. The date you finish a book or give it as a gift does not create a new ordinary return window.

The policy warns that merchandise returned outside the applicable period will not receive a refund and may not be sent back. Start with the product category, then choose a permitted store or mail route while the relevant deadline is open. The general 30-day summary should not be applied to a NOOK device with a 14-day rule or a separately described gift-credit return.

02 / THE DETAILS

Can you return a book after reading it or opening sealed merchandise?

Store returns must be new and unread or unopened, and online returns must remain in original condition. Shrink-wrapped or sealed products need to stay unopened for an ordinary preference return. Buying a book is not a 30-day lending arrangement.

Check that the edition, format and condition suit your needs before putting the item into normal use. Keep sealed packaging intact while deciding about products such as media, games or other wrapped merchandise. Having the receipt does not override a condition exclusion.

Defective sealed merchandise has a narrower exception: it can be exchanged for the same product, rather than treated as an unrestricted refund after opening. Explain the fault to the store or customer-service team. A used item, a damaged delivery and a defective product are different situations, so describe what happened instead of relying only on the generic return headline.

03 / THE DETAILS

Can you take a bn.com order to a Barnes & Noble store?

Yes. Bring the item, the packing slip or order-confirmation or billing-summary email, and the original payment method to a Barnes & Noble store. A convenient store visit can avoid paying return postage on an otherwise eligible online order.

Two payment and product exceptions matter: a return of a ShopPay order receives a Barnes & Noble gift card or in-store credit, and textbook returns also receive store credit at the counter. Do not expect every online payment to reverse to the original account when choosing this route.

Check the product’s deadline and condition before traveling. The store option does not make digital content or opened nonreturnable products eligible. If you specifically need an original-payment refund and your transaction has a store-credit exception, ask customer service about the appropriate route before handing over the merchandise.

04 / THE DETAILS

Must a Barnes & Noble store purchase go back to the original location?

A store purchase must go back to a Barnes & Noble store, but not necessarily the same branch where it was purchased. The policy gives an example of a purchase made in New York being returned in New Jersey within the applicable period.

Bring the sales receipt and merchandise in new, unread or unopened condition. Ordinary qualifying returns within 30 days generally refund the original tender. When the original payment method is unavailable, the stated alternative is store credit in the form of an electronic gift card.

The warehouse mailing route is for online transactions, not a substitute for returning a store purchase. Check the receipt’s seller and purchase channel, particularly if several books were purchased from different shops. A Barnes & Noble-branded item sold elsewhere is not automatically a purchase the company’s own register can reverse.

05 / THE DETAILS

How do you mail a Barnes & Noble online return?

Follow the packing-slip instructions and send the eligible merchandise to Barnes & Noble Returns Department, 1 Barnes and Noble Way, Monroe Township, NJ 08831, identifying the order number. Check the current instructions before shipping because the address and purchase association need to be correct.

The packing slip includes a preprinted returns address, but it is not a prepaid postage label. You pay return shipping. Protect the merchandise in transit and retain tracking and proof of postage; an address label alone does not establish that a parcel was handed to the carrier.

For an incorrect shipment, write which item should have arrived on the packing slip or shipping-confirmation printout so the warehouse can identify the problem. A NOOK device requires its separate authorization or store route; do not send one to the ordinary returns address without checking those instructions first.

06 / THE DETAILS

What if your Barnes & Noble shipment has no packing slip?

Print the Shipping Confirmation email, place it inside the return parcel and write the order number on the outside. The policy offers this alternative because some shipments arrive without a paper packing slip.

This is different from sending an unidentified item. Barnes & Noble says it cannot process the return without a packing slip or shipping-confirmation printout. Check the order number carefully before sealing, especially if you purchased several books in similar orders.

An order email can also be useful for a store return, where the policy accepts the order-confirmation or billing-summary email as purchase evidence. Choose the proof appropriate to the route. For a mail return, do not assume that an exterior shipping label or a handwritten name alone contains the information the receiving team needs to match the purchase and issue the refund.

07 / THE DETAILS

Does Barnes & Noble allow returns without a receipt?

The store policy says returns or exchanges are not permitted without a receipt, outside the applicable period or for products Barnes & Noble does not carry. It does not publish an automatic lowest-price merchandise-credit fallback for an unidentified store purchase.

Search for usable purchase evidence before traveling. An online order has several documented alternatives for a store visit, including its packing slip, order-confirmation email or billing-summary email. Those online alternatives should not be confused with a promise that every store transaction can be recovered from a name alone.

For a gift, look for the gift receipt or ask the buyer to help identify the transaction. If proof cannot be located, contact customer service while you still have the merchandise. Do not mail it to the warehouse expecting the team to identify an unrelated store purchase and issue credit without the required paperwork.

08 / THE DETAILS

How long do you have to return a Barnes & Noble gift?

The policy separately describes gift-credit returns within 60 days of purchase. A gifted bn.com item produces a Barnes & Noble gift card, and an eligible store gift return with a gift receipt produces an electronic gift card for the purchase price.

That is a credit outcome, not a promise of cash to the recipient or a new 60-day window from the birthday or holiday when the gift is opened. Keep the gift receipt and identify the original purchase date. Product-specific restrictions still matter, so an opened excluded product does not become eligible simply because it was a gift.

If the gift is a NOOK device, check its 14-day device rule rather than assuming every gift qualifies for the general gift-credit treatment. Ask customer service which rule governs an unusual product before arranging shipping or relying on the longer period.

09 / THE DETAILS

What is the return window for a NOOK device bought from bn.com?

An undamaged NOOK purchased from bn.com can be returned within 14 days of receipt. You can take it to a Barnes & Noble store or contact customer service for a return authorization before shipping it.

Do not send the device to an address selected from the ordinary book-return instructions without obtaining the correct authorization and destination. The policy warns that a NOOK shipped without the required authorization to the wrong address will not be refunded or returned to you.

Keep the device, identifying paperwork and delivery information available while arranging the return. The short device window is separate from the ordinary 30-day merchandise period and the gift-credit wording. For a defective NOOK, the policy directs shoppers to a store or customer service for an exchange in accordance with the applicable warranty rather than promising an unlimited ordinary refund.

10 / THE DETAILS

Where do store-bought NOOKs or devices from other sellers have to go back?

A NOOK bought in a Barnes & Noble store must be returned to a Barnes & Noble store, although it need not be the original branch. The warehouse mailing option does not apply to that store purchase.

A NOOK purchased from another retailer or seller is returnable only to that seller under its policy. Check the seller on the receipt before using Barnes & Noble’s online order details or asking a local store to reverse the transaction.

If the issue is a defect rather than a change of mind, identify the product’s warranty and ask for the appropriate service route. A warranty exchange and an ordinary return can require different information. Keeping the receipt and product details together helps the team establish the purchase channel instead of treating every NOOK-branded device as a direct bn.com order.

11 / THE DETAILS

Can you return NOOK eBooks, audiobooks, gift cards or access codes?

The nonreturnable list includes digital content, such as eBooks, audiobooks and digital magazines or newspapers, as well as access codes and gift cards. Do not assume downloading or activating nothing creates an ordinary merchandise-return right.

If the problem is compatibility or quality, Barnes & Noble asks shoppers to contact customer service for assistance. That is a support path, not a guarantee that every digital purchase will receive a refund. Have the title, order and the specific technical issue ready so the request can be assessed accurately.

Memberships and subscriptions have additional eligibility rules, separate from book returns. The policy says subscriptions can be canceled and may receive a full or partial refund for an unused or unredeemed portion, while memberships refer to their own terms. Check the actual product type before applying the 30-day physical-merchandise rule.

12 / THE DETAILS

Are magazines, used books and bulk orders returnable?

Magazines, newspapers and used books are listed as nonreturnable and nonexchangeable. Bulk orders of 50 or more copies are also nonreturnable under the published policy.

Check these conditions before buying an event quantity or assuming a classroom or group order can be sent back like a single unread book. A bulk order has a specific exclusion even if the cartons remain unopened. The policy does not turn a large purchase into a risk-free reserve of copies for an event.

Sealed merchandise that has been opened has its own restriction, with a same-product exchange exception for defects. If an order is wrong or damaged, describe that actual fulfillment problem to customer service. Do not confuse a request to correct a shipment with an ordinary return of correctly supplied excluded merchandise.

13 / THE DETAILS

How do Barnes & Noble Buy X, Get Y Free returns work?

For a store purchase made under a Buy X, Get Y Free offer, items are exchange-only unless all merchandise from the offer is returned within the applicable 30-day period. Returning the whole qualifying group can allow a refund.

An exchange of an item supplied at no cost is limited to something of equal or lesser value than that item’s original cost under the policy. Keep the full promotional receipt so the associate can identify which products belong to the offer rather than assuming each line is an independent full-price purchase.

For illustration, returning only one book from a multi-book free-item offer should not be expected to produce the same refund as returning the entire promotional group. The example explains the distinction without inventing a particular deduction formula. Ask the store to calculate the actual exchange or refund before completing the transaction.

14 / THE DETAILS

How much will Barnes & Noble refund, and how long does it take?

An eligible ordinary online return refunds the item price and applicable tax to the original payment method, with shipping fees excluded. The policy says refunds are processed within 24 hours after being requested, but a card issuer may take several business days to show the credit.

That statement does not mean simply preparing a parcel produces an immediate refund before the merchandise is received and accepted. Keep the return receipt or warehouse confirmation so you can identify the refund actually requested and compare it with the original transaction.

Store returns may produce credit instead, including the named textbook and ShopPay online-order exceptions or when the original tender is unavailable. Mail return postage is also your responsibility. Consider both the expected refund form and the shipping cost when deciding whether a permitted store visit or a mailed return makes more sense.

15 / THE DETAILS

Who can help with a Barnes & Noble return or a rejected shipment?

Use the official Contact Us page for chat or email support. Its current page describes chat as available around the clock and offers phone support for specified account or order tasks. Use the contact choices shown there rather than an unverified number copied from another retailer.

Provide the order or receipt, product category, delivery date and any return tracking. If something different arrived, say which item was ordered and which was delivered. For a NOOK mailing request, ask for the required authorization and correct destination before sending the device.

Orders sent to correctional facilities have a separate caution: Barnes & Noble says it cannot accommodate refunds or replacements when rejection or nondelivery results from failure to meet the facility’s requirements. Check those requirements before ordering. That restriction should not be treated as an ordinary change-of-mind return with guaranteed postage reimbursement.
